RE: Club 2002 Kids
Hi - wow I didn't realise there were many parents with 2002 kids !
Mummy's name : working mom
DD1 : eldest
This year big drop in SA1 result for languages, especially Chinese
Can I ask if it is normal for Kids at P3 to experience moodiness, lack of motivation, sulking ? Last year DD1 was fine, quite motivated, this year distracted, moody, not keen on doing work ...sigh...I know a few moms who told me this is quite normal going into pre-teens...esp for girls. -
RE: Nan Chiau Primary

RE: All About Competitive Swimming
sammifan:
She is doing ok, gone for a couple of competitions and is improving her personal best every 2-3 months. She swims around 3 times a week regularly, more just 2 - 3 weeks before a meet and maybe once/twice 2-3 weeks before and none during exams. I think this is about as much as we can handle. Of course now is school holidays but we haven't really made her swim a lot more as she has other activities and has to catch up on her piano as well. We are still of the view that her studies is more important and cannot take a back-seat to the training.twilight:
There's a club that trains in Singapore Sports School. Not north east, but north.
I think the club is known as Speedi Swim.
BTW Workingmom, how is your daughter taking to the competitive training and how often is she training? There is a lot of pressure to send the kids down for very very regular training like 5-6 times a week, but as parents we will need to moderate the frequency and ensure they lead a balanced life.
My 2 DDs are in competitive swimming and my elder daughter did not swim more than 4 times a week in Primary school. I believe they have to lead a balanced life. My younger daughter is in P4 this year and she swims an average of 3 times a week.
Good Luck!
I think the pressure is to get better faster and I suppose the only way is to train more often ! When she just started training for the initial few months, no real pressure, just slowly getting up to speed with the rest as her peers all started well before her. Being keen to train was good enough for us. Now that she has improved a lot more and can swim more strokes there is a push to want to do well enough in her club to get a chance to represent the club in meets. I think all swimmer parents can identify with this dilemna ! My hubby wants to look long term though as he swam when he was a kid, did really well in Pri school, over trained resulting in him retiring from competition in Sec 2 as he was jaded and tired. Overtraining affected his performance and he could not improve much further.
The sport is really competitive though ! Other clubs are rather good nowadays and I heard they do strength and endurance training during land ex for the very young ones (p2s and below) - it gets results by our club's coaches dont recommend it for very young kids. -
RE: How much do you spend on the kids' tuition/enrichments?
Piano $170
Violin $140
Chinese enrichment $180
Swimming $120
Resuming kumon math $120
DD going to P3 - maybe adding on extra tuition if too tired to teach myself. -
RE: Self tutor or Outsource??
This is a timely discussion as I have been revising with my P2 girl Eng/Math/Chinese for her year end exam and seriously thinking of outsourcing. Currently she goes for Chinese enrichment once a week so rest of the time I try to help her as much as I can even though I am working full time.
It's very tiring and I think this translates in me being quite impatient and annoyed with her at times when she is distracted and not focused. She is a bright girl but she tends to be careless in her work and doesn't read the questions properly. So always losing precious marks for her tests.
I feel that outsourcing to tutors may be the key to preserving the parent-child relationship - realised that there is increasing tension between us especially near exam time. Also, being full time working mum is just too tiring la - the 2-3 hrs that I am with my kids daily should not be spent just on revising work alone. Once I get home its rush rush rush .... cause they have to go to bed pretty early (morning session).
And I have a hubby who is happy to just leave all the work to me ... only stepping in when :?: or when he sees I am at wits end

RE: Peugeot 307 convertible or Mercedes coupe
Our family got a volvo C70 last year - our 2 kids love it. It’s our 1st convertible - and looks like it won’t be our last. Makes sense to buy 2nd hand … the depreciation is very high for such cars. Next car ? We are eyeing the A5 cabrio or the new C70 … but not for a while … prices are steep at the moment.

Balancing Schoolwork & Competitive Sports
As a parent of lower primary kids who have just started training, I have wondered how kids cope with the rigors of training and schoolwork. I know time management is required but still it means a lot less time for revision, assessment practice etc..... there seems to be a compromise here. My kids are not complaining that they hardly get to watch tv though...strange....
During my time, schoolwork was a lot less demanding so I can imagine it was easier...so if your kids participate in competitive sports how do they manage their time ? Please share ! Thanks !
