All the three schools are really good and on surface, it looks a tough choice indeed. However, if you will to analyse deeply, the decision making becomes less complicated.

Next, understand your ds’ strengths and weaknesses, his aspirations follow by a detailed understanding of individual school’s academic prog, culture, ccas, guess distance is not an issue for you from the way you selected the schools. Following is my imput:

NUSH- Graduation Cert NUS diploma: Highly recommended if your ds is a natural science student hoping to be at the frontier of science research and discovery when he grows up. Paremeters include: maths score above 97 without tuition and science score above 92 without tuition.

ACSI- Graduation Cert: IB Diploma: The diploma is highly recognised overseas apart from local unis. This programme is best suited for students who are good in general academics with particular interest and strengths in the study of humanities. I must stress that it doesn’t mean their sciences are ordinary. For example in the study of HL Maths which is equivalent to H2 Maths, it covers a tropic which is only studied at H3 level. Unlike the A-levels which diffentiate btw H2 and H1 marks, here in IB, there’s no diffence btw HL and SL. Invariably, a student is expected to be an all rounder.

RVH- Frankly, this school amazes me by virtue of their ability to produce very good sets of A-levels results in a relatively short period of time. This school is highly recommended if your ds is unable to decide whether the other two programmes suit him or he is still unsure whether he is stronger in science or humanities.

In any of these three, encourage him to excel in his cca and strive for leadership positions.

I think you are now in an exceedingly contnded situation!

You will never get to hear the fate of the bottom 10% whether in RI or HCI for obvious reasons. In fact the bottom 20% generally failed to qualify for local business schools so hve to choose unpopular courses.


For the bottom few percent, no choice hve to take distance learning degrees or retake A-levels as a pte candiate.

Those bottom ones might have been transferred to other sec school from RI before they even reach sec 4. If in HCI, those bottom ones, some stay on after they buck up while some might have gone to other JC/poly after taking their 'O' Level.

After accounting for reasons outlined by you, the bottom 20% still are unable to score at least 80 rank points. Do not underestimate the competition from the top 2nd tier jcs as well apart from the top 7(incl DHS and RVH).

The bottom 20 percentile is below the 50 percentile of the top two 2nd tier jcs namely ACJC and AJC.

In addition to academic performance whereby RI’s mean of 85.5 vs HCI’s mean of 84.5, culture and distance, one needs to feel comfortable studying in the chosen school.


Another important factor is which school can provide your dd the best opportunities to excel in her cca or the likely hood of representing her college in national competitions. Just base on straight As without a good cca portfolio is considered only as good in one aspect. If a student aims to study for free in our local unis, a good cca record is a mandatory requirement. As both are the top girls’ schools, the positive feedback from some existing girls while informative cannot be totally instructive as is based on one’s personal experience only. No two persons are the same!.

For those who are highly capable and posses leadership qualities, evaluate which school is the most ideal platform to position you to sieze top student’s leadership positions ie president/vice president of student council or at least president/vice president of respective ccas. You will definitely be asked this question during scholarship interviews or selection interviews for admission to medicine and law faculties.

Remember you are not just competing within your own schools but the entire cohort.

Which banks have the best rates or good products now???

In this low interest rate enviroment, any product introduces by banks that carries a promised coupon rate of 2% or more if any will either hve conditions or need the consumers to carry some form of risks.

If you hve been regularly visiting popular book store, why not consider buying some shares for dividends gain? At current trading price of 23-23.5 cts, the dividend yield is 5%. Of course is not a fix rate coupon and its very much depends on yr-yr performance. At its worst yr 2009, the dividend yield was still 3% at current price. They hve a cash hoard of more than $100M, which gives an investor some comfort(approx 14cts). Invariably, u are valuaing its entire business at approx $80M or 9cts/share.

Another one which is more adventurous is Tai Sin Electric, a cable mgfr. At current trading price of 24-24.5 cts, its dividend yield exceeds 8%. Throughout its last 5-yr period, the co has never failed to declare a dividend yield that was less than 6%.

Both cos carry tradinbg risks ie fluctuation of its share prices. Moeover, its businessses are not exactly exciting to entice instituition investors to park their money. So u need to be patient and just sit still unless something major crops up.

My intention here is not to get you to buy these shares or worst engage in trading. The main objective is to share with you the possibilities of putting your money whether cash or CPF to work harder for you.

We are at the early stage of information age and the effects of globalisation has just begun. One of these effects is the free movement of human capital whereby talents go to places with opportunities.


Its our responsibilities as parents to bring up our kids and educate them on the threats and opportunities glonbalisation can bring. Gone are the days whereby an employee just needed to show commitment and loyalty to a firm and be compensated fairly. With the opening of more uni places, the advantage of attending gep and the likes of RI/HCI schools are being neutralised. Mindsets hve to be changed whether one likes it or not. In place is who can successfully identify opportunities and get trained or uses his knowledge to capitalised on it. One cannot simply rely on his tertiary education to make a good living.

We owe it to ourselves to earn a living. The government of the day can only provide the conductive enviroment for businesses to thrive and players must take advantage of the positive enviroment. The big advantage we hve in Singapore is a govt that is business friendly. They truly understand the full meaning of being internationally competitive!

In this instance, employees must understand that they are needed to fufill a given task and in return they are compensated accordingly on what was agreed. One cannot argue that he/she is not well paid as nobody forces you to take up the job. Employers also cannot say that they are doing you a favour by providing u with a job or opportunities. All in all, its a commercial exchange and an employee is free to seek greener pasture whenever there’s better pasture even as his employer may hve spend much resources to groom him/her. On the other hand, an employee notwithstanding his hardworks and commitment can claim injustice even if being replaced by fts, restructuring or coporate manouvering. The cos hve every right to take the necessary actions for its long-term survival. The earlier one accepts this harsh realities the better for him and his loved ones.

So now the question is how to thrive in this information era? I don’t claim to hve the perfect answer. However, as i mentioned earlier, its best for at least one of the couple to train themselves to be ready for any awkward coporate restructuring. You will surely be at a better state of mind and far less stressful to take on new challenges.

What you hear is correct. However, herein lies the big difference. Generally, there’s a big gap btw these two groups.

Its definately much easier to score a distinction at H1 level than H2.

4H2 is advisable if yr dd is strong in every single subject apart from scholarship applications later. Another advantage is the weakest of the 4H2 subject will be regarded as H1 for rank pt calculation.

As long as a student shows a slight weakness in one subject, its advisable to offer it at H1 level as he/she need not cover that broad though the depth remains unchanged. Mid-tier scholarship bodies and unis’ scholarship and most popular courses welcome students who offer 3


Our unis do not favour 4H2 over 3H2.

Generally, 75-80% of the jc classes comprise of science stream with the remaining from arts.


Maths is considered as a science domain. Summary of domain classification:

H2 maths + at least 1H2 science is considered as science stream even as the H1 is a contrasting art subject.

H2 maths + 2 H2 arts is considered as arts stream even as the H1 is a contrasting science subject.

Each yr, there are many science students that opt to read accountancy, business, economics and social sciences. That probably explains why the principal favours students to take 2 humanities from yr 3.
