RE: 2018 PSLE Discussions & Strategies (Born in 2006)
It is stressful In the sense that it is bell curved like psle. And they keep increasing the difficulty and changed the syllabus or exam questions like chemistry paper last year. From what I heard some jc were better prepared than others . No prize guessing which one

RE: 2018 PSLE Discussions & Strategies (Born in 2006)
I find it interesting that many people mentioned about hoping the kids will not be stressed up in the schools they go . At the end of the road they will all be taking A levels exam ( some IB) and it is a highly stressful exam ! More so than psle ! So opt for the school that can max out yr kids potential rather than thinking which school potentially can be stressful . If they have good friends going with them to the TOP schools all the more encourage them else they will spend the rest of their lives listen to the stories of the schools they wanted to go ( if they are still friends!)

RE: Games at NUS orientation camps sexualised
I wonder how many girls/ guys have been victimised over all these years. It is time to get to the root of the matter and change for the better.
I don’t think in any culture / sub culture of any society present or in the future , sexualised games especially with rape theme will ever be accepted.i sighed when I read comments saying adults are " backward ", the young perverts must know the socially acceptable behaviour before it is too late for them . -

floppy:
Wow you mean you have been using the Internet very much in the same ways as the kids ?cherryc:
Just curious , who are the kids who came out with the Itai chant / gor gor act? Have they been watching too much inappropriate stuff ? Seriously I will be worried if my kids came out with such ideas and not knowing where they get the influence. I have studied Japanese since Sec 1 and didn't even know Itai Itai yamete is used in which context until today ! Don't let these \"black sheep\" ( who in my opinion needs some Counselling ) ruin the spirit of orientation . I'm just puzzled why it seems \" acceptable\" to the kids while there is so much uproar when we adults know about it. Have kids been exposed to more things that we aren't aware of nowadays ......!?!
You haven't been using the Internet very much?
Understanding Japanese, you probably know the term Otaku and everything that goes with it.
I doubt the otaku will be out in the open Organising activities but if they do they need to relearn what is the social norm and acceptable behaviour.
The lack of supervision and control is unbelievable or probably the Organisers / authorities think this is acceptable too.... -

Errr we are not in Africa and we do not belong to any tribe …
I wonder what " enrichment of the rituals " one gets from such activities …
rains and Zappy have put very clearly in their posts what most people think . if it happens elsewhere like in office , disciplinary actions will be taken .
Starting of adulthood is indeed a dangerous time ! I hope you don’t forget we were youths once and been through all sorts of orientations in our lives whether in Uni here or overseas. My Aust orientation inc 1 day city tour … -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
X is only p1 now so you can Ask her to go for tuition for eng and Chin ( double tuition if necessary ) and she will get 4 point in 2021…
That’s why the change is set 6 years later, don’t say moe doesn’t warn you and give you enough time to strategise/prepare to attain the elusive 4 points…so don’t cry in 2021 if you don’t do anything now ! -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
With this new banding we still need to change the hardware and software in our school system . I hope they don’t just pat their back and think they have met the kpi. They just change the yardsticks of the psle grouping/sorting exercise but whether the students need to have excessive tuition to come to this stage or whether their potential will be matched after this sorting exercise has still not be addressed . so far there is a perception that many teething problem may arise and students may be unfairly sorted if not carried out properly . we don’t exactly know the main purpose of this banding criteria too.

RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
We have different types of MT and kids from different backgrounds taking it , wonder can this be used to sort one’s intelligence in this life changing game…don’t forget many get exempted from it too, especially in some schools . Don’t get me wrong , I thk MT is very important. Just that it may hide those truly brainy ones in math/sci , unless all Dsa.
Also lets say One is a 6 pointers , will he/ she safely knows which is 6 pointer school he/ she can choose ? If moe does not publish , one can only Guess then it becomes a Heng/ suay exam for most kids?
We still have not heard about the Dsa/affiliation criteria , will be another shocker I think . Guess psle exam may become an exam that benefits people who are " Heng" from birth . -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
That is provided the real talents with higher raw scores/ 4 pointers who didn’t get in their first 2choices don’t get lost in the higher-point schools and become demoralised and realised no point study hard since everything in life seems to depend on luck and get wasted/influenced badly for life…
Interesting to see how it will turn out. By the way any pri school in the world using such an ingenious method of balloting… -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
So we will have some lucky 4 pointers who can get into IP school straight through to the 2 most coveted JCs and some unlucky 4 pointers going to unknown secondary schools doing O levels or ALL 4 pointers guaranteed some IP straight through programmes sch ?
If MOE really wants to mix the top students let everyone has equal chance to go to the top JCs at the end of Sec 4. -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
I hope they will use this golden chance to standardise the affiliation bonus points across the different types of affiliated schools and for IP schools, I hope it is STRICTLY no bonus points.
Just some thoughts, in O levels or A levels one gets to choose the subjects to study based on one’s passion and strength and one can also choose the 6 best subjects to include in the aggregate point but for psle you can’t. Do you think someone who scores say 100 for science , maths and english but say 89 for Chinese deserves the chance to go to a 4-pointer schools more compared to someone with 91x4 subjects ?So aren’t we still chasing the last point??
In addition, will native speakers have more advantage in getting to the 4-pointer schools since their strength in Chinese maybe higher ? Are we missing any real talents in this way? Will the kids be demoralised and hence not maximising his/her potential in a higher-point schools ( no problem if every school is a good school)
Lastly, how does the balloting work ? Can a 4 pointer ballot and exhaust the 6 choices and no school for him/her if every school down the choices are full with people putting it as their first choice.
I still can’t figure where the meritocracy lies in this new PSLE banding. The perception is students will not chase the last point but now they will still aim for higher band for every subject so the stress seems more. Hopefully there is more clarification . Also I am wondering who thinks of this new banding score (and where is the scientific findings that this will have less stress…) and any consultative papers or simulation done to see if it will have undesirable outcome. My kids will not be affected (grandchildren maybe ) but i still hope to see meritocracy, less resentment , happy learning environment and all kids maximising their potential. -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
Probably we can list out the pros , cons and the concerns we have.
Pros:
1) no one will be defined by a 3 digits for the rest of their lives which may limit their potential
2) a chance for moe to change all the different affiliation points for diff secondary school
3) no need to chase the last point
4) spread out the top talents
Cons
1) may need subjective criteria which may be unfair
Concerns
1) underprivileged kids may lose out
2) parents may be more stressed to outsmart the system
3) they may not select the best students for the respective IP programs
By the way I see the edu minister making a few announcement tdy on Trpt . I Thk he is stretched too thin… -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
If you look at the first cabinet , there are brilliant people who didn’t want or not as suitable to be leaders like perhaps Goh Keng Swee who has contributed one of the most towards our nation building . If you read enough history , you will find many are at most mediocre or even not well behaved when they were young. Leaders in medical field do different things from the TOP surgeons by the way .

RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
Before the IP program started , there is a Wider spread of TOP scoring psle kids in different schools . Now people only want to go to the TOP few schools to Chope the jc places .
Primary school is the starting place for any child to learn and I don’t wish to see anyone 输在起跑线 (losing at the starting point). Moe should design an equitable system bearing that many things are subjected to manipulation by resourceful parents . Probably better to keep the system simple while boosting the school resources.
I’m just curious sometimes , many of our ministers and civil servants would have benifit from the meritocracy In the past. Have they forgotten now that they are in the upper class society ? Don’t they want to give poor kids who were like them before a chance ? In addition , they would have kids in the current system and they should understand the current system of over reliance on tuition .
Why do we need all " polished" products at 12 yr old and penalise the " raw products". You never know the late bloomers are the ones who may shine in the end who had spent most of the " daydreaming" or being naughty in primary school. Personally , I have seen many such successful cases . Those who shine or 品学兼优 at 12 yr old may also be mediocre in the end. -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
I feel sometimes the measures all too simplistic . Like they said " all school are good schools " thinking that will change our mindsets . Now they stop saying so I guess we are back to not all schools are good schools.
There is also an attempt to make some school niche schools so that more will be attracted to the specific activities of the school but this will not work cos people are still focuing more on academic results and 校风.
I also agree with what many had written about not using leadership as a criteria for admission on top of results . It’s like why u need 400 head prefects in top sch like RI! Then who will be the team members and think tank in society next time . All the leadership roles in primary school are not the real leadership we need in workforce , if it’s so we will have these ex head prefects helming DBS/OCBC etc.
Primary school (curriculum) is where you are nurtured and tried out various activities . It’s NOT a place where your parents use their resource to nurture you outside for you to be " measured" and " compared " with the rest on your maturity level, behaviour , academic competence, Cca skills, exotic skills for you to get admission to a prestigious secondary school. -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
I wonder how they will factor in bonus point for affiliated secondary school in the new scoring band system . Under the current point system, various primary schools have different cut off points with wide range affiliation points advantage . Under the new system , I wonder how it will be determined and will it be uniform across all schools ? Will it result in more people clamouring to go into primary school with affiliation or less ?
Most of the initiatives started well but along the way somehow the Objectives may not be met fully because of execution or people outsmarting the system . Say for IP, it started well with the intention of skipping o level to have more time for enriching courses but somehow it becomes a mean to Chope the places for the TOP jcs via psle. Then it results in all TOP students congregating in the few top schools unlike in the past and IP indirectly added to psle stress . Then we have Dsa and gep that have morphed into another means of choping places again. So let’s wait to see what surprises are in store to set the level playing field again and lessen everyone’s stress.
