Hello all,
Hope to find out from mummies here, do you allow your child to have facebook account and let them use it as a means of communication with her classmates?
Do you allow them to use Facebook especially during the last SA exam?
I was furious, because my girl actually open up a fb account herself and use it when she was supposed to be studying for exam. Her results ended up only improved by a mark.
Thanks for reading.

RE: Tutor Niedino: Pri Science Questions and Concepts
Hi Autor2001,
I just got the reply from \"Boss \" of the teacher.
Reply was :
The structure can be rigid, but not the shape which should only be fixed.
I also asked what is the right answer for PSLE.
The reply was :
strictness in PSLE marking is an unknown year-on-year, what the school would do is teach pupils the most accurate responses to such questions. Thus, by being strict at the school level, it aims to prepare every pupil well for PSLE and beyond, where science at higher levels require even more specific terminology.
Just to share.atutor2001:
Below are just my views on the proper key words to use and the reasons :
Definitions
1. Plant cells have a regular shape. (instead of \"fixed shape\" because the shape of different parts of a plant can be different. On the other hand \"regular\" means the shape can form a pattern - which is true for all plant cells)
2. Plant cells have rigid cell wall. (instead of \"fixed\" because \"rigid\" highlights the main characteristic of cell wall, which is \"stiff\" i.e. giving it strength to support and act as \"skeleton\" for the plant. On the other hand, \"fixed\" is too general)
Functions of Cell Walls
1. To protect the cell.
2. To support the cell so as to give it / maintain a regular shape. (instead of \"fixed the shape of the cell\" because the shape of a plant cell can change a little if the vacuole is deprived of water - it will shrink and distort. So plant cell depends on both the cell wall and the vacuole to maintain its shape.) -
RE: Tutor Niedino: Pri Science Questions and Concepts
Hi atutor2001,
Teacher has final say.Case close, still answer is fixed and not rigid. She feels that she is right.
No one is able to clarify what is accepted in psle.thanks
Joyatutor2001:
He he he. The teacher's \"England very good.\" (Just added : \"fixed by the cell wall\" cannot be written as \"fixed cell wall\")Leanne:
I got a reply from her teacher:
In Science, the specific meanings of the words is important.
Different adjectives means different things in Science.
According to Longman, the word rigid means \"stiff, not moving or bending\" - a movement.
However, we are looking for the inability of the cell to change shape - because it has been fixed by the cell wall.
I have googled the common meanings of \"fixed\" shown below :
1. Firmly in position; stationary
2. established; settled; set (e.g. at a fixed time; a fixed price)
As for \"rigid\", the meanings are :
1. Not flexible or pliant; stiff
2. Not moving; fixed
Under normal usage, \"fixed\" used as an adjective often means (1) \"fastened - no change in position\" or (2) \"no change in quantity\". If we want to say that the shape of something does not change, then for clarity we should say \"cell wall has fixed SHAPE\".
Therefore, if we use the term \"fixed cell wall\", it could mean that the (1) position of the cell wall does not move, (2) the quantity of cell wall does not change. Science is rigorous - such alternative interpretations must be avoided.
On the other hand, \"rigid\" effectively means that the shape does not change. Therefore, it is more appropriate to use \"rigid cell wall\" if we want to communicate that the shape of the cell wall does not change.
In the good old days, my kids' science teachers hate me. They always got me wrong, thinking that I was hard up for the marks - explaining that it is difficult for them to change the marks after they were cornered. It really makes me mad when they give \"crab\" explanation without any thoughts at all - teaching the wrong concept. -
RE: Tutor Niedino: Pri Science Questions and Concepts
Tang:
Leanne:
state the function of the cell wall.
The answer is as above.
We are discussing whether fixed or rigid is a better answer.Teacher wants fixed and not rigid but most guide book or internet, we see RIGID.
Anyway, teacher feels its wrong to use rigid.
Thinking the same thing here...is it necessary to give additional info/description? What is the context of the qn?
Hi,
The cell wall gives the plant a regular shape.
or
The cell wall gives the plant a good shape.
-
RE: Tao Nan

RE: Anyone has kid that are p5 in 2010?
Hi Janet,
No problem.
Yes, school is different from the yester years...
Agreed, as long as he has given his best, that is the most important.
Joyjanet_lee88:
Hi Joy,
Thanks for your input.
Son having Maths paper 2day, Eng yesterday.
I can't believe how stressful
school is. He told me the vocab section in his EL exam were tough...so I have kinda prepared myself mentally.
I try not to hold high hopes so that I won't be disappointed, but know that he will do his best. -
RE: Anyone has kid that are p5 in 2010?
Hi Janet,
For supp. class, it all depends on school.
For dd school, the average class are given twice for supp and the top class is only once a week.
Yes, Pri six is really loads of work.Time mgt is very impt.
How is your ds exam going on?All the best.
Joyjanet_lee88:
I heard that P5 kids have to attend twice weekly supplementary lessons and it's very hectic...so I'm rather worried about the assessment books I bought for him...whether he has time to do
Come P6, it's even busier esp in the 2nd term. A neighbour's daughter just finished her PSLE...mother told me daughter goes to school from morning to evening Mon-Fri :!: Will tell CL tutor not to give him too much hw.
Hi Brenda,
Pls advise me on helpful titles for P5. Thanks

RE: Anyone has kid that are p5 in 2010?
Looks like primary six really has tons of works ahead.
For now, all the best to pri five children who are taking their sa2 exam.
Joyphankao:
From my experience, the school will give them so many extra supplementary classes and tonnes of trial papers that they would dread to do any more assessment books, and I know for my ds2, he'd baulk at any tuition homework, so begs me not to send him for any.Brenda10:
My nephew just sent 2 big plastic of books/assessments over:
Just do a stock count and realize:
Text Book: EL/HCL/Science/Maths and an untouched Maths 6B workbook
Social Study Text book/Activity Book (untouched)
Science Assessments book/bloster : 12 :!:
Maths : 3
Chinese : 7
I guess I have to spend time to slowly scan through and see what is suitable.
Already this year in p5, they had supplementary classes 2x/week plus some Saturdays. Can imagine next year. :!: -
