Hi I’m also considering for my daughter and I have exactly the same sentiments from all who are sharing about AES. The student guide was from PeiHwa and impressed me with her confidence, compared to another student guide from another school openhouse that we went to. Every feedback was about the school has gangsters etc, why this perception it is sad to hear that. It is a mission school, how bad can it be! The school has such nice environment like an independent school which I really like. The rest is about self discipline n self motivation.

There’s a reason why “analysts” would prefer to look at median t-score instead of range of students’ t-scores or COP. You can get the info from MOE’s SIS.

As an example, you can look at Whitley for an example of a wide range of t-scores: 188 to 251 and Punggol as an example of a narrow range: 201 to 233.
Median of Whitley is 207 while Punggol median is 205.
If both schools are of a similar size, Whitley may actually have a stronger cohort despite having a much lower COP.

You can also contrast the above with Guangyang Sec, another school with a wide range of t-score: 188 to 251. Median is 203. If schools are of a similar size, Guangyang’s cohort could be the weakest of the lot, despite having a similar range as Whitley.

The reasons for the above are varied but location, familiarity seems to be a big factor.

In simple terms, median is the midpoint of the cohort. Eg in Whitley’s case, 50% of the cohort scores better than 207 (207 to 251) while 50% scores less than that (188 to 207).

There’s no better or worst, or higher means better. It all depends on what you are looking for. For example, if a school has a range of 205 to 225 but median 207, it means the cohort strength is fairly equal (whereas in Whitley’s case, the better or even average students are quite far apart from their weakest).[/quote]This is very useful! My girl cried when walked up to me with her results. A second before she burst out I thought she was playing a fool as she was hardly serious about result. So heartbroken. This scene keeps etching in my mind. Think school prelim gave her confidence but didn’t expect psle to be worse. My two kids both did better in school than psle, that made me wonder why. Even their consistent A subject becomes B.

It is not that we dont want to choose. I believe there are people like me off 2 points but the school dont want us. Maybe u re right precisely a few dont meet or not bold to choose wont cause the effect while many who meet the cop choose the school raise or maintain the COP.

Sometimes I cant help but wonder why some schools die die follow the previous year COP. My son took his psle in 2017, his score was 2 points off a school he wanted but could not get in. Some schools also remain their COP for quite long, that does not seem to be realistic. Not sure accurate or not.
