• RE: P1 Chinese - General Discussion

      Hi parents,

Am thinking of finding a student tutor for DD… Have tried experienced tutors but DD seemed to be shy and uneasy. We speak English at home and wish to develop her interest in Chinese.
Any thought or advice will be appreciated! TIA!

      Hi,

I am a Year 5 student from DHS and currently using my mother's account. I am conducting a survey for PW and will appreciate if you can help with the survey during your free time. Thank you!

Can't help but notice the airplane noise every 5 mins or so during the open house. Are the classrooms insulated from the noise? The noise sounds distracting to me.

Is it a long walk from the sch to the nearest mrt station as 158 bus doesn't seem to come that frequently?

also, the P seems very academically focused, over and above everything else like holistic devt, is that true?

How would you compare this school to the one at far west?

      Many thanks for your advice.
      Hi,
The classrooms are not soundproof and there are indeed airplane noise during school hours especially nearing national day every year. It is usually better during the start of the year and after national day It may seem distracting but the students and teachers kind of got used to it after that and it affects lessons to little extent. Some teachers may choose to project their voices or wait for the planes to pass.

The walk from mrt to DHS is about 12-15 mins (less than 10 mins if you are faster,20 if you are slower). 158 comes around every 15 minutes and many students prefer to walk to the mrt or to school from the back gate instead.

Yes, there is indeed A lot of focus on academics but the school focus a lot on holistic development too. It does inculcate values and emphasise a lot on character development. It gives students opportunities to participate in various competitions, events, seminars that are non academics related through CCA,VIA, programmes, etc. For example, the open house is organised by the students themselves. The teachers give students opportunities to organise events, participate in events, etc. It stretches the students potential as it is an IP school after all. However, strong emphasis is still placed on academics as students are running a 6 years marathon for the A level in the end.

I am not in the position to compare the school in the West to DHS as I don't understand much about the other school. Maybe other parents can give their opinions on this...
Hi parents,

My daughter is weak in Chinese comprehension even after enrolling her into tuition classes. I will like to find a Chinese Tutor who can teach 1 to 1 for her. Preferably can travel to the East. Please advice. Thanks

      Hi weiweigrace

I have a friend who teaches Chinese 1to 1 and is good in teaching comprehension segment. As a Chinese Tutor myself, I can say that she is able to grasp the student's weaknesses rather well and target on those. You may like to contact her. Thanks and all the best for your dd

      Hi kiasufoo,

Can you pm her contact as well? My gal is weak in the comprehension element as well. Most of the marks I noted were lost in this area. Thanks!
Hi Belle & weiweigrace,

The tips look great. Problem is when my dd is in the actual examination surroundings, nerves set in and many of these \"ought to do\" steps are thrown out the window. Timing is also the cause of nerves as they rush through and make careless mistakes or not reading the question carefully.

The Math Paper 1 is only 50 minutes, the kids don't even have time to think properly. The pupils who are strong in Math breeze through this Paper 1 and even have ample time to check their work. But for the weaker ones like my dd, to be able to finish all questions is a feat already, let alone have accuracy. So I just remind dd that Paper 1 consists of the easier questions, she must try to focus as at the end of the day, the marks in this Paper can save her from failing. I have to keep telling her she can do it.
The tips given by the other parents are good. My 1st dd had the problem with speed then too but she was considered to be good in math but just slow. Speed and accuracy comes with routine practices. She solved at least 5 problem sums everyday and reviewed them the next day. Her tuition teacher gave her a practice paper to complete every week too. Fast thinking process can be trained by doing the same type of questions over and over again. Confidence level will be built up when our kids knows what to do and how to do the questions and the 'panic attacks' will not happen so often.

A mummy whose dd just finished psle last year( or chinese tutor) is popping by… Chinese or any other subject is actually not difficult to score as long as your dc is willing to read and memorize every word from the 词语手册。Take note of the pinyin and 搭配. For compre, you may wish to try to ask dc to circle the words they don’t understand and check the dictionary. Understand the passage first and the questions will be easier to answer. Techniques in answering are really just picking up key words in the questions and searching for them in the passage. The rest will be practice. I always believe in practice makes perfect. The grades will jump when they practice more in the correct way. Don’t ‘protect’ your dc too much, they need to learn it the hard way. I always have parents who speak up for their dc when I give them ‘too much’ homework but if the children themselves don’t try, and always rely on their parents, they will really become the so call strawberry generation… They can’t finish their work,it is their problem. They must learn to explain to their teachers themselves but not turn to their parents for help.
