RE: Where to get white sch shoes other than bata?
I used to get bata from the periodic time sale on Qoo10. Sale price is normally $9.90. Nowadays, I get from ezbuy or Taobao. Not unusual to find 100% white sport shoes for <$10 after inclusion of agent fee and delivery charge.

RE: Travel: Taiwan - Taipei
Song22:
I love Cosmo. Great location and service. BUT.... it will be filled up rather early. So if you are keen, please book early. An alternative for me to Cosmo is Caesar which is diagonally opposite. Caesar is a star higher.. thus more ex. However, it is less popular and thus u can often promotions on various websites. An advantage of Caesar is that it is link to a mall which in turn line to the MRT directly. For Cosmo, u need to exit and walk a few stops before its main entrance. Service wise, Cosmo is much better.Btw, I am looking at these hotels (family rooms):
1) San Want Hotel at 忠孝东路,very near to MRT, Sogo, etc
2) Amber Hotel at Ximending, not very near to MRT
3) Cosmo Hotel, Taipei Bus station
Any comments? Which is a better choice?
I love these 2 cos the location. Link to HSR, Train, MRT and Bus depot. Its underground mall is huge and even link to another station. -
RE: All About Wushu
extraterrestrial:
My kids are 2.5yrs into Wushu. Have taken 2 tests. Only 1 test promote them from white to blue belt. The other for san duan dao dun award them any new belt. Currently they are doing si duan gun. Understand that there will be a test a year-end to promote them from blue to green if they can pass it.micollh:
is there grading for wushu? anyone can share ?
Yes, there is. In fact, my son has taken his grading exams twice. And will be taking his 3rd one this Sunday.
White belt is the basic, followed by yellow then orange, and so on until they obtain the black belt. After the black belt, they can consider taking up instructor belt. Once they have the instructor belt, they can start to teach wushu.
The problem with Wushu is that there seemed to be no common standard in Singapore. What they learn at the CC is quite different from their classmates in school. They are currently doing Taekwando as well. TKD is rather standardised... grading is per quarter and the strokes tested seemed to be more uniformed throughout locally. -
RE: BOOK Fairs
FantasyLandDreams:
No queue for me. That was around 6pm.Popular warehouse sale:
Horrid long queue now. Very hot. Saw the popular boss here too. Two assessment book I want out of stock. Don't really have much story books for 8 to 12 years old.
Liquid paper refills 2 boxes for $15.90. Thick arch files ( 6 for $12.90) and lecture pads cheaper I think.
Not worth the effort to come today, weekdays perhaps less people.
Edit to add:
Took an hour to reach cashier. Worse than expo sale, super hot.
Assessment books are really cheap... esp. those section 2 on 80% discount. 1 for 1 books are really value for money. Main complain is the heat.. cos it was not air conditioned. For the sake of $$, I think it was worth the effort. -
RE: All About Supplements for Children
Sieg:
Did you try the one from Nature's Way on iHerb? Looks much affordable.
My ds used to have nose allergy (sneezy and runny) every morning when he got out of bed. He recovered fully after taking one tablet of Masquelier's french pine bark every morning for several months. He's still taking them now to boost his immune system. Check it out at GNC outlet. It may be very expensive but with membership card discount, it is still affordable and worth the price. Most of my friends' dcs took them and swore that it worked well initially but subsequently the symptoms would return. The trick is just continue to take it anyway. After a few months, it will work like magic.janet88:
it's nordic mango boost. contains EPA and DHA. tried the new lemon flavor but don't quite like it.
if your son is on fish oil, can cut that off.
mine here had to take zyrtec every morning but it is medicine after all and i don't want him to have to take it for good.

Your friend never consider the trouble of re-adjustment and re-adaptable for kid and parents? Rescheduling of activities.. For the case of those with younger siblings in the same school, now gotta settle the troublesome logistics for 2 schools...
I once asked my friend why did she enrol her very bright child in a neighborhood school (where half the class was made up of foreigners). Her reply was, if dc is good, dc will go to GEP centre in 3 years' time. True enough, her dc was selected for GEP. -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
jetsetter:
Ok I see, thanks darwinkoh! But HSK had already said it won't be A, B, C, D last year. Instead it'll be converted to points for admin / posting purpose.
You could adopt a broad grading system like A, B, C, D, E for enrolment into universities as specialisation has kicked in at the tertiary level, and course differentiation is bigger, so it's more palatable to applicants. But for Sec 1 posting, you need a finer system to differentiate 39k PSLE candidates and distribute them across 153 schools (164 - 11 sec schools after recent merger) offering roughly the same 8-10 subjects. A, B, C, D cannot do that effectively and fairly like you've observed. It's too arbitrary.
Instead of getting a score out of 300 points, pupils will get grade bands - similar to how students get graded from A1 to F9 for the O levels or A to E for the A levels. The grades will then be converted to points to be used for admission into secondary schools.
http://www.gov.sg/news/content/the-straits-times-parents-pupils-will-get-time-to-adjust-to-psle-changes
Even for banding i.e. A1 to F9... it is still a series of steps... though the steps are indeed smaller than A to F as in A-level.
So is a series of small steps better than a gentle slope? For most of the time, a few points dun make a difference. However, if it does, the difference it makes is bigger. E.g. the great difference might come in when previously one has the option to choose express but now he have no choice but to take up normal just because he slipped into a lower band. -
RE: Any Updates As To When PSLE T-Scores Will Be Scrapped?
jetsetter:
I mean if they just look at grades.. i.e. number of A*, A, B.. etc.
darwinkoh: Not sure if they will rank like that ultimately. Pardon my dumb question, but I don't quite understand what you meant. You using raw scores? 386 scorer (the specialist in 3 subjects) will end up being ranked lower than 360 scorer (the generalist)?
I believe they won't base on the actual raw score. They should still rank one's score within the cohort, so the specialist isn't shortchanged. It must be set against a bell curve like the current system, but convert the T-score to an O-level type of point, as PM had openly suggested 3 years ago.
Of course, from the article, we have educators who don't favour ranking one's performance in relation to others' performance...
If 90 happen to be the point that determine if someone should be assigned A* rather than A... he who scores 99, 99, 99 and 89 will get 3A*+1A while another who score 90, 90, 90 and 90 will get 4A*. 4A* is ranked higher than 3A*+1A but if you take the summation of points, the former will fare better.
If RI's cut off grade is 4A*, the student who get 99, 99, 99 and 89 will miss it. As I mentioned earlier, the new system which based on grades rather than score is merely turning what happen to be a gentle slope to a series of steps. I personally feel it is less fair.
