    • RE: Free Car Park at School

There is a well-written Straits Time Forum article by a Kelvin Tan:

      Another article on the subject:
      http://www.straitstimes.com/forum/lette ... ng-message

There are a lot of teachers who are working extra long hours, going to school earlier than most office workers and returning to their family long after others have dinner and already resting. They probably still continue to do work after dinner - marking homework and preparing for next day lessons. Try to calculate the number of hours they work. How will they have strength/energy level to do this long term if they have to spend long hours to commute to school and home, plus the long hours they spend to stay back and help weaker students or conduct remedial classes? For some of them, having a car is a necessity to cut down on traveling time. Therefore, is it the right thing to charge them parking fee in school compound? Can't free parking be regarded as a token of appreciation instead of perks? Must they pay a price for being caring and responsible teachers who do their best for their students at the expense of their personal time with their family? If you have school going children, wouldn't you wish the teachers spend extra effort and time to help your kids?

Teachers should be allowed to free parking within school compound. Charging them will discourage them to stay back to help weaker students. They should not be incurring additional expense for going beyond their call of duty. There will always be people who take advantage of free parking in the school. As for those in ITE AMK, there is always a way to charge the public who take advantage of the parking lots there, eg. designate an area for chargeable public parking and a different area for free parking for lecturers.

    • RE: Mother slaps boy who knocked into her son at school

Using my son’s primary school as an example, to have access into the school compound, one must first go past the security guard and the general office at the entrance. If parents claim to have appt with teacher, they must report to security guard first, then go to general office next to it. The admin staff will call the teacher to meet the parent in the general office area. Still no way for parents to go beyond the entrance and into the compound. Perhaps not all school has the same layout but there must be some way to control unwanted access. True that this may be a one off incident of an irresponsible parent and we can’t treat all parents like they are potential ‘slapper’, but as a parent I would feel more at ease knowing that my kid is in safe environment if the school has tight security procedure in place. My heart goes out to the innocent boy who was slapped wrongly. It must be a shock to him and scar him for a long time to come.

    • RE: Mother slaps boy who knocked into her son at school

The primary school should be very strict about letting visitors/parents into the school compound. Rightly so to protect the safety of young primary school students. I also wonder why this unruly mother is allowed to get inside the school.

      Here’s my thought:
      1. Shouldn’t parents stop at the school gate when they send their children to school?
      2. After slapping the wrong boy, why no one stop her from going around the school looking for the other boy to slap? Is the school too lax with security?

My opinion is that to avoid similar incident, the school should impose strict rule and stop parents going into the school compound without valid reason.
In my son’s primary school, only parent volunteers on duty are allowed to go into the school compound and only on the day that he/she has duty. They are told not to discipline the students, that is the job of the teachers.

Yes, rental income from renting out your condo should be declared with your annual income from work or business.

Yes, trust has to be earned over time (years) in EMA case. If the other party realised his/her folly and wiling to give marriage a second chance, it is important to build trust.

I only gave essence of chicken on the exam day. Drinking it every day seems to be overdoing it and burns a hole in the pocket

    • RE: ATM card for kids

It never cross my mind to give my Sec 3 son an ATM card. He never ask for it too.

I gave him $50 pocket money a week, of which he donate $10 on Sunday mass. That left him $40 to spend for recess and lunch for the week. My husband and I will give him additional money if he tells us that he has only a few dollars left before the week is out. We will ask why even though we don’t really care for the reason. In a way it is to let him know we don’t anyhow dispense money. I use to keep all his Ang Pow money, but not anymore, now that I know he is careful with money.
