Time flies - I remember introducing myself as a sec 1 on this forum three years ago. Just yesterday, I finished my last day of school as a sec 4 and I'll be graduating soon. :') It's been a long ride, but I've finally reached the end! I'll be happy to answer any questions about life in NY or my personal experience πŸ™‚ (If anyone is wondering, my CCA was AV Club!)

Hi there, I'm a Sec 1 student studying in NYGH and I'm in Nanyang Audio-Visual Club πŸ™‚ if you have any questions about the school, feel free to ask me and I'll answer them to the best of my ability! πŸ™‚

      Have a nice day πŸ™‚ πŸ•Ί

Hi juxta, how are you? I believe you are Sec 3 this year rite? How are you coping with your studies & other activities so far? For Audio-Visual club, do you need to havè any prior experience/talents before joining this CCA? Is it easy to join? What did you do for this CCA? Like need to stay back for other events besides the normal CCA days? How many times per week for this CCA; which day & time of CCA? Do you need to go back on Saturday for other activities? Besides Audio-Visual Club, is it all CCAs under Clubs/Societies are held once a week, not so taxing? But is it easy to join in the 1st place?

Besides 3rd language, CCA, what other activities are held after curriculum hours? In normal days, what time did you usully get back home & how often did you not require to stay back late in school? I mean is it true that almost Mon to Fri usually have to stay in school till 5-6pm?

Sorry for my long-winded questions...Highly appreciate if you can share with me your life in NYGH & what you know about the CCAs. ^-^ TIA

Hello ganjiongspider, thanks for checking in! Yes, I am Sec 3 now! 2 years have flown by. :yikes:

To be honest, I faced a lot of difficulties with coping this year as I had to adapt to sec 3 academics while balancing several commitments. In particular, I was involved in the Nanyang film-making, gala dinner musical and founders’ day celebrations which took up a huge amount of my time but they have been incredibly rewarding experiences πŸ™‚ .
For Audio-Visual club, do you need to havè any prior experience/talents before joining this CCA?
The auditions require you to submit a portfolio of your photographs. You're expected to have an interest and basic skills in photography.
Is it easy to join?
I’m not sure what your definition of β€œeasy” is, but the CCA is slightly competitive to get into due to the number of sign-ups.
What did you do for this CCA?
AV specialises in lights, sound, photography and videography. We help out for school concerts or productions as the backstage crew. Personally, I helped out for various events, including Drama SYF and Nanyang 100 events. I also participated in some AV-related competitions.
Like need to stay back for other events besides the normal CCA days?
Yes. Most of what AV does happens outside our CCA days. We have to be present for rehearsals, so the intensity varies depending on the event. For example, a NDP Concert may need only 2-3 rehearsals but rehearsals for the gala dinner musical lasted for 2 months.
How many times per week for this CCA; which day & time of CCA?
CCA this year was twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3.30-5.30pm.
Do you need to go back on Saturday for other activities?
This depends on your schedule. For me, I had to go back on Saturdays this year for musical rehearsals. In 2016, I participated in a competition called Odyssey of the Mind (OM) which required me to go back to school on Saturdays, so whether or not you have to go back depends on the commitments you have.
Besides Audio-Visual Club, is it all CCAs under Clubs/Societies are held once a week, not so taxing?
I’m not sure about the schedule for other clubs and societies CCAs - you may want to check the school website for more information, but it should be around 1-2 times per week. AV is definitely not β€œslack” despite being a clubs and societies CCA as we have to constantly provide support for school events.
Besides 3rd language, CCA, what other activities are held after curriculum hours? In normal days, what time did you usully get back home & how often did you not require to stay back late in school? I mean is it true that almost Mon to Fri usually have to stay in school till 5-6pm?
Again, it depends on your commitments. We may stay back for supplementary lessons, rehearsals, preparation for competitions or other events in the afternoon.
My schedule was very packed as I had several commitments this year, so this definitely doesn't apply for everyone out there! There are people who do have a less packed schedule, so it really comes to down to what you have on your plate.
For the first semester, as I had movie filming, competitions, CCA and other commitments, this meant that I stayed back daily most of the time. During the musical period (term 3), rehearsals were daily except for Wednesdays, but my Student-Initiated Assignment was conducted on Wednesdays which meant that I also stayed back daily. My \"normal days\" consisted of me returning home around 5.30-7.30pm. Recently, with things finally winding down, I finally have some time to breathe. πŸ˜“

I apologise for the lengthy response but I hope it helps!

During one NYGH open house, I vaguely remembered seeing students

purchasing food at the canteen using some kind of coupon/ticket?

Could someone please elaborate on how that work?
Hello! I think it's a special system for open house, because we just use money to buy food πŸ™‚

Can anyone advice how many sets of uniform/PE will be sufficient?

Can NYPS girls wear the NYPS skirt if it still fits?
Hello! I was from NYPS and the skirts in NYGH are slightly different from NYPS. During orientation, if some students couldn't get NYGH uniforms they would wear their school uniforms, so maybe it's good to keep it around. If not, nope πŸ™‚

      Popick:
May I know usually how many projects in a week/weeks? Are these projects contribute to their score for promotion?

