Frankly, I’m quite surprised by the "un-kiasu" answers posted in this forum. This is Kiasu Parents forum, so what’s wrong with asking kiasu questions? I feel sorry for Manifits for receiving such "slap-in-your-face" answers. Pls, if YHO is really honest, will you be discouraging people from pursuing what they really want to know? U’ll be keeping quiet about it. Is it ok to see more of the kiasu spirit arising among Singaporean parents who seem to be quite complacent nowadays? Is it any wonder then that non-sg parents are the ones getting kiasu and asking the right questions and having kids who outperform ours? It’s an irony that Kiasu parents don’t sound kiasu anymore.

      Hi Shamum,

Thank you too for your supportive answer. I'm so glad to hear about your son's experience. I wish him all the best for his sec sch life. :imcool:

Precisely becos I know about DSA all these years that I asked about RI's niches. I also don't want to end up gasping that it's too late to train a child in his interest area (emphasize \"child's interest area\"). Like what you have heard correctly, some parents like me, would like to guide their children early in a sport, arts, etc early so that they will not be disadvantaged (true to the spirit of kiasuism). Of course my kids have to love the sport etc. O/w it'll be a chore for both them and me if they're not interested. Of course I know this fact.... I not stupid too. :boogie:
RI's website doesn't inform the public about their niches leh. Perhaps it's so as not to offend other CCAs bah..... 😓

If I wanted to know about other schools, I won't post on this tread. Like I mentioned earlier, I didn't say die die my kids MUST go to RI. My qn is: What are RI's niche CCAs? :?:

      Hi Darlingbabe,

I am not sure how you come out with this idea. If you want to know more on dsa for CCA/ club. You can check from respective school website. You will need to consider whether your kids like & able to do... and also.... will it be the same system when your kids reach P6?.....

when my son at the end of P5, I have been told by some parents that kids need to start train before P1 to get top 3 position when kid reach P6 to go for dsa, etc .... I am like ah :yikes: already too late 🤷 .. but I tell myself that I am lucky to hear it late 😉 ... if it early, I may find something to do ... my son is my first child & clueless ... I dont really know what was dsa untill my son at end of P5 :nailbite: ... all along ... I let my son do what he likes and he had been changing from one sport to another for some reason... mid of P5, he found the sport that he love and he enjoy playing it. I think it make the different. He chose training over computer game, which gave me suprised. Come dsa in P6, he got confirm offer from 3 school that he applied.

What I tried to say is that please guide them along the way and help your kids find the thing that they love to do and it will turn out fine. 🙂 This is just my two cents worth of advise and hope useful.

      Hi Octoberbaby,

I want to thank you for your wonderful response. :rahrah:
You're the only parent in this tread who talks sense. The others just wanted to shoot me down and didn't address my main question of CCA..

I didn't say die die my kids must go to RI becos there are so many other good schools in spore. Of course I know all the rhetorics about respecting my children's choices etc. I'm just simply asking what RI specialises in.
So I thank you for answering my question and am deeply grateful about the info on focusing on Math. 😄

How do you work hard on helping your boy excel in Math?
      Need advice.

      Thanks!
      :please:

      Hi,

I'm a super kiasu parent: I have three young boys who are not even in pri sch but I have set my sights on RI for them.

I would like to know: What are the niche CCAs in RI? I would like my boys to take up the sport/club that RI emphasizes on so that they will have a higher chance of admission thru DSA.

      Super kiasu, rite?
      😉

Not only you lah. I also super kiasu and wanted my boy to enter in 2015 admission. But one forumer asked me why must be RI? There are other schs. I am working hard on mathematics. Now taking all sort of math competition.

Hi, atutor2001. I'm qt serious abt advancing my child cos he is able to focus and has gd attention span. Here i am talking abt the fact that I suspect my child is above average (given feedback fr his various teachers in sch), how can I advance him? I'm scared (aka kiasu) that if I miss advancing him before he goes into formal schooling (aka MOE rote learning curriculum), and since he has the interest in academic stuff, I wont be able to turn back the time. My son is 5yo now. The window period is closing on him and I just want to maximise his potential by input-ting in him as much as I can. But I'm qt unresourceful in this aspect. If I can get hold of the materials, i can teach him better at home. Any parent facing the same dilemma? Of cos I wont emphasise less on values and character-building. R brain training enrichment classes or math classes effective on a 5yo? If so, which one would u recommend? TIA.

My kids are above average. I was super KS with my eldest because of lack of experience then. Thought math, science...... at very early age. The end product is a very meticulous, hardworking person - good results. But big problem - cannot socialise well. Luckily I didn't do the same to the other 2. They become social animal, results still above average and have many friends. Enjoy better life - dare to venture.

To produce that kind of results from a non-genius but just above average kid will change their behavour - something that is permanent. Heard of friends who used flash-cards, producing kids that are very impatient. So I think if the kid is above average by nature, they will still shine with normal guidance without excesses. Just sharing what I have gone through.

Well, that's why we need to balance character-building thru sports and other means of socialization. But what I'm focused on now is math training. If my child shows special interest in it, i shouldn't deprive him a chance to excel in it at an early age.
I asked for help here at this forum cos I'm ks enuff to care abt his devtm. After all this is a ks parents' forum. :lovesite:

The sms aside, I really wonder what materials or methods they used to teach their preschoolers. They must have started from the fundamentals rite?

I'm more interested in how they started off their preschoolers at an accelerated way so that they are not just teaching 1x1=1.

      Simple proven methods :

      1. Use timetable to create nursery songs and start singing them at 2. They will know their timetable by 5.

Yes, my son knows couple of multiplication songs. But to apply it to a math equation, how to u teach it to him? directly or with visual aids? How to get hold of these visual aids/materials?

      2. Teach algebra by 6. They will solve O level questions by 8.

R u kidding or deadpan serious?

Qualification : Kid must be above average. Kid must be disciplined.

      Don't do it!!!
