Just heard from my student that he scored distinction for his PSLE Math. Ironically he did not complete "the 3 toughest questions" during PSLE.


This is a big suprise to his parents. However, I was not as surprised since this student has always been able to acheive the right speed at high concentration, which is the most important element for Math excellence.

Hope this serves as encouragement to all parents with children taking PSLE in 2010.

I was once contacted by a mother seeking help for her RGS GEP daughter. I tutored her daughter twice and she was OK for the whole Sec-1. She came back to see me again for 2 more sessions in Sec-2 and was OK again. I did not see her anymore but her mom told me recently that she completed her Sec-4 with full distinctions.


According to the mother, the father brought the who family to Japan when the girl was 5. When she returned at the age of 13, RGS gave her an entrance test and accepted her immediately for GEP program.

Her main difficulty was due to the fact that her school in Japan did not cover certain important concepts. Another important factor is the lack of exposure with Singapore education system. These 2 factors were important as she was very discouraged by the Math Teacher by the third month in RGS.

My 3 children are now above 16. When they were in Primary school, my wife and I made them take HCL. 2 of them did well in Chinese and so they scored well in PSLE. One of them did not do well and so his score was below 220.


I came to the conclusion that if a child did well in Chinese subject, he would do well in PSLE, assuming that he puts in equal effort on all his subjects.

Over the years I found my observation accurate most of the time. In March this year, I helped a mother find a good Chinese tutor for his son who is doing very well in all subjects except Chinese. By PSLE her son was talking about score of 250 and above, which is not possible prior to Pr 6. His confidence in Chinese boosted his overall confidence.

I would strongly encourage all parents to help their children to do well in Chinese.
