I think Esteema has given a very good analogy of a pupa trying to breakout from the cocoon, into a baby butterfly, try to flap the little wings

Sec 1 is a \"honeymoon\" year, out of the next 4 to 6 years ahead, No mid-year SA1 exam. This is the best time for them learn to be independent, manage their daily time table, studies workload. Sec 2 is a busy year, due to streaming at year end.

If forever they always rely on tuition Tr All the time, they will never be able to learn on their own, by themselves. Even if they try to learn on their own, made some mistakes here and there, it is all right, because it is from mistakes that they learn too.
Very good point. Thank you for the advice. Will let DD try studying herself

Dd's Chinese tutor asked to check if planning to continue lessons for sec 1... DD has always liked her lessons for the past 2 years with her and we are very grateful for her support throughout the entire preparation process for PSLE.. Dd got a decent grade in the end and she want to opt for higher Chinese in sec sch. I'm thinking of letting her try to study herself in sec 1 instead of having tuitions like in pri sch but afraid that she can't cope with the rigor in sec sch hcl.. Heard that it's very tough. My ds is still currently under the same tutor and has started preparations for P5 next year already. Any advice from parents on whether I should continue tuition for DD or shd I stop for a while and see DD can cope?

I thought you are a chinese tutor yourself?

    • RE: Looking for Chinese home tutor

      Hi,

Teacher Zhuang has been tutoring DD for 2 years until PSLE. She’s patient and engaging. DD used to reject Chinese but slowly like it after a few lessons with her. A highly recommended experienced teacher

Any parent found student tutor for their children? DD is shy and uneasy around experienced tutors. Thinking of finding a student tutor to develop her interest in Chinese...

Any thoughts will be appreciated. TIA!

      Hi kiasufoo,
I am a student tutor with 3 years of tutoring experience with kindergarten and primary school children. I was from Dunman High and just finished A levels. Just expressing my thoughts on your daughter's issue, I used to tutor students like your girl, quiet and reserved. Their parents preferred student tutors as it offers tuition at a low cost and also it helps children to open up more as they feel more comfortable with tutors who seemed like elder \"siblings\" to them. Do pm if you wish to know more about my experience with my students or if you are interested to let me tutor your girl! Hope to be able to help

Thanks. Would like to know how you interest your tutees in learning..

More of her personality. Very quiet girl. We don't speak Chinese at home so may be also due to lack of confidence. Any good centres or tutoring groups to recommend in the East?

You can always consider http://www.tienhsia.com, beijinglanguage.com.sg or http://www.berriesworld.com.

Have tried Berries, she found it too difficult... Any comment on TienHsia?

Hi kiasuFoo, is the shyness more to do with her character or other reasons such as lack of confidence or worried of making mistakes? If its more of the latter, you might want to explore the type of small group Chinese lessons where group activities like skit/games/songs are carried out to cultivate the kids' interest while improving their command of the language at the same time.

On a side note, actually (most of) those experienced tutors should be able to 'break the ice' given their experiences. 😛 Might just take longer to warm to/click with them.
