Thanks 'ksks' for your thoughtful reply. I still feel that the teachers should not let the students use the handphone inside the classroom. That is my regret for not checking up DHS school policy on mobile usage before admitting my daughter there.

Can understand your concerns. I understand now generally there are a lot of communications for sec students with via emails, WhatsApp, or some apps that teacher uses. If there is need for mobile phone use, you can consider setting up parental controls so you can monitor your child’s usage until you feel comfortable your child is using it responsibly.
Dear parents,

My boy has completed his PSLE in 2019 and now his year1 in IP track @ CHS.
I'm glad that the stressful year is over with more challenges coming up.

Would share our experience in DSA with parents here.

We applied for DSA via Mathematics domain for my son (3 schools : HCI, RI & CHS).
He got straight rejected by HCI cos he doesn't go for any Olympiad competitions.
He got shortlisted by RI & CHS. Went for both tests and interviews.
He decided and choose CHS as he prefers the culture there (he does HMT in his primary school).

Please feel free to ask me for the DSA related questions and I will try to advise.
As I am not very active here, so if I didn't reply to you, you may PM me.

Cheers

May I ask what is the commitment required for your boy when DSA via Math domain? What is the requirement when your child apply for DSA last year? Thanks!

Hi Tookies,

Till today, I have not seen the timetable as they are still involved in orientation and was in school overnight camp last night. As in the orientation schedule, today will be their class allocation and receiving of their time table. I will check tonight.

I applied for my son via academic, math domain.
Based on his school SA results, and he also need to take paper tests and interviews.
His school results for Math is consistent between 95-99. And other subjects are 88-95 range.
For my son, he doesn't go for any Olympiad as his primary school is not active in engaging or training/send the students for this. We also never train him in this.
As he also takes HMT and been achieving Merit, hence he is more keen in going to SAP school. In this case, he chooses CHS.

For test, questions asked were more of secondary level and Olympiad math.

For interviews, they were given an article to read (the topic is related to social issues). Questions were asked on their view and how they would handle or work on the social problems. Also, were asked some of these basic questions :
1. Which school did you applied for DSA?
2. Why did you choose our school?
3. What do you think of out school?
4. How would you make your final decision on accepting the offers from schools?

I would think the interviewers look at how the child present, speak and express during the interview.

My boy did his own research online on body languages and presentation skills. This really help a lot.
Also, make sure during interview, speak loud and clear. Do not mumble.

Hope the above helps.
Thank you very much!

Hi 2020p6,

Format wise, 2017 onwards is of relevance.

Regarding change of syllabus, the main sections affected are the first 2 sections, i.e. 语文应用MCQ and 短文填空 Cloze Passage. Thus, these 2 sections can be \"skipped\". However, Q9, 10, 11 and 12 are actually not directly affected by syllabus text, since they are testing on 连接词 (conjunctions) and 完成句子. So, they can still be used for practice.

I am wondering the same for CL n higher CL. Guess for higher CL still can use 2019 p6 test papers for comprehension practices.

Yes, HCL can use 2017-2019 schools past year HCL exam paper for compre practice (first 2 sections are related to syllabus text so can skip).

2017 was change in exam format 🙂 , whereas change in syllabus was progressively:
2015 - Pri 1
2016 - Pri 2
2017 - Pri 3
2018 - Pri 4
2019 - Pri 5 (thus 2019's Pri 5 used different Pri 5 text books compared to 2019's Pri 6)
2020 - Pri 6 (2020's Pri 6 will be first batch using the new syllabus' Pri 6 text books)

New syllabus vs. Old syllabus

Those born in and after 2008 are impacted by the new Chinese Syllabus. Be careful if you are buying 2nd hand books from Carousell. Those born in 2009, you can buy from 2008 batch but 2008 children, they are the first batch taking new syllabus Chinese. I found Popular bookstores are still selling phased out assessment books which should have been recalled. Please check \"printed date\" before buying. Normally the new chinese assessment books will only be available in end Jan/ Feb next year.

• RE: 2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)

From what I understood, there is actually no cut-off point to meet in order to admit into sec school. The COP or the range is only a reference of the score of prior year students who were admitted into that school. It only reflects the prior year’s students choice of school.

Students are posted based on merit which means vacancies are filled up by students with higher scores first according to their choices. If the school is a popular school among high scorers, it gets filled up fast by high scorers which means lower scores students doesn’t get their chance to get admitted because no more vacancies, not because student doesn’t meet the cut off point.

Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Cheers!

may I ask about coping with HCL in NUS high? Since the school is not focused in chinese, are there students taking HCL and if they are able to cope for without tuition, esp when they have no time for tuition anyway?

Thanks in advance!

I understand more than half of the Chinese cohort are taking HCL.
It is possible to switch to normal CL if one cannot cope after 1 or 2 years.
The students at NUSH are not so concerned about MT subject because they can choose not to include it in their diploma grade points.
Yet I think most of them are doing generally well in MT.
My DS had HCL tuition once a week.

Thank you for the info!

Dear parents, do you have any recommendations for model CL composition books that I can buy for my child. He is very weak in CL Compo.
