Thks for your insights. This is because at the back of my mind I have a ‘wishful’ thinking that maybe this year as most parents want to play safe and avoid the stress, majority will go for those ‘non balloted’ schools. And this year will become a ‘miracle’ in whole of statistics history.
But looks like most people’s mentality will not changed.

RE: 2018 P1 registration exercise for 2019 intake
Hi parents, as this year registration is dragon year, may I know your opinion, will there be much changes/sudden surprises this year compared to the past year's statistics? Will the 12years ago dragon year statistics be relevant for this year?
Do u think that we can rely on the past year forecast to make a decision for this year registration?
(still not 100% sure what to expect) -

NardNegoy:
Hi Lexy, thanks for sharing your thoughts, especially on the risk appetite for balloting. My wife and I will be staying within 1km of the 2B school, to give ourselves as best a chance as possible (I understand our odds will be higher in 2C too if we live within 1km). I was just unsure on the steps to take in terms of securing one school in 2A first before giving it up for another in 2B, etc, since it's my first time. So from what I've heard, the steps seem to be:
NardNegoy - does the school in 2B require balloting every year? how far away are you from that school?Lexy:
Hi everyone,
My wife and I hope to send our daughter to a popular school in phase 2B (parent volunteer), with my wife's former primary school as a back up in phase 2A. What would be the best strategy to adopt during the registration exercise? Are we allowed to apply in phase 2A, and then subsequently in phase 2B, so that we drop my wife's primary school in 2A to move to the school in 2B? How does that work, and what steps should we take?
Or are we allowed to only apply and secure a place in one phase?
New to this, appreciate any help. Thanks!
You are allowed to apply for 1 school at one time, meaning if you decided to withdraw from 2A school, you would have given up the place.
Question for you is whether you will still withdraw from the 2A school if it require balloting at 2B and what is your risk threshold for balloting if that occur? say 1.5 applicants is to 1 spot? or 2 is to 1 spot? Or you want to secure a place without balloting?
1) Apply in 2A, secure wife's school.
2) Enquire on the very last day of phase 2B at the preferred school on the numbers.
3) Based on the enquiry, if we're applying at preferred school, get wife to give up 2A place in wife's school and immediately apply for 2B place in preferred school on same day.
Could someone advise me if I got the sequence of events correct? Also, are schools generally forthcoming on the numbers applying per phase, and other stats? Like, is the info easily available? I'm asking with regards to step 2) above.
Thank you every one who helped clear things up, I'm sure many others have the same question as me on their minds, and I appreciate the replies. Cheers! :)
My case is similar like yours, but opposite in a way that i am looking at going for phase 1 popular school 1st, then phase 2C neighbourhood sch (also need balloting in certain years), because we moved house.
More anxious for next yr as we should not take dragon yr lightly.
I did hear from colleague that even doing PV has it's strategy. When u r reporting for PV, try to show your face frequently to the P, VP or heavy weights HODs, so that they know who u r. He even bought pastries & cakes for the admins in the general office. During 2B, he gotten balloted out but someone actually withdrew and he got in eventually. Was it due to the sch returning the favour? Nobody knows. As long as he gotten the place it is all that matters. -

Orb:
As Chief said, there are other ways to get your child into your school of choice. Put on wait list and hope that the school calls you OR do well in a primary school and seek transfer at end of P1/P2.
For those who failed in balloting, fret not, it is not the end. The strategy in Phase 2C(S) is to avoid balloting as much as possible. On a side note, there are still many schools with secondary affiliation in 2C(S) for your consideration. All the best!
Years ago my relative staying near kallang transferred her child from a neighbourhood school to a popular school there at that area. She donated a 5 digit sum of money (rich indonesian chinese) to the popular school and her child gotten transferred in successfully in P2. I was so mad and felt unfair. The popular school at kallang was relocating to a holding location then and they needed funds to build the extension building (govt aided sch, govt pay most but sch still has to cough out certain % for building).
Apparently like what Chief mentioned there is no transparency currently in the transfer process!
So fortune still favours the rich in this society. Their children have a better start in life with advantage in good environment and being labeled in a branded school helps them to get into the elite circles.
Any idea this year if any Minister registered their children in a neighbourhood sch instead of Nanyang pri? LOL -

Who knows maybe the mindset and strategies of the parents will change next year after analysing this year's outcome. To play safe, maybe all or most will consider the not so popular schools. Then the usually hot ones suddenly plenty of vacancies. LOL..tinywings:
This year the outcome is ridiculous! So many schools within 1km need to ballot. How much more next year the Dragon year???!
Add buffer to your odds and see whether it's still good. If not, exercise plan B to go to the 2nd preferred school if any.

RE: 2018 P1 registration exercise for 2019 intake
What will u do if u r in my shoes?
In dragon yr, to register my child in a SAP school in phase 1, need to travel 45mins by school bus. Elder child will be AM session, dragon child PM session (silbings lesser time to bond).
OR…
to register in a neighbourhood school in phase 2C (cannot predict the statistics for next yr, comparing the statistics in kiasuparent site 6 out of 12 yrs need to ballot), but the traveling time is only 15mins. Both elder and dragon child AM session, logistics more convenient.
Dragon child does not dislike Chinese, the Mandarin standard is average. -

zac's mum:
I have 2 neighbours at my blk who rented out their HDB flats to foreigners. Then they rented a condo who is within 1km of their choice sch. Both moved out to the condos during June holidays to prepare for this coming p1 registration. They shared that now Condo rental is very cheap due to the over supply of rental flats in the market now.BigMomma:
I know that rental needs at least 30 months but how about resale? Need to show proof of property purchase or just the IC address would be fine?
I don't really understand your qn. The 30 months is after, not before. In most circumstances you just show your IC address.
For uncompleted (new) property, you can show Proof of purchase, with some restrictive timelines. See here for more details:
https://www.moe.gov.sg/admissions/primary-one-registration/required-documents-for-primary-one-registration-exercise#resale
Kinda unfair but it is a real fact of life. As long as u have $ and does not mind the hassle of moving, anyone can do it to get into your choice sch. Of coz your hdb flat most alr be 5yrs MOP and your homework make sure that the past statistics with 1km of your rental apartment do not need to ballot for SC. -

mumenetan:
Glad to read that we are in similar boat. But for my case, the phase 2C sch is >2km. But so much nearer to new place. My phase 1 sch is a SAP school btw. But like u, I headache over the logistics.i guess the school in phrase2C could be SAP or more convenient /closer to their home.
For my case, i m also gg to register my boy for Phrase2A first and monitor the school we wanted in PHRASE 2c. The phrase 2A school is abit far from my place and not convenient to get there. We just standby in case if really cannot get a seat at all in Phrase 2c school, we wil stay put and had to rack brain over the logistics. .
What about yours? If yours is within 1km and not a \"branded\" sch then should be confident to get it, if u withdraw from phase 2A. Will u be hovering in the phase 2C school on the last day to find out the registeration numbers and applicants distance? Let's us all think of a strategy. -

What are some reasons why \"people pantang dragon girl\"?zac's mum:
Ah, but did you know that people who pantang and don't want Dragon girl, they will either abstain, or use \"special techniques\" to get a boy instead? All hearsay. And all guesswork on my part.
Ladies, I gotten the data. The answer is...... 2012 dragon year has more girls then boys. This is a factor to analyse for those aiming for girl's school.
