I have been an avid reader of ur thread since I joined KSP forum, but didn't contribute as I'm as new to phonics as my 4yo son who attends pcf. in the 70s, the term 'phonics' was unheard of, but I think we still learn pronunciation of words similarly

I hate flashcards and use traditional reading methods which I enjoy bonding with my children. recently, I bought 2 books 'bat's hats' http://brainytots.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Board_Book#134 & 'bug's mug' http://brainytots.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Board_Book#135
for them. the turning wheel seems like a good idea, although the board books are rather thin. my son actually asked me, 'mummy, only 4 pages ah??'

an idea came to mind. I was thinking of adopting the same idea of a turning wheel and DIY using a paper plates. anyone tried similar 'craft' or teaching materials? any other phonics books to share?

I’ve also started to expose my kids on arts & craft eg. finger painting, fruit stamping. but can’t stand the mess they make after the session. any good ‘cleaner’ suggestions?

reminds me of a song we sung in pri school. the lyrics go like ‘it’s only half-past-three’. I think as kids, we learnt alot of concepts from songs

I think it involves a little bit of maths concept. eg. 一个字=5mins


I dun really ‘teach’ him to read time, but weave it into daily life naturally, esp when it is something he likes, eg. watching his favourite cartoon. tell him this cartoon starts at certain time (sometimes I purposely say wrongly for him to correct me)

another way is to buy a digital clock/ watch so that he can read the digital time against the analogue time…

yes, I think I'm fitting into the kiasu parent profile as I have already shortlisted a few pri schools for my 4yo. then my girl can just enter pri school via sibling priority scheme (or what is the proper term?)


beside the academic part, I really think children nowadays lack manners and social skills. I'm trying to brush up my children in these areas as I think they will benefit in life rather than doing assessment books and 10-yr-series.

had alot of resistance b4 finally joining this formum as I didn't want to admit I'm 'kiasu'. but after browsing through, I found this forum informative & resourceful when I was searching for ideas for my kids.

btw, I'm a FTWM of 2, with a 4yo son in nursery & a 21mo gal bumping around at home.
