    • RE: Catholic High School

      Hi

According to my boy last year, this is how he described the papers.

The question styles for Maths are similar to UNSW, standard is between UNSW and Maths Olympiad.
As for English its Compo. Please do not write the usual style that students like to write.
Write something totally original and out-of-box while sticking to the topic given.

    • RE: DSA 2014

After going through the list of schools at the MOE website. I realised something.

The participating schools are categorised by niche school, autonomous schools etc etc. Not all secondary schools in Singapore participated in DSA.

All AS school do not have any niche at all.

May I ask experienced parents, if you choose AS schools, what path do you select ? Academics only since they do not seem to have any niche ? I d not want to assume that since AS school do not list their niche, we are only allowed to choose the academics path.

      Thanks

    • RE: DSA 2014

      Hi dear all parents

Mu child is strong in English, Maths and Science. Gaining strength in Chinese, mainly in band 2. He’s musically inclined, with mainly distinctions in his theory and practical, in Grade 5 now. Active in chess, and hoping to enter the National Junior Squad this year. Joined the Scouts since P4.

Do you think he can opt for DSA Academics ? Or should he opt for DSA niche ?

Anyone knows what kinda commitment ( DSA niche ) the kid have to put in, if enter school thru this path ?

      Thanks all for kind help.

    • RE: DSA 2014

      Hi 123abc

yeah, he’s the first batch for the new syllabus in English, Critical Thinking.

      Thanks for your answer.

I’d like to ask a very silly question.

I understand that DSA has a few routes, GEP, Niche like music etc etc and academics.

I do understand the rationale for GEP and niche strength such as chess or music.

How about thru academics ? What’s the rationale for applying for DSA thru academics ? As a back up, in case the PSLE results not as good ? The thing is, if our child is able to attain the 80% - 85% range for all subjects in order to meet the DSA requirements , wouldn’t they be able to do so too, for the PSLE ?

Is my expectations for my child reasonable ?

I read somewhere the schools knows what they’re looking for.

Can any experienced parents share, the importance of being well-rounded to the selectors ? If it is extremely important, then I would understand the rationale for DSA Academics.

Thank you all for invaluable sharing.

      In P5 or P6 ?

      Thanks all for help.

      hi Lifeishard

My child is in this school, level 4. So far in the years he’s in this school, the teacher seldom leave them alone. Probably, only like 2 times a year ? Prior to that, she’ll tell the class and gave them work to do.

Does yr child’s teacher did this often ? If it is then it might be a big concern. In which level is yr child in ?

    • RE: Is okay say no to Ipad/Iphone?

I flatly refused to get an Ipad for my son.

However, he being a boy, I do understand that boys like to play interactive games. It actually helps them in their social life in school as the boys do talk about such games in class.

Thus, I only allow him to play computer games, Wii or even our Iphones. ONLY 3 times per week, for only 30 mins per time. However, I’ll let him play 45 mins of Wii as it has a longer set of game with actions. He understand the ground rules. Homework ( school or mummy’s ) first then play.
