RE: Nanyang Primary
KittyBin:
My DD is due for P1 registration for P1 next Jun/July. She is born in 2005. From reading the discussions, can I conclude & ask the following:
1. Registration deadline is not yet closed for my DD. However, if the school has taken and accepted enough parents for PV for that year(due for P1 in 2012), all applications will be futile?
2. Even if they still take in applications, if at the point of applying for PV, you stay outside of 2 km, your chance of getting selected for interview is slim, and as good as none? Unless, you indicate your intention to move within 1 km before registration?
3. How does NYPS choose their PV applicants? They handpicked through resumes and NOT through balloting? I know some schools ballot as the no. of applications exceed the no. of places available to do PV.
4. What other schools handpicked their PV?
Thanks for enlightening me : ))
Hi! I do not know how NYPS chooses its PVs (not via balloting thou) but I don't think distance plays a part. I live more than 2km from the school and was accepted as a PV. My advice is to go ahead and put in your application and wish for the best!! Best of luck

RE: Nanyang Primary
I feel the same way as you. The session for my DSโs class was scheduled for this morning at 1015 and I found out about this only at 1100!! I wonder why parents were not informed earlierโฆ

RE: Yamaha Special Junior Advanced Course - Discussion
Hi radiantmum,
Congratulations to your child!!
JSAC 1st year has been...... Interesting
I think my son has picked up quite a bit from the 10 months he's been in the class (he and a few others joined an existing class that started 3 mths earlier). The course is quite demanding.... the songs are not easy to play and therefore requires quite a bit of practice, which of course my son doesn't do!! However he enjoys the lessons which I guess is a good thing. He's just started on his composition piece so that's quite exciting for all of us
No, JSAC doesn't require the children to take the ABRSM. Only the Yamaha exams are compulsory. That's why I'm in a fix as to whether to do ABRSM as well. Oh well....
I hear that Year 2 is going get tougher... :!: But you don't have to worry about that yet.... enjoy Year 1 first  -
RE: Yamaha Special Junior Advanced Course - Discussion
Hi there....
Looking for some advice... My son is just about completing year 1 of the JSAC course. He has just completed the Yamaha Grade 9 exam. Any of your kids taking both the Yamaha and ABRSM exams? Not sure if I should get my son to do the ABRSM exams too.... Anybody know the standards of the two exams? Are they about on par? Can I assume that if he can do well in the Yamaha exam, that he should be ablel to do well in the ABRSM exam too??
Tks in advance

RE: Pat's Schoolhouse
DS is doing well and enjoying P1... I think Pat's did prepare them quite well for P1. Re Chinese... If I remember correctly, they are introduced to Han Yu Pin Yin sometime during their K2 year as an introduction to what they'll learn in P1. They have Ting Xie too. My kids do not come from a chinese speaking home but thankfully, they are not averse to the language and infact they enjoy it quite a bit! I think this can be attributed to the school and the way they teach the language.
As for English/Math, aside for the regular spelling, they are taught Time and Money sometime during K2. Last year, sometime in November, the school engaged someone to come in and simulate \"Going to Primary One\" with the K2's.... They were introduced to the various aspects of P1, eg. classroom setting, going to recess etc.
I can't say if Pat's prepared my son very well for P1 cos I'm sure there are other schools out there that do more than Pats  On the other hand, I know that my son didn't have any real problems when he started P1 so I guess Pat's much have done something!! On the whole, I think education at Pat's is well-rounded and holistic, academics weaved in very well with play!!
I'm my kids school bus so sorry... can't help you with the cost of school bus fares
Hope all this is useful....
cheers

RE: All About Kids' Eye-sight
MLR:
Hi MLR,Hiya precious3, I think that your boy got into the habit of rubbing his eyes was becos he couldn't see well due to his astig. I hv quite severe astig, and it would be best describe as blur vision, not like you can't see as in myopia, but jus can see sharply enough, so the tendency to rub your eyes to \"see\" clearer.
Modern kids/adults are constanly engaging in short distance eye straining activities like between homework, with their PSP/computer/handphone/tv, etc. Which is luminated background and very fast speed movements which causes eye fatigue and often when engaged in such activities, your eyes don't blink which is its natural way of rest.
Avoid long period of short distance work (like reading, homework, computer, tv, etc) Got to rest the eyes preferably every 30 mins when engaging in such activities. By resting, a simple eye shut for 10 mins is good enough, as I do understand that its not possible to rest too long when doing homework, or else cannot complete in time....
Tks for the tip! I've asked my DS why he rubs his eyes and he says its because they are itchy.... could also be because of the lack of blinking like you mentioned. The optometrist told me to get him some eye drops to see if it will help.... Will have to give that a try! -

Yes, was told this by the optometrist we saw at the SHC as well as the one at the optical shop....
did the optometrist confirm on this?precious3:
Hi all,
Apparently excessive eye rubbing can affect the degree of the astigmatism.
