there's been a proliferation of cheap children desks and chairs on the market. many comes with an extremely attractive price tag but quality can be questionable and the toxicity of the materials is always a concern.


better stick with reliable products, especially if you don't want a buy-and-to-throw-away product.

quite a few shops closed down recently including kinderfun in united square, jarrons in city square, and scool in marina square. kidz n teenz also closed down.

only ergokid and ergoworks are still around. ergokid sells premium german desks and chairs. i don't think you can find such quality in the chinese products. ergoworks have affordable packages but they're made in china, which means quality will be an issue especially after a while.

Hey quixation, thanks so much for sharing your homework. Some feedback if it helps to refine it. Are these the published weights or you got to weigh the bags? I would think the spi bag should be well at least 1100g because the fabric material is so thick especially the canvas. The Buddy is also quite heavy, probably at around 1200 or 1300g, and apparently it's not suited for P1 students... more targeted for P4-P6

I think maybe too much focus is placed on the weights of the bag itself. More importantly it should be the overall weight of the bag when loaded with the books and water bottle etc. If you have back posture problems, then maybe some emphasis on the back support and carry system should carry more importance. Ironically, the lightest bag is a simple Nike bag or a plastic bag with no support and minimal cushion, but will make you walk like a turtle. In this respect, bags such as the ergobag, BAM, DrKong, Buddy, Deuter Smart (not the Genius), and Satch should be worth looking into as they have internal frames inside, some simple and others as sophisticated as the ones found in hiking bags.

Warranty is another issue. Which bags carry warranty?

I must add that I am totally appalled at the ergoworks product that I bought from them!


The sales person who sold me the table and chair bundle insisted that he had told me the chair, which is covered in synthetic leather would peel after some time!!!

I totally had no recollection of that statement. if not, i would not have made that purchase... the whole family was there and knowing my hubby, he would have also discouraged the buy if he had heard that the chair would peel!

I called the showroom asking what happened to the chair...and they said it was 'normal' for synthetic leather to peel after some time. I may sound stupid but this was NOT made clear to us that the quality would be so bad...

The chair was clearly not misused, or put under direct sunlight or exposed to any form of cold temperature. the chair, in fact, was kept nicely in a cool temperature room, away from extreme weather conditions whatsoever. the kids would use it occasionally when they needed to do their work and with our supervision.

That chair was a problem other than just the leather itself...had to call the company to ask them down for checks not too long after purchase as well.

Now with the peeling synthetic leather, the clothes get stuck on with those remains of the peels and it drops all over the floor too...then on top of the peels, the white portion underneath is somehow powdery. So kids' clothes especially dark ones get stained white too.

To top it off, the upholstery is not cheap. Just to change it to fabric and including installation, it costs a whooping $290 as quoted by sales person!! the chair costs $690 now... that is like...half price of a new chair and their fabric is soooo expensive!!

They insisted that there was nothing they could do except to ask me to pay for upholstery to get it solved... the most upsetting thing is that, is I had known or been told that quality would be so lousy, i would not have bought!

So when you guys buy from them, think twice, thrice about quality...

I suppose you're not the only one with this unpleasant experience with Ergoworks...

Hi, I think I understand your concern. My dd is also petite in size, so I got her a very light school bag, a small water bottle and a very thin story book (for quiet reading purpose). During 1st year, most of the school textbooks and exercise books are given to her class teacher before the school term start. Ayah don't just go for the lightest school bag, otherwise you'll end up with a plastic bag from Giant. Anyway the difference between the lightest and heaviest bags in the market is about 300g, so it's more important to look at the designs of the bags. Some bags are pure branding exercise. Have you considered the German ergobags http://www.ergobag.de. They're worth looking as they use the same designs of high performance hiking backpacks, with internal lightweight aluminum frames. Don't go for the bags with thick paddings, they're useless.

trade-in offers are just a marketing gimmicks...


anyway, SPI is a chinese product and available on Alibaba.com... maybe all the kiasus we can band together and buy one container... $5 a bag. Walao... imagine the profit margins of kinderfun... Is this SPI bag really worth it?

kid2youth has a wide range of school bags... ergobag, derdiedas, deuter, dr kong, and totem. i like the totem as it's very affordable with starting price at $89 with 2 yr warranty some more. it has a welded base which means that it can withstand wear and tear and can sit on the floor without toppling, unlike some other popular brands.

Have you tried Satch available with ergokid in Wheelock or Kid2youth in Suntec City? The Satch is a German bag and comes with a frame to distribute weight load and protect the back.
