Shulim, haha..
A liitle too late but if u guys are looking for good math enrichment programmes, i highly recommend myfirstskool. They provide worksheets that help students think and apply math concepts more effectively. My daughter said she enjoys answering the worksheet because it has vivid colours, pictures, and graphs! They also have topics about SG's food economy and personal diet! These worksheets are awesome! Highly recommend!~
just before this, you posted the same exact message on Sun Sep 24, 2023 8:44 am but with The Learning Lab instead of myfirstskool. -
RE: Is Algebra allowed for PSLE Math?
algebra is allowed and accepted.
the school/HOD/teacher who says that algebra is not acceptable is just another dinosaur. -

That's a clever pricing strategy. Attracts those who judge quality by price. They won't ever get a lot of customers, but those few who are desperate enough to pay will feed them sufficiently to carry on the show.
Hello iwork, sorry not a regular visitor to this forum.
Nicklebee is charging $125/hr per student with max 4 students in the group. It's a 2hrs class, so each lesson is $250. -
RE: Comparing Math Enrichment Programmes
It’s been a long time since anybody talked about TLL. They are now very different from maybe 5-8 years ago, when the bulk of students in many top schools are all TLL students. Now you can only find a few kids in each class who still go for TLL, and rarely for math.

You are entitled to your own conclusions after reading my comments. But I admit I am quite puzzled by your conclusions. And it happen frequently in forum like this where we offer different perspectives. It is acceptable, unless we put each other down.
Can you please quote specific examples of my conclusions that puzzled you?
Your earlier question about how kids are selected for the GEP selection process suggests strongly that you are not local or not a parent.
Of course we can all offer different perspectives but if you are not in the game at all, that’s kind of not credible. -

I don't agree that it is a kiasu issue.
You are sounding the alarm bells for local super kiasu parents to sit up.
We are competing in a global economy.
That our citizens are competitive globally is an existential issue for Singapore. -

Maybe this may get me banned but I think I should call you out.
I personally knew these students from the same primary school:
Student A took GEP selection test, went through 1st round but not 2nd round
Student B did not take GEP selection test.
Both students got 265 for PSLE.
Student C took GEP selection test and didn’t pass 1st round. Got 266 for PSLE.
Any P3 students can volunteer for the GEP selection test? Or any parents know what is the shortlisting criteria for GEP selection test? By academics performance till P3? Or there will be some pre aptitude test that shortlists students based on creativity or something?
Hi bbbay, you have commented a lot in this thread and the other one.
But from your questions (specifically how a kid goes for the GEP test), it is clear that you don't know how the GEP selection process works.
Indeed, this suggests strongly that you are/was not a parent (of kids around P3 age at least)
Are you even in Singapore?
I think it is not good if you throw inaccurate/uninformed info all over the place.
The GEP is not to train selected students to ace the PSLE. -

Yes of course. The kids who are prepped are probably in the top 5% in the first place.
Pre selected students? So the GEP prep class is more like warming up for the already talented. It is not about transforming ordinary students to GEP calibre. it make sense. -

I think the earlier post was about someone's P4 GEP girl polling her P4 GEP classmates, not a P3 girl polling her classmates. If P3, then the number will fluctuate greatly depending on the primary school. Neighbourhood schools could have zero kids going. If ACS, or Nanyang, etc, then it will surely be a very big number.
Someone shared her P3 child found out that approximately 6-7 classmates were attending GEP prep class. If we assume 7 attend and there are on average 5 classes in 181 primary schools in Singapore, based on back of envelope calculations, we have at least 6,335 students going for GEP prep classes. If we assume close to 400 are accepted into GEP and half got in having attended prep class, that’s only like less than 200 students. How come these centres can claim that more than 50% of their students make it to GEP? False advertising to prey on gullible parents while a nonchalant MOE is just maintaining silence.
MOE should just randomly check on any one of the GEP prep centres listed above, just need one centre shown to have falsely advertised, then take action against the centre. That will send a strong message across. Like what MOE did to AristoCare previously. At least, back then MOE under DPM Heng, was not tone deaf to ground issues.
In any case, the definition of prep class is blurry. If the child attended some Math Olympiads class during P1 and 2, does that count as prep? If the parents are savvy and buy a lot of prep-related books, does it count?
The Chinese centers sometimes list all the names (shortened), together with the schools. No reason to doubt that they are telling the truth. (Whether or not the successes are due to the center is another thing)
