When dd was in lower sec last year, lessons ends at 2.15pm/2.30pm.

For the upper Sec, it will depend on the subjects that the child takes.

School starts late at 8.15am everyday, recess are staggered so it will be different for different levels.
Based on dd’s current sec 3 timetable, her recess break is at around 11.30am. Recess last for about 45 mins to an hour.
CCA starts from 3.30pm , so the child can have another ‘tea break’ from school dismissal time to 3.30pm if she stays back for CCA.
In any case, the child shouldn’t have to go hungry.
If there is any valid reason, just let the teacher know and the teacher can allow the child time to eat under special circumstances.
That’s what dd shared with me previously.

Not sure about the CCAs too since selection was back in Sec 1.
Think twice a week seems to be the minimum except perhaps for the Audio- Visual club?
They will have to cover the school events though, so the timings may not be so fixed?
There is a CCA fair before the selection of CCAs, so the child can find out more information then.

Hi there, I'm a Sec 1 student studying in NYGH and I'm in Nanyang Audio-Visual Club 🙂 if you have any questions about the school, feel free to ask me and I'll answer them to the best of my ability! 🙂

                Have a nice day 🙂 🕺
Hi juxta, how are you? I believe you are Sec 3 this year rite? How are you coping with your studies & other activities so far? For Audio-Visual club, do you need to havè any prior experience/talents before joining this CCA? Is it easy to join? What did you do for this CCA? Like need to stay back for other events besides the normal CCA days? How many times per week for this CCA; which day & time of CCA? Do you need to go back on Saturday for other activities? Besides Audio-Visual Club, is it all CCAs under Clubs/Societies are held once a week, not so taxing? But is it easy to join in the 1st place?

Besides 3rd language, CCA, what other activities are held after curriculum hours? In normal days, what time did you usully get back home & how often did you not require to stay back late in school? I mean is it true that almost Mon to Fri usually have to stay in school till 5-6pm?

Sorry for my long-winded questions...Highly appreciate if you can share with me your life in NYGH & what you know about the CCAs. ^-^ TIA

Hello ganjiongspider, thanks for checking in! Yes, I am Sec 3 now! 2 years have flown by. :yikes:

To be honest, I faced a lot of difficulties with coping this year as I had to adapt to sec 3 academics while balancing several commitments. In particular, I was involved in the Nanyang film-making, gala dinner musical and founders’ day celebrations which took up a huge amount of my time but they have been incredibly rewarding experiences 🙂 .
For Audio-Visual club, do you need to havè any prior experience/talents before joining this CCA?
The auditions require you to submit a portfolio of your photographs. You're expected to have an interest and basic skills in photography.
Is it easy to join?
I’m not sure what your definition of “easy” is, but the CCA is slightly competitive to get into due to the number of sign-ups.
What did you do for this CCA?
AV specialises in lights, sound, photography and videography. We help out for school concerts or productions as the backstage crew. Personally, I helped out for various events, including Drama SYF and Nanyang 100 events. I also participated in some AV-related competitions.
Like need to stay back for other events besides the normal CCA days?
Yes. Most of what AV does happens outside our CCA days. We have to be present for rehearsals, so the intensity varies depending on the event. For example, a NDP Concert may need only 2-3 rehearsals but rehearsals for the gala dinner musical lasted for 2 months.
How many times per week for this CCA; which day & time of CCA?
CCA this year was twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 3.30-5.30pm.
Do you need to go back on Saturday for other activities?
This depends on your schedule. For me, I had to go back on Saturdays this year for musical rehearsals. In 2016, I participated in a competition called Odyssey of the Mind (OM) which required me to go back to school on Saturdays, so whether or not you have to go back depends on the commitments you have.
Besides Audio-Visual Club, is it all CCAs under Clubs/Societies are held once a week, not so taxing?
I’m not sure about the schedule for other clubs and societies CCAs - you may want to check the school website for more information, but it should be around 1-2 times per week. AV is definitely not “slack” despite being a clubs and societies CCA as we have to constantly provide support for school events.
Besides 3rd language, CCA, what other activities are held after curriculum hours? In normal days, what time did you usully get back home & how often did you not require to stay back late in school? I mean is it true that almost Mon to Fri usually have to stay in school till 5-6pm?
Again, it depends on your commitments. We may stay back for supplementary lessons, rehearsals, preparation for competitions or other events in the afternoon.
My schedule was very packed as I had several commitments this year, so this definitely doesn't apply for everyone out there! There are people who do have a less packed schedule, so it really comes to down to what you have on your plate.
For the first semester, as I had movie filming, competitions, CCA and other commitments, this meant that I stayed back daily most of the time. During the musical period (term 3), rehearsals were daily except for Wednesdays, but my Student-Initiated Assignment was conducted on Wednesdays which meant that I also stayed back daily. My \"normal days\" consisted of me returning home around 5.30-7.30pm. Recently, with things finally winding down, I finally have some time to breathe. 😓

I apologise for the lengthy response but I hope it helps!

                    Hi juxta,

Thank you so much for your response! Your explanation was very detailed & It really gave me a clear picture of a typical life of student in NYGH. And WOW!!! You are indeed a all-rounder student to me! With the heavily committed daily activities in school, how do you find time for study or project? Which subjects are the most difficult to score? Do you have any tuitions for some subjects or totally no time or not necessary at all? Can give some study tips/advise on how to cope with the examinable subjects? ^-^ Once again, TIA!

                      Hi Juxta

Thank you so much for all your sharings. :hugs:
Didn't know AV club is also conducted twice a week, in addition to covering school events.
During PTM in May, the teacher also told us that this is a rather taxing year for many as it is an SYF year, followed by Nanyang 100th Anniversary Celebrations. (NY100 Film, Gala Dinner Musical..) 😓

All the Best for next week's EOY Exams!
                      加油, Juxta! :rahrah: :rahrah:

How do parents help their child cope with issues such as graded groupwork but none of the group members contributed or bothered to do, left your child to put together the assignment for submission. I find this occurrence rather common.

End of year tchr-child meeting is coming up, should this be told to the FT?
