Hi 25 hr mama, I've not received any calls from Rgs.

Do you want to call Rgs to clear your doubts instead?
Hi all, just like to check whether anyone of u received call from the school regarding update of parents mobile numbers? I just did, but feeling a bit puzzled & apprehensive why the school need to do this, it's just the beginning of the school year, and all these information had just been given to them when filling up all the required forms recently. Actually I'm worried could this be a fraud or something.... Am I over paranoid?!

No call from school. Is it only for yr 1s?

The school does SMSs to parents sometimes. Usually, its about some important messages or when your dd is absent.

Thanks soda for the response. Yes, my dd is in year 1, & that's exactly why I'm puzzled over this need for update as the numbers were given to the school just recently. If the update is for Yr 2 to Yr 4 pupils, that I can understand, as this has been a common practice in dd's Primary school too, requesting for update from P2 to P6 pupils, usually at the beginning of each year.

When I received the call, my heart pumped so fast when the caller told me it's from RGS, as it is Yr 1 Camp Day in school, I was worried whether could it be that my dd is unwell or has had a fall or something. When I was told its abt update of mobile numbers, was a bit apprehensive. Actually thought of asking the caller whether she has our numbers on hand since all these info. has been given earlier to the school, and felt like requesting for her to read the numbers to me instead for confirmation. But finally I just gave my numbers to her, as I thought she may find it offensive.

Perhaps, other Yr 1 parents here can share, whether u received call from RGS too?
For students taking 3rd language and have their first lesson on 10/1/14 (Friday). This happens to be RGS orientation night.

I have called RGS and was told that the affected students will skip their first lesson and MOELC has been informed.

FYI

Hi mummies and DDs,

Is it advisable to buy everything that is listed on the RGS booklist for Sec one next year?

Are there items or books that they might not use at all ?

Appreciate all opinions.
Thank you

Hello! ^^

You can not buy art materials if your daughter already has them at home. The only subject your daughter should use them in class should be D and T and if she does not have sufficient paint or similar, she could purchase them at the bookshop as the teachers would give advance notification on what to bring.

The A5 exercise books could be used to take notes. Some teachers might request for that book to be used while other teachers would be fine with any type of paper you take notes with or even with your computer. ^^ Hence, it depends on what type of medium your daughter would like to take notes with.

For RGS foolscap, some teachers would also like for that to be used while others would not mind the type of foolscap you use (generally, this is if it does not have another school's crest on it). One pad of foolscap could be used in 1 month if your daughter takes lots of notes on them and if she uses them to do her math worksheets. However, she can also purchase them at the bookshop if she runs out of it.

Math and Science textbooks are more of reference materials rather than used in class. So while they could still be bought but the amount of usage depends on your daughter. The Math books have questions in them if she would like more practice while the Science textbooks can be used for consolidation of the subject.

Hope this helps! ^^

Hi all,

I'm an RGS-girl-to-be, and if all goes smoothly will start my time at RGS next year. I was just wondering if any of you know where to get the school uniform (whether it is available at Bibi & Baba's or we have to wait for the vendor), what is a required purchase (tie, name badge, etc.), and when to get the school uniform.

The full uniform list and address of the vendor, as well as information on the different parts of the uniform, are greatly appreciated.

TIA!

:thankyou:

hi dear,
first of all, welcome to RGS! i cant believe its been almost a year since i've felt the way you do right now šŸ™‚ i hope you're getting really excited about starting this new chapter of your life šŸ™‚ it will be VERY fulfilling, trust me hehe.
secondly, the uniform is available at bibi&baba's, but you can purchase it on the day you get your school books and socks and all that good stuff. i think getting it on that day would be better, so you can just get all you need for the school year in one trip šŸ™‚
name tags will be distributed in 2014, and yup you will know what you need to buy when you get your books and uniform, though i cant remember what that day is called oops.
info on uniform:
1) culottes: we wear them on Wednesdays usually, with our PE shirts. we also wear them with school-approved shirts sometimes on casual occasions ie. if you're going back for CCA (or at least for mine) or to pop in school for a short while to get something on a non-school day. THE SIDE OF THE CULOTTES WITH THE ZIP SHOULD BE WORN BEHIND
2) pinafore: we pin our school badges/name tags on them
3) ties: we wear them on Thursdays for morning assembly
4) blouse: DO NOT BUTTON THE TOP BUTTON OF YOUR BLOUSE and fold the sleeves
5) PE shirt: DO NOT BUTTON THE TOP BUTTON OF YOUR SHIRT and dont fold the sleeves
haha thats all i can think of at the moment šŸ™‚

have a great holiday and get really excited about school!!!!!!!!!! you'll love it. (; and for the rest of the P6s, put your calculators down and stop calculating your potential PSLE score (omg i was doing this 24/7 around this time last year), have fun, and treasure you're primary school friends right now. all the best (though its a bit late) and be happy with your results šŸ™‚ im sure you will do ABSOLUTELY WELL šŸ™‚ hope you get into the school of your choice! you guys will be in my prayers šŸ™‚

love,
your senior (???)
PS: if any of you are SN girls going on to RG please tell me xx

Hi a child,

I've just chanced upon your article.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. It is insightful indeed. :goodpost:

a child:

Hi, just wanna ask about parents' opinion.

