Asking him to have a structured time plan and set 30 minutes task slots will probably help for a start.

    • RE: P5 Science & Maths a big change

      nonKiasu:
Hi. My ds are finishing their P4 this year. Reading this thread is scary. Is it really a must to have tuition in both Math and Sci in P5?

A lot of parents were giving feedback about the jump from p4 to p5 in Mathematics and Science. Science doesn't differ much in terms of topics but the student is required to explain his/her answers to a certain extent and it can be practiced through various revision questions and not just regurgitate. Please also understand English plays a part here too when one is trying to express opinions.

As for Mathematics, the topics differ to a certain extent from the previous years but can be taught, understood and relate to each other once the student grasped the foundational concepts. And practice is the magic word here. However, I prefer to prepare my students to be exam smart and understand what the question wants before even attempting to answer the question.

      Hope it helps.

    • RE: Helpful Science assessment/guide books for P5/6

Science weekly is a good book to start off with. I suggest to use a book that has a lower and upper block version as well as notes in the beginning of all topics will be the most ideal.

It depends on how well the student can grasp the concepts as portrayed in the book. However, some books can be as comprehensive as the rest despite the thickness.

Lastly, choose a book that has the reprinted year the same as the current year. It will enable the student to revise more thoroughly with the revised edition (in my opinion!).

      Sruthi:
http://i59.tinypic.com/2eam8fs.jpg\"> -pleasr help with this question

Total age of Elvin's friends: 3x11 = 33 years old

Total age of Elvin and his friends: 33 + 7 = 40 years old

Average age of Elvin and his friends: 40 / 4 = 10 years old

Therefore, there were 4 children in group after Elvin joins in.

      Hope it helps.

Please help with model. Thank you

Seven years ago, Figo was 4 times as old as Gina. Their total age now is 54 years. How old is Figo now?
      Figo 4 units
      Gina 1 unit

      Total age 7 years ago = 54-7-7
      = 40

      Therefore, 5 units = 40 years old
      4 units = 40/5*4
      = 32 years

      Figo's age now = 32 + 7
      = 39 years old

      Hope it helps.

      Green-apple:
      Dear all,

How do u we train our kid without making error on their maths paper?
Relate the questions through various real life situations, I believe models help a lot in the case of problem sums as well as practices for the rest of the sections.

      Hope it helps.

      Blissedsher:
how about grammar? how do you all go about teaching grammar for P1 prep?

Understanding the difference in usage of grammar through assessment books (Usually the ones for 5-7 years old). If not, it can be taught as the year goes along.

      Hope it helps.

    • RE: All About Market Rates of Private Tutors

      karenmok:
I found this tutor for my kid in P6. She teaches in one of the international schools and was referred by a friend.

She offered me a free trial and DD is absolutely fallen for her. No other tutor will suit her now. When I asked the tutor to quote her rates, she says \"80/session for 40 sessions\". The sessions will be over the next 10 months. Any unused sessions will expire. In effect, she gets all money upfront, no agreements or contract, all risk is mine. If she backs out mid-year, I have no way to recover my money, unless she refunds it.

When I objected, she told me \"take it or leave it\".

I have worked with other tutors but noone has such weird conditions.

What do other kiasu parents say?
With such hefty conditions, I suggest a month's of trial lessons first. If not, it is really a 'take it or leave it' situation. This may not be the education that may ultimately suit your kid.
