emerald:
Thanks to atutor2001 & Tang for responding, hope you could help me with the following too:

1) In reported speech, are both 'the previous day'(yesterday) and 'the following day' (tomorrow) acceptable in PSLE or should I use the day before and the next day instead. Teacher said former but assessment books latter. Confused!

2) Reported speech: Jane asked Peter if he (was/were) the one who had taken her book without permission.

3) A list of items takes on a singular verb but why a number of suggestions uses a plural one?

Thanks.
Hi emerald, for Q1, I'll have to go with the teachers! The day before/the next day are, some teachers say, slang.

For Q2, It is was, as you only use were for \"wishful thinking\", as in \"If I were a rich man.\"

For Q3, a list of items only refers to ONE list, so it is singular, as we are only talking about one list. A number of suggestions is not pertaining to the number, but rather, the suggestions, which are plural.

Hope I helped! ๐Ÿ˜„

Dharma:
tianzhu:

Hi Dharma

I am sorry for the silly mistake.

The revised question is as follows:

A and B are 2 different whole numbers, and A is less than B.
Given that A + B = 6 and 5/6 รท A = 1/6 x B
Express AรทB as a fraction.

Best wishes

No worries Tianzhu.

A+B = 6
5/(6A) = B/6
A x B = 5

A= 1 & B =5

A/B = 1/5

Hi Dharma and Tianzhu,
I have a slightly different method, using the first 2 steps of your method, Dharma. This is my method:

A + B = 6
5/(6A) = B/6
30/(6A) = B
5A = B
6A = 6
6/6 = 1 (A)
6 - 1 = 5 (B)
A/B = 1/5

• RE: Q&A - PSLE Math
James Ang picked out several questions from student's schoolwork for parents to try before PSLE;

1. In a classroom, when a boy stands up, the number of boys sitting becomes 4/5 of the number of girls sitting. On the other hand, when a girl stands up, the number of girls sitting becomes 8/7 of the number of boys sitting. How many boys and girls are there in the class?

(Ans: 21 boys and 25 girls)

2. A box containted some twenty-cent coins and some fifty-cent coins in the ratio 3:4. When 26 fifty cent coins were taken out and replaced by the same value of twenty-cents coins, the ratio becomes 4:1. Find the sum of money in the box.

(Ans: $33.80)

3. The masses of copper and zinc in an alloy are in the ratio 2:3. If 12g of zinc is added to the alloy, the total mass of the alloy will become 36g. What is the new ratio of the mass of copper to that of zinc in the alloy?

(Ans: 4:11)
Mr James, is this, by any chance, from the 7 A* Star booklets that the boys are receiving this year for P6?

Q1) 4u+5u = 9u
8u+7u = 15u
LCM of 9 & 15 = 45
8X3 = 24
24+1 = 25 (Girls)
25X4/5 = 20
20+1 = 21 (Boys)

Q2) 26 $0.50 = $13
$13 / $0.20 = 65
$0.20 $0.50
3u : 4u
(+65) (-26)
4u : 1u
16u - 104 = 3u + 65
65 + 104 = 169 which is 13u
169/13 = 13
13 X 3 = 39
39 X $0.20 = $7.80
65 X $0.20 = $13
$7.80 + $13 = $20.80
13 X 4 =52
52 X $0.50 = $26
$26 - $13 = $13
$20.80 + $13 = $33.80

Q3) 36 - 12 = 24
2 + 3 = 5
24 X 2/5 = 9.6 (Copper)
24 - 9.6 = 14.4 (Zinc before adding 12g)
9.6 : 14.4 + 12 = 9.6 : 26.4
= 4 : 11

I believe it may be from the booklets mentioned above, as the questions seem very familiar to me.

ChiefKiasu:
Here's another one, this time from Catholic High Primary 3 SA1:

Gregory and Timothy has 192 stickers together. After Timothy gave 30 stickers to Gregory, Timothy had thrice as many sticker as Gregory. How many stickers did Gregory have at first?

Again... no algebra please.
This is how I would do it:

G : T
1 3

4u is 192

1u is 48

48 - 30 = 18

1)Since the pupils are getting more defiant, the discipline mistress has no choice but to resort to CANE OR CANING them.
Is the answer cane or caning? Why?

2)That girl goes to the same school as _____.
Is it I or me? Why?
Hi Tianzhu,

I think question 1 should be caning, as after \"resort to\" normally a gerund form of the verb is used, in this case, caning.

For question 2, it is I. There is an implied do behind the sentence in this case. So:

That girl goes to the same school as I (do).

A : B+C+D

4u : 5u

4u + 5u = 9u which is 81
81/9 = 9
1 unit = 9

a) 2u= 2X9 = 18
9X9 = 81
18 : 81 = 2 : 9

b) 81 X 4/9 = 36

That's the method I got! ๐Ÿ˜„

Hi small,

Let me try to solve both of your earlier problems.

Q1a) 1/3 X 2/5 = 2/15 which is $10 cash cards sold (sets).
1/3 - 2/15 = 1/5 (3/15) which is amount of $15 cards sold (sets).

($10X2) + ($15X3) = $65

$3900 divided by $65 = 60 (amount of sets)

60 X 3 =180

Q1b) 2/3 = 10/15

60X10 = 600.

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8171/scan1n.jpg\">

Q2) 40/2 = 20

40 X 20 X 1/2 = 400

1/2 X 3.14 X 20 X 20 = 628

628 - 400 = 228

628 X 2 = 1256

1256 - 228 = 1028

1/4 X 3.14 X 40 X 40 = 1256

1256 - 1028 = 228

228 + 228 = 456

Hope I'm right! ๐Ÿ˜„

How to show that the sum of all angles is equal to 360 degrees?
Q35 RGPS SA2 2007

http://www.wendykoh.com/07/primary6-rgs-maths.pdf

Partial c + d + f = 180 degree (triangle)

The other portion of c + b + a + e = 180 degree (triangle, External angle of a triangle = 2 internal opposite angles = a + e)

So all angles add up to 360 degree.

• RE: Q&A - PSLE Math

Hi alamak, let me (try to) solve your question:

Dist = SAME

Every 1 hour, the coach travelled 1/5 of the distance, so in 1/2 an hour, the coach would travel 1/10 of the distance. When the coach had 9/10 of the distance left, the car started from Town A. In every 1 hour, the car would travel 1/4 of the distance. So in 4 hours, the coach would have travelled 4/5 more, and 1/10 + 4/5 is 9/10. o the car reached when it had 1/10 of its distance left, which it would be able to travel in 1/2 an hour, so the car's total time, 4 hours, minus the 1/2 hour, equals 7/2 hours or 3 and a half hours. So, with a timeline, 6.48 + 3 1/2 hours equals 9.18 am, or in 24 hour time 0918.

Hope my working and answer is right! ๐Ÿ˜„