What factors prompt you to select RGS say over NYGH ?

Thanks for sharing šŸ˜‰

I had not really considered Nanyang (even though I applied, and was accepted), maybe because I had always been subjected to the RGS prestige-effect, and because my friends / seniors were going there and my parents liked it, etc., but in retrospect those were not really good reasons.

After having been in RGS for 2.5 years, here are some better ideas, I find, on why I love my school:

- Diversity of opportunities, and flexibility. There are many wonderful programs, competitions, and there's something for everyone - if there isn't one you like, you can start your own. I do not think many other schools can match the tens of service projects and clubs, hundreds of programs and competitions, etc. that are offered here. Hearing from my friends from other schools (incl. Nanyang), no other students have this wealth of opportunities - e.g. in Nanyang, extracurriculars appear more structured and well-organized/formal etc., while in RGS they are so many, so diverse, so flexible, and mostly entirely student-run. Some may like this \"boomzness\", some may find it overwhelming.

- Not only is there flexibility in extracurriculars, there is also flexibility in subject combinations. While in other schools there may be academic streams (science, art, commerce etc) - and I know that in Nanyang you need to take Chemistry, another Science, then either a third Science (making it Triple Science) or a Humanities - RGS is much more liberal in this sense. You take 4 content subjects (vs. the 3 in Nanyang) in addition to the compulsory ones, and they can be anything so long as there is one contrasting subject. Therefore, Humanities-inclined students can choose to take Triple Humanities in RGS for example, while they can only take one Humanities subject in Nanyang (if my information is correct). Chemistry is also not compulsory here.

- English vs. Chinese environment - RGS has generally abysmal Chinese standards, while the enthusiasm for English Literature is high. For example - we have the Renaissance Faire (celebrating Elizabethan and Shakespearean England!) next Tuesday, one of many Lit initiatives with students in the Organizing Teams. I am unable to comment on Nanyang, though, but being SAP I would imagine there is a greater focus on Chinese culture.

- Contrary to popular belief, I find the RGS environment rather non-competitive, while Nanyang (or so I've heard) actually ranks the classes. Yes, in RGS many people are over-achievers, and yes, there are those who are cut-throat competitive, but in my experience they are a minority. My friends are wonderful people who would tell me to go to sleep when I'm tired and then stay up all night finishing my part for me. We share notes - in fact, we have a Google Docs with batch-compiled notes. I'm not saying that Nanyang doesn't have these - but I would say that in this aspect and in terms of the environment, RGS has worked for me. It's definitely not the only way that works, though.

- Generalization of above point: wonderful people, comfortable ambience. Caring teachers. And as you go up in the levels you'll get more comfortable with friends and teachers and it's a wonderful feeling sitting outside Queens for example just doing some group work, and saying \"hi\" to all the teachers and friends who pass by and stop to check.

- Intellectual/quirky/innovative atmosphere. If you take the initiative to want to explore more beyond the curriculum, you can count on there being support for you here. Rigorous curriculum - though the same could be said for Nanyang.

(Granted, there are places where I think RGS falls short - but let's save that for another post - and also, in general I think there are more pluses than minuses here and I'm glad I came, most of the time.)

But ultimately, as you will find for each point, it boils down to fit - a more structured/traditional environment, or a more hectic/liberal one? There are also finer details that cannot really be put into words - e.g. the values, characters of the general population, the education philosophy, and emphases of each school - and the best thing you can do is to ask around current students, attend Open House and as many school events as you can to get the feel yourself. Because nobody can give you the answer, except yourself. Each person is different, each journey is different.

Both schools offer wonderful opportunities, and trying to compare which school is better or more rigorous etc. is really like splitting hairs. You can't go wrong with either choice - what's more important is that it's a school where your child is comfortable with spending the next 4 years of her life in.

It is also important how well you use your resources and opportunities that determine your journey in secondary school - because each person takes a unique journey, and yours is your own to create. Getting into the school is only the first step - it does not guarantee a good experience.

Not sure how this turned into such a long rant - or perhaps I'm just very long-winded. Hope that this has given you a better idea of how I view this though! šŸ™‚
