There is no class ranking in NYGH. The msg is used as one of the criteria to promote to higher level as well as to enter certain talent programme in Sec 3.

Then I am incorrect. I had assumed all stations have underpass to each side of the road, unlike Botanic Gdn circle line. Maybe the canal in the middle of these roads makes it hard to have an underpass.

Maybe you want to consider taking north east line from sengkang mrt to little india mrt, transfer downtown line at little india mrt to tan kah kee mrt station and walk about one bus stop towards NJC

With Eton Kindergarten going to operate at Hwa Chong campus, I do not know how the traffic conditions along Bukit Timah Road will be. Though LTA has been encouraging people to leave their cars at home and to take the new DTL, it would be anyone's guess how the road conditions will be along Bukit Timah Road, with cars going towards Nanyang Pri Sch, MGS, Pei Hwa directions, possibly also Raffles Girls' Pri (moving back from Mt Sinai, now single session).

For us, it is still taking the bus to school that is more convenient as it is a shorter walking distance to the bus stop than the King Albert Park station.

Is the GEP really tough? We chatted with a parent whose son is in the programme and was told that many went to Learning Lab! Is there a need for tuition? My son doesn't have tuition other than Chinese (which we intend to drop) and he's independent in his work. I don't even revise or monitor his work. He doesn't like the idea of tuition. I don't want to register him for GEP and then end up stretching him with tuition classes. I'd rather he be happy...

Most GEP kids are happy from my observation. They're in a programme that was especially designed to cater to their needs. More independent learning and less of drilling. It's like a scaled down IP, brought forward by 3 years. Furthermore, the very best in their respective domains get to be sent overseas to represent the land. Why should they not be happy?

As I looked back to the last 2 years (ds qualified in 2013), the 3 impt factors for us were mgt of expectations, moving out of comfort zone, and managing our fear on the lack of PSLE preparation time.

Perhaps the trickiest part was on the management of expectations. For instance, one might be among the top few in P3. But come P4, one may find himself struggling to even meet the median scores due to the increased level of competition (competition being a neutral word here). That's logical, after all, every classmate also belongs to that 1-out-of-100 chosen group.

Secondly, how would one react if taken out of the comfort zone? To max one's potential, he will have to be stretched; he will have to be shifted out of his comfort zone. Does he like that? Tbh I don't think anyone does. I certainly don't. More importantly, does he feel that it's worth the sacrifice so that he'll come out a more well-rounded boy at the end of 3 years.

For some, they do not wish that their kids get stretched too early, concern about the stress factor or due to other personal reasons. Frankly, I suspect one's inherent abilities does not disappear that quickly. Decline GEP, there's still IP 3 years down the road. There is no right or wrong. It's more of a personal decision.

Thirdly, I see the amount of time my son spent on out-of-band activities, and I worry whether he would be adequately prepped for PSLE. The impact of a good PSLE result, though not terminal, can't be understated. Although there is a chasm between GEP and PSLE standards, the natural worrier in me will not rest until that PSLE result slip is safely in our hands.

For tuitions, it's personal. If you think your son would feel less happy with it, then don't do it. From what I know, GEB has held the position that no tuition is required to do well (aka hit baseline) if the child puts enough effort. The choice is yours, really.

Finally, unless one's child is extremely independent, due to the numerous project deadlines (my son usually have to submit draft 1, 2 before final submission for each project), and while the kids are still mastering time management, I feel that some level of monitoring would be beneficial.

Would like comments from experienced parents on the following:

1) Schedule of assessment did not include test. It was overlook and missed out. Some ws for the topics to be tested was not marked and returned for revision prior to test.

2) Topics to be tested not fully covered eg problem solving methods prior to test. Worksheets are not marked or returned to them promptly. But they have to do the worksheets everyday and do not get back until a few weeks.

3) For Science, no notes and worksheets corrections are not marked.

I have to go now to pick up my youngest but would like comments if you experience the same?

Hi, during my dd's time, I gather from other moms whose kids are in other schools that the gep prog is implemented 'differently'. The syllabus and the test/exam are the same but how is it carried out is different. I heard that a particular math teacher from CHS is very strict with marking and will give extra ws besides the normal gep ws. Some RGPS teachers are very 'on' and dedicated. Some NYPS teachers can be very 'lax'. So it really depends on the teachers and HOD.
The ws given, touched only on the basic stuff and usually are not 'dished' out in the common test and exam.
So after learning that, parents from my class brought this issue to the HOD, and finally past year common test papers are given out. But as parents, we have to monitor when these are given as some teachers like to give out very late (can be as late as 1 day before test date).
So if it does affect the kid's learning and confidence, it is better to talk to teachers concerned, other parents and HOD.
