I think you are mistaken. The therapists in MSL have all recieved in depth advance training and are acredited by the academy of orton-gillingham in new york. If you have just attended their basic training, you cannot call yourself a therapist. BTW, the basic training is open to the public twice a year. When you call up to enquire, they will explain to you the difference. There is a huge difference between therapy and tutoring. Parents need to check the credentials of the person you are engaging. Basic training is to start you off, a therapist needs a lot of training before they are good enough. However, if cost is a consideration, then attending the basic course for parents is a good way to start helping your child. You can read more on the academy's website at http://www.ortonacademy.org

You mentioned that you are trained by the same organisation.. i believe the organisation is MSL itself. They do a lot of internal staff training which is more advance than the basic course I believe you attended. A lot of parents who send their children to the centre also attends the basic training so that they can help hasten the therapy. Most of the kids from the centre actually do very well in school.

\".....educational therapist charge three figure per hour. Whee me are doing it at affordable two figure rates even middle class parents can afford. Higher end places like MSL and me were trained in the same organisation and have the same amount of experience. The only diffrence is one is a money making entity and me I do it purely for passion and monetary rewards are secondary. BUt when I keep fees affordable parents have this suspicion whether you are good. They rather pay three figure and go there as they believe that more expensive is better.[/quote]

This course is conducted by a fellow of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham, meant for teachers, but a lot of parents take it to teach their own dyslexic children. All materials given. You can find more info at http://www.msl-orton.com or call them at 67334188.

In primary one, he was reading books like Harry Potter etc but his spelling was quite bad. So that's how I knew. Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence, just need to be taught.

BTW, tamarind, if you D is gifted in designing, no need the paper!!! she'll be famous 😄

agree!! So I always tell my son he has to work hard if he wants to study in USA. Can't afford to send him there, so he's gotta make his way there on a scholarship. Or else it will be the local U. Choice is his

Can't force things once they are in their teens..motivation has to come from within.

Hi every body… just to follow up…some GEP schools do not prepare the kids for PSLE (my son’s ex-school) and generally, the kids don’t do as well as a lot of mainstream kids. But the survival skills are there. So they’ll be able to clear PSLE with not too impressive results (when I look at my son’s and his friends’ results). Why equate giftedness with results?

Not a neightbourhood school, but one of the aided ones... not GEP. That he only got a transfer in P4.

Will I tell teachers if my child is exceptional...hmm no! I think teachers may start to pick on him or may think I'm a parent who thinks too highly of my child etc. Teachers are not the most understanding lot (too much work) .. I was a teacher before, once upon a time! And I know some who would pick on kids. (especially when they feel parents are interfering). so I don't take chances unless I know the teacher well. 😄

cctc, violence is not part of the dyslexic problem, although some of them may feel really frustrated by what is expected of them. MAy i suggest that you get a full psychological assessment done by a qualified educational psychologist who will investigate all issues and not just dyslexia. You can then make a more informed choice for your nephew.

The only way to help dyslexics who are severe is through direct intervention. They do not outggrow the condition. And if the condition is severe, it will be hard for them overcome on their own…nor does tuition help. Parents, you need to arm yourself with information… my son is dyslexic and in GEP. So there is hope…get yourself trained in teaching them, it would be more effective than sending them once a week to someone. Good luck!

      Hi EN,

My son was also scolded, and teacher pulled his collar and dragged him to me after school - for reading during chinese class after he completed his work; that was when he was in P1. But, well, he’s got to learn some socially appropriate skills… not to offend teachers…haha! They all have to learn survival skills, gifted or not.

Check out the International Dyslexia Association Website. It has a lot of factsheets that you can download. You can make a more informed decision from there
