Hi, my girl will be registering for Year 2018 In-Take this year and I’m looking at Alexandra Primary School as priority. I would say we will be under phase 2C and staying <1km. What are the chances for my girl to get into the school?
If balloting require at phase 2C and not selected by the school, I would need to go phase 2Cs. For this phase, I’m looking at Gan Eng Seng, Zhangde & queentown. Which school will be a better as in curriculum? And what are the chances being able to get into the school?

RE: How to train/ teach a kid to Reading and Learning?
slmkhoo:
Hi Slmkhoo, my typo. Its DD, not DS. She was in K2 now. She learn phonics before in preschool but the programme has stopped now. But somehow whatever she learn, she tend to forget. All she cares about is cartoon and play. Maybe Im too anxious or worry that she could not keep up if she going to primary 1 next yr. I admit that i keep pressing and agitated about her of not knowing/recognize the word.
First, how old is he? If he's under 4yo, I would say don't even bother to do anything, just keep reading to him. Word recognition will come one day. Some kids prefer to start with phonics, while others take more quickly to word recognition.lostkitty:
Hi All, I would like to tag on to this tread as I need advice from all of you.
Recently I found out that my DS could not remember the word (Like what, were, was, want, etc) when I wrote it down on the white board. But when I show her the storybook with that particular word, she can pronounce it correctly. What I notice is that she can memories the whole story (Same goes for chinese storybook) but could not remember the word itself. Common words like and, he, for, of she can pronounce it.
What can I do to improve her word recognition. Which approach works best on her: dolch word lists or whold word approach?
I really need help as I'm out of patient and ideas on how to help my DS. Thanks in advance.
If he's already 4yo, you can try using the Dolch list for common sight words (which is the whole word approach, I'm not sure why you distinguish them?). I used a simple booklet with my younger girl when she was 5yo (URL below). You can also start introducing phonics. At the same time, don't stop reading to him, and even if he memorises the books, it's OK. Reading is also for exposure to sentence structure, vocab etc, not just calling out words.

If your son is still in preschool, then you should be patient. Some kids don't learn to read so early, and it's to do with brain development or willingness, not necessarily intelligence. My younger girl who I mentioned above only started learning to read at 5.5yo because she refused to start earlier. Her reason was that she liked being read to! I didn't press her because, when you think about it, what is there to read in preschool that's so important? I continued to read to her, and her overall language development was good, just that she didn't read. But once I started to teach her, she got from zero to Magic Tree House in 6 mths, and was reading Enid Blyton a few months after that. She has always done very well academically too (now in JC2), so her later start hasn't hampered her in any way.
If your son is already in K2 or P1 and still isn't showing any progress, then it may be time to get him checked by a professional.
I want the best for her but Im not that patient and easily get agitated about her of not knowing anything.
I would start using the link above you provide to train her up slowly and continue reading books.
Is Magic Tree House a series of book? Does Oxford reading tree comparable to Magic Tree House?
Where can I purchase it from? -

RE: How to train my kid to go toilet at nite?

Im also not sure why she say pain. I'm trying to save on diaper cost cos if diaper is dry the next morning, I would have to throw away. Will consider finding it on Qoo10 or Kiddy palace...
Buy from some mumpreneurs or...?lostkitty:
So I would say a training pant would be a wise choice for money-saving. Anyone has recommendation for training pants that are affordable?

Swim diapers also useful

Am sure you can find some on Qoo10 and taobao.com. Or just walk into Kiddy Palace.
But can only hold 1 accident per night. Somehow, I feel training pants are not very breathable...you might want to apply some Drapolene on the bum, esp in hot spells like these few weeks.
Dryers isn't very absorbent - I wonder why she complained pain??? Buy P&G Pampers or MamyPoko. -
RE: How to train my kid to go toilet at nite?
Alright… Mayb I’m too over-reacted on the training part. My girl in fact can nap thru without diapers for like 2 hrs and I tot mayb she is able to do so for nighttime. Ok… I’m gg to relax and go with the flow.
But 1 issue, as my mum is sleeping with my girl during weekday and you know elderly may needs rest during nighttime, would it be best that my girl wear those training pants instead? Then my mum would only need to wake her up one time at night?
Those pull up pants works like diapers rite? I have drypers pull up pants and if im not wrong, my girl keep complaining buttock pain. Furthermore, as it is disposable, it cost some money too.

I have mattress protector but just that have to keep changing and washing the bedsheet. She does not sleep in aircon room. Only during weekend.
Quite common at 4. My kid's record was 3X per week. Even after emptying bladder before bedtime.lostkitty:
Hi I would like to tag on this thread.
Recently I have being training my 4yo girl not to wear diaper at night and occasionally wake up at night to go toilet. However, she gave me this feeling that she is not ready.
1st & 2nd week: she was asked to wake up at about 2am to urine and is able to sleep thru the rest of the night. This happen when she don't drink too much water in the evening. Only 1 time bed-wetting.
Occasionally, she will bed-wetting one or twice on some week.
For the past 2 days, she has being bed-wetting. I wonder if this could due to drinking lots of water in the evening. Her last toilet time was at about 10pm and I tot she could hold on till 1 or 2 am for me to wake her up.
Worst part was I told her to call me if she needs to urine, but she did not. Only 1 time she call out to me but she has already urinated on bed. Even when she has urinated on bed, she don't tell me but slept thru the night with her cold buttock.
I have keep telling her to call me if in need to go toilet but she did not. I asked her can she do it, she say YES but in actual fact is CAN'T.
Somehow I feel that she was not ready to diaper-free.
How should I train her to sleep thru and call me if in need to urine? Please help.....:(:(:(
Just put mattress protector. And get ready your Febreeze!
Increase aircon temp? -
RE: How to train my kid to go toilet at nite?
Funz:
It's hard to limit her fluid intakes as her body temperature are usually quite high and we have being telling her to drink more water. For the time being, since you are still training her, why not still put her in training pants at night. You still continue with what you are doing, waking her up to pee but at least if there's any accident, she will not be sleeping in pee soaked pjs.
When you see that her training pants are consistently dry in the morning, then try removing it for the night.
Limit her fluid intakes in the evenings. Even things like soup and very juicy fruits like watermelon.
What training pants would you suggest?Ikid:
I did get my child to pee before bedtime before 10pm. But she will still urine on bed like before 1am. It's hard to catch her timing now.True, the training pants is a good idea.
Usually before bed, get the child to pee and then middle of the night another time.
Just yesterday night, my girl pee ard 10pm then at 11.40pm I get my girl up to pee. She told me don't have and eventually I told her off. At least a little bit of pee also can. Waited about 15mins plus then she pee a little bit. I get so angry at her that I warned her not to pee on bed. Then before 1am, my hubby get her up to pee also nothing. Then on 2.20am, I get my girl up to pee and again, nothing. I told her to pee since I get her up but she was in dreamland. Head nodding here and there. Eventually, I get so mad in the middle of the night, she pee nothing. :frustrated:
In the end, she did not urine on bed. I'm not sure if it good or bad news. :?
I wonder if she was afraid of me scolding her again and thats y she did not pee or has she really learn how to control her bladder. I wonder... :?
Tonight will try again. Cross finger...

Ikid:
Why not instead of she calling you, you consistently wake her up at the same time every day to make it a habit for her to go to the toilet?
I did. The 1st 2 week called her up at about 2am. Then this week goes haywire. Before 2am she has already urinated.
After reading some thread here on bed-wetting, I think I should make a point to wake her up at 12am should be the safe timing.
