• RE: All About Choosing and Buying Pianos

      bbmummy:
      Hi

I'm deciding between a digital piano and a acoustic piano. Prefer the digital one due to space constrains. My girl started music group class last june. Can the digital piano bring her till grade 2-3? When do kids usually take the Grade 1 test generally? I know an acoustic piano is definitely better but I cant fit that in the room and there are too many distraction in the living room. I only practice piano with her at night so the digital one is preferred as the volume is adustable. I have spoke to one salesperson from a reputable piano shop who said that using a digital piano is not recommended as the kid will take time to adjust back to the piano touch. I'm looking at Yamaha Clavinova CLP series. Any advice?
It is ok to buy a digital piano first (i have actually used one for 9 years, and it was also a clavinova CLP-930, even now, when i am in grade 5 - cause some parents might not be sure whether their child's interest continues, right?) though the salesman is right in saying that the kid will take time to adjust to the piano touch (i do have first hand experience cause i was going around reviewing accoustic piano today and found that playing some of the harder keyed piano was not a very comfortable experience for me).

Anybody who is familiar to or has a schimmel piano (german piano), care to share your thoughts on it? Cause, (as i had mentioned before) i was going around looking for a suitable piano, and i found this piano brand called schimmel which produced (in my opinion), an angelic quality kind of sound. However, it is not very tall, but the salesman said that when comparing heights, the brand does matter because a tall piano of a china piano (no offence intended to those who likes chinese piano) might not produce as good a sound as, for example, a german piano.
Sry, I have no wish to dampen yur spirits, but I would advise people to think twice before they go for third language, actually, because it is very hard to cope with and most quit at about half year. But for those who continue to wish to opt for third language/is currently studying third language, jia yous ( cos receiving EOY marks soon rite?)

Yeah I think you're right... I took up Japanese and I quit just before the June holidays because there's a lot of homework and tests etc. on top of school work, as if school work isn't enough -__-. If you don't work fast, you might not be able to cope with 3rd language... It is also quite time consuming to travel home from Bishan for me... especially if you're staying in the east like me... (:
Same here for me, though i continued. Some of my friends also quitted halfway.

My friend's son was rejected by DHS, he was so upset. He though it is because of GAT, he said how could a school based on GAT to rejected him. (His school result is really not that good 65% average) I have to be cruel to tell him, it is not only GAT, he has to work hard for his PSLE.

Why he thinks it is GAT failed him ? His cousin also rejected few years back, and he was told he failed GAT. I don know the school had simply gave him a reason or it is true. It sent the wrong information to these kids.

      :?

65% is considered bad. Even 85% average for all the subjects may not be good enough.

Actually, it is possible to get in if you are scoring at about 85%. You just have to work hard(like everyone else) and you will score well!
But DHS sets very difficult Math questions (even for assignments), so if he is scoring around 65% he will have to work on his math

      hi all (parents/students)

i wish to know more about DHS and NYGH, anyone can provide more info for it, such as the environment, teachers and students over there........any difference in their IP programme?

as for my gal, she emphasis alot on friendship, so a friendly environment will suit her better.

many thanks in advance for yr input.
Hello, i am a student from dunman high. About your question, DHS has a very friendly environment, and the teachers are very responsible, they give you consultations hours after school so you can clear your doubts. DHS also put a lot of emphasis on your character. About the IP programme, it is a little different from normal schools (school that take O-levels)because for them , they don't really follow the same syllabus, but i am not so sure about NYGH.

Well then, good luck to your end-of-years!

And, if you've the time, do check back here often. Those kids with dsa confirmed offers make their decision between 26 to 30 oct. Your advice may be needed.
      Sure šŸ˜‰

      Hi,

Not sure how many parents here have P6 children. But the online system provided by MOE is an avenue for the students to register their preference online, after they are offered a confirmed place or on the school's waiting list through the school's DSA exercise.

To apply for DSA, you still need to apply directly with the secondary school.

The best is still call up the secondary school you are interested in to apply for DSA and ask for the procedure.
You can go online and apply, for RGS i know, cause i applied dsa last year. They will ask your subject preference and then you will go to the sch on the date and take the GAT test, then a test(if you pass) for the subject that u said u prefere. (the math test was DIFFICULT)

GAT is an important indicator for schools because it gives them an indication of whether the child will be able to cope with the academic rigours of the school. The school would be doing an injustice to the child if it offered a place to the child based on excellence in sports and disregarded his ability to cope with his studies. The child would be miserable if he can't cope. There have been cases where children admitted under Sports DSA transferred out of top schools because they couldn't cope academically and were miserable.

Yes, because it is really quite stressed. I know know people in DHS who are thru sports, and at the beginning of the year, they are coping quite badly, but with the teachers help, they improve A LOT, so no harm trying to get into DHS thru sports, cos the teachers are nice and the environment people are all very friendly

      Other interesting facts:

      1. The independent secondary schools attract the Top 5 % of each PSLE cohort and are targeted at students who are
      clearly university-bound.

      2. The SAP schools normally attract the Top 10% - 20% of each PSLE cohort.

      3. Students who are in the Top 10% of their PSLE cohort will be given an option by the Ministry of Education to study a foreign language (French / German/ Japanese)

      4. NUS High School, SOTA and SST are targeted at students with specific talents.
Sry, I have no wish to dampen yur spirits, but I would advise people to think twice before they go for third language, actually, because it is very hard to cope with and most quit at about half year. But for those who continue to wish to opt for third language/is currently studying third language, jia yous ( cos receiving EOY marks soon rite?) :celebrate:

Glad that my child did not get depressed after 2nd round. He said many people also didnt get in. He now landed in one of top IP sch too and happily going to school everyday. With him, my second child feel Ok for not clearing the 2nd round. It might have negative impact to him though if his brother got in and he didnt. The principal gave out the offer to those who got in in front of the entire P3 at that time and get them to clap for them and congradulate them. :x

Gd for your kids, then šŸ˜„