I am still hesitating whether to appeal for my girl to IP instead of O in another school as her t-score is good. Am worry with so many projects to handle, she may left with no time to self study even she is diligent and well discipline. Please help... I feel very bad that I may have chose the wrong path for her and appeal maybe the last chance to go IP.
Hello there! It depends on the week, but we have more assignments than projects. Yes, they contribute to our scores, but we also have non-graded subjects which assign projects / SIAs. ( you can PM me for more details!) We don't really have projects every week, but I would say we have around 2-3 a month. These can be completed as most of the time we get to pick our group members and as long as you manage your time properly then they should be manageable πŸ™‚
In our opinion, let your Daughter try to appeal! My Sec 1 has been very enriching and I have learnt a lot not only academically but also from everyone around me. Especially since she is diligent and well disciplined, I'm sure she'll have no problem coping! I have friends who don't have the highest T-scores but they are some of the most hardworking people I know and they do very well too πŸ™‚ Basically in Sec 1 the project workload is manageable in my opinion so you don't have to worry too much about it πŸ™‚
      Have a good day πŸ™‚

Anyone knows if 3rd language can be used to replace the grade of either Geography or History in Year 1 and 2?

Nope, 3rd lang can't replace any subjects. If done well ( I don't know the criteria) 3rd can be included as an additional subject to improve your MSG but if you didn't do well it won't be included in your MSG πŸ™‚
Need some advise here.

      Sorry, What is TCC?
When do the students start using the Ipads? Sec One or Two? Is it subsidised?
Seems that the teachers uses notes and not the textbooks, in that case, do they even need to buy the textbooks?

Hello! I'm not from a TCC Class, so this is all I know about TCC.
TCC ( The Connected Classroom) is a program that has an emphasis on linking different subjects together and working in groups. (It was started this year.)
TCC is much more hands on and group work and presentations are much more common - so they count a bigger weightage to our MSG.
The curriculum is pretty much the same, just that there's more 'out of the box' thinking. Also, TCC has this subject called CU3 - or common unit. This subject is basically a lot of group work and presentations that combine different subjects and if I'm not wrong it consisted of nearly 30% of our EOY!
TCC is completely optional - interested students and parents signed up on reporting day. Students who get into TCC are randomly selected. In my year, there were 3 TCC classes, so around 60 students.
For example, a History assignment in TCC could include Geography. For TCC students, they start using iPads from Sec 1 whereas the rest of us buy iPads at the end of sec 1 and start using them from sec 2. The school has a vendor that offers subsidised prices for certain models and we order through them - of course you can buy on your own.
Textbooks are not necessary ( from what I experienced this year) but good for additional practice and reference!
      Hope I helped πŸ˜„

      Juxta,

Thanks. Yr info is very useful for new parents.

For the iPad in Sec 2, what's the min requirement?
      eg. iPad2 acceptable?

      16/32/64GB?

Wifi + Cellular or just Wifi model is acceptable?
Hello! Glad I could help πŸ™‚
Yes, iPad 2 is suitable. However, there is a list of apps that require to be downloaded ( eg Google Docs) that require ios 7 and above, so you can use older models but just make sure your ios is up to date! ( and your ipad can support the ios)
The school requires at least 32 GB, iPad 2 and you can choose between wifi and wifi + cellular. I think just wifi is enough as the school provides it πŸ™‚
Understand that Yr 1 students can choose betw e-book or hard copy print for Sci (Biology & Chemistry).

      * Which is recommended or more widely used in NYGH?

      * For those who choose e-books, the girls will bring their own iPads to sch? Is the e-book compatible with iPad2 WIFI?

Anyone can advise on print or ebook option?

Btw, heard that teachers hardly use the math & sci textbks. Is it true? If yes, is it ok not to buy?

I just checked with dd and she says notes are given to students and these are what they use in school. In general, textbooks are more like your own reading materials.

I got for dd the hard copy, so I don't know about the compatibility with ipad2.

Btw, the ipad 1:1 programme only starts from Sec 2 unless you opt for TCC classes in Sec 1.
My teachers hardly touched the textbooks - I sometimes use it for additional exercises and reference, but otherwise it isn't used in lessons. Unless you are in TCC ( which uses ipads), most people use the hardcover copy. If you want something to refer to, then there's no harm in buying. Otherwise I think it's okay not to buy!

Hi, do the teachers provide additional support for kids who are weaker in certain subjects ? Do most kids have tuition I wonder ?

Hi there! The teachers in nygh are really friendly and approachable so yes help is provided πŸ™‚ We can ask them questions via email, request for more worksheets and arrange consultations. Usually, if the teacher senses that you are struggling, they will arrange consultations with you but of course you can also ask for them! Remedial sessions are also held and nearing exam periods teachers will provide consultation sessions in case we have any questions πŸ™‚
As for tuition , i know only a few schoolmates who attend tuition but nearly everyone in my class doesn't attend tuition as we all feel that the school offers sufficient practice and we also have cca commitments.
      have a great day!
