The allocation of classes is out this morning.
Anyone know how was it done? Is there 1 or 2 best class/es for each level?

RE: Secondary School Third Languages
As far as I know from my son’s school, one quarter of them will drop 3rd lang by first term. By the end of the first year more than 1/3 will be gone.
After end of 2nd year, it will be consider quite good to have 1/3 left.
School life in the top few IP schoosl is very hetic. Lots of projects and CCA takes up a lot of time, esp, for sports.
If a student wants to take third lang, they really need to know how to prioritise his/her time. Very often, the 3rd lang is neglected as it is only once a week and is not compulsory to be counted in the GPA score.
Furthermore, 3rd lang is a language that the student normally don’t get to use it so often, without discipline, it is going to be an additional chore.
I am not trying to discourage those who wants to choose 3rd lang. By all means, give it a try. Who knows, you may be one of those really gifted in the language and find it very easy to cope with. If not, there is always an option to drop it. -

Does anyone know what to expect on 23 Dec when the kids report to school? Do they get the booklist n their books then? What about uniforms? Do we buy them now from Bibi n Baba?
A lot of forms to be collected, some need to hand in straight away, some can hand in on the first day of school. Make sure you don't miss any.
Then a talk for parents. After that the book and uniforms will be on sale.
Mind you, it is rather chaotic when come to this as there will be very long queues. I actually went to Bibi Baba, the outlet in Shaw Centre to get the uniforms beforehand.
If you are driving, go there a bit early, otherwise may not be able to find a parking lot.
When school starts in January, there will also be a series of talks for parents to attend, like choosing CCA that sorts of talk. -
RE: Comparing Science Enrichment Programs
My eldest son was with Science Buddies for their P6 Science lessons. He was there for the last few months before PSLE. That was 3 years ago. He told me the questions there were not exactly that challenging for him.
Now my second one is going to be P5 next year, gearing him to the PSLE mode. I am also looking around for some quality programme for him.
Just read the thread below about their ScienceQuest programme. They also incorporate Concept Map to their programme. They have put up a student concept map in the thread. I found it rather impressive. Perhaps worth exploring.

RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)
I think the portfolio actually do not play a role as important as most people think.
It is still the results that you get from p4 to p6.
As majority of the students who apply to RI through DSA would have a lot of similar certificates, like olympiad maths, NSW assessment and some school projects etc.
Unless it is something very extraordinary like you have conquered the Himalayas before, otherwise it is not going to have much impact on their decisions. -
RE: Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)
The first window period for RA Science was over. Anyone had any feedback for that?
Most students found that the Physics and Chemistry selection test were very difficult but Biology was manageable. -

Can finish by what time ? Thanks
The registration itself was not too long, some forms to fill in. There was also a talk. The longest part was the queuing up to buy the books and uniforms.Bumblebee135:

The MOE has confirmed registration for 2011 Sec 1 will be on 23 Dec 2010. Any parents can advise how long will it take ? Half day ? Whole day ?
Thanks
Actually, you just need to form and hand it in. The talk is not compulsory.
Uniforms and books can always be purchased another day. -

LOL but totally agree with this. The background and culture of SCGS and St Nic is so different.
after that turn blue.....verykiasu2010:

It is stranger for SCGS to merge with St Nic and CHS.....but this should make CHS boys over the moon and Nic gals see red, then green.....
(couldn't resist this ....lol)
This is certainly a strange arrangement. But to me is not so much of the culture or religion aspects since Singapore is a multiracial, multi-religious country. The thing that I am more concern is whether it will be a homogeneous group with similar standard.
Correct me if my info is wrong. The COP for affiliated students to get into CHS and St Nick is around 230-235 each year whereas SCGS is 200. There is a 30 to 35 points different. Unless they adjust the COP to be around the same, otherwise it could be quite difficult for them to achieve similar standard in year 5.
