I am a NUS CS major myself and I will not recommend her taking a double major. CS is quite rigorous and extremely competitive so I think she will be better served to just focus on one major. 🙂

    • RE: IB - Tuition/Enrichment Class/Assessment Bks/Past Yr Papers

I don’t teach IB math myself right now but I’ve seen the syllabus. A disclaimer that I’m only offering advice for Math since that’s the only subject I’ve taken a look at. I will say that the syllabus appears to be (normal O Level track syllabus) + (some basic JC topics). So my advice is that should there be a lack of IB specific tuition, find a tutor who came from the JC track and is competent at H2 Math. I think that should suffice.

    • RE: Private schools for retaking Os

I wanted to advise retaking on his own (which was what I did for A Levels, read here http://thecollegedorm.com/tools/retaking-a-levels-private-candidate/) but I agree with the rest- without discipline you're not fixing the root of the problem. Maybe let your child take a year off and try to get your child to \"become a better person\"?

    • RE: Secondary 2 Streaming
Hi , I am supposed to choose my streaming subjects this year , but my school does not provide the subjects i am intrested , and can score well in , what should i do? T^T

Hello, i am a student who graduated from jc last year, so my memory of sec 2 streaming is still fresh 🙂

A thing to always note when it comes to streaming/selecting your combination is to firstly, look at the subjects you're interested in, and secondly, look at the subjects that you are good at, and have the potential to score well in. (BUT interest may not always mean that you'll score well)

Judging from your dilemma, i'm curious to know which subjects you are keen in, and what do you intend to work as in the future. It may seem a long time away, but your choice of subjects now may determine what subjects you get to take at a tertiary level and even in uni. Are you more of a science student, or a humanities student? Do you want to working in the science or arts field in the future?

Also, as a student who has sat for the o-levels and done my fair share of worrying over the exams, I can pretty much assure you that as long as you put in consistent effort towards your studies in sec 3 and 4, leading up to Os, it is very much possible to do well in subjects that you thought you might not perform stellar in. 🙂

Thanks For You Reply ! ^^

      Looking Through My MYE Scores , My Best Subjects are Higher Mother Tougue ( A1 ) , Literature ( A1 ) , History ( A1 ) And Mathematics ( A2 ) , well my weaker ones are my English ( C5 ... ) , Science ( B3 ) .

I should think that I am more of an ' Arts ' / Humanities Student ? I prefer more of my language subjects and Humanities , but is really uncertain about the other subjects... Especially when i need to take A Maths As A compulsory subjects , along with Science...

I tend to hope that i can word towards the literature study of my language subjects or history... But work wise... Im Really Unsure what i can take.

      :thankyou:
I actually adopt a different viewpoint than most people. Don't pigeonhole yourself into an arts/science person. I think more importantly you should learn how to study well. When you reach university level things are going to be pretty hard- talent can only get you so far.

As a student and tutor myself, let me offer my input. I would recommend taking a more holistic approach and helping your daughter reflect on why she did poorly as opposed to seeing each subject as separate entities and working on them individually. I think developing a practice that will help her study effectively is more fruitful in the long run.

      thanks for your advice.
as this is her first mid year and with frequent tests every other week, i didn't want to push her too much.
i've given her about 2 weeks break from her work. i think it's time to get her brain working.
in fact, i've planned a revision schedule for her since she is on the slow side...son has gone through the history paper with her and pointed out which areas to work on...same for geography. haven't seen math paper yet.

It's great that there's a revision schedule in place. Just curious- did you come up with that on your own or did you have her input too?

Hi everyone. Didn't realize. This group promoted to sec 1.

yup...this batch has finished primary school and moved on to sec 1...it wasn't too long ago when i was thinking which primary school to register her.

this june holidays, have to work on all her subjects. flunked art. history and geography just passed.

    • RE: Good holiday jobs for 16-yr olds

I will actually recommend let your child do those "menial" jobs like warehouse, F&B etc. Looking back, I feel that those jobs really humbled me and made me value my education a lot more, because I know how tough those jobs were. In addition, when your child grows up into a successful individual, he/she will still treat the service staff with respect.

I agree with slmkhoo. You just need to pass MT at D7 to go to local uni. GP is as much content and logical thought as language. If she prefers an academic path and is interested in the sciences and maths, JC should be ok. Just don't go for subjects like Lit, ELL, history...

i m not familiar with JC stuff..meaning in JC we also get to chose the subject combination?

GP and PW are compulsory. Both of these are H1 subjects. MT is compulsory but you would clear this by end J1.

You need to select 4 core subjects, which have to be a combination of Science and Arts subjects. So you can choose to do 3 Science + 1 Arts subject, 2 Sci + 2 Arts, or 3 Arts and 1 Science. These are the most important subjects as they comprise a larger share of the UAS calculations. Your kid's school will brief them on the subject combinations for them to consider at a later date.
I like to also add on that your child can either choose 3H2s + 1 H1 or 4H2s. H2s are considered the \"higher level\" so it is generally encouraged for students to take 4 H2s if they can cope.

    • RE: Meditation for mental health

      Hello,

I actually use this app called Headspace. The first 10 days are free and you get an introduction to meditation, but I find the real value in the premium package. It costs only 100 dollars a year for me, so I find it very worth it. I purchased it recently because I’ve found it so useful.

      Hi Carol,

Is there any way you can provide a photo with better resolution? I tried downloading the photo and it is too pixelated for me to see clearly.
