English is a compulsory subject for all, so DS still get to write GP stuff.

      CatMoon,

SMTP (Science & Mathematics Talent Programme) is part of the four special programmes for CSE (Centre for Scholastic Excellence). The bulk of students will choose to remain in IP for Sec 3 /4. Promotion criteria for CSE is MSG below 2 for all programmes. For SMTP, A1 for Eng, Math and Science based on Sec 2 year end results are required. For BSP, A1 for Eng and Chinese. Humanities Programme (HP) A1 for Eng, Geog/History. Among all the special programmes, HP is the most hard core and demanding one. I think there is only one class this year. I know HCI is well recognised for her humanities programme. All CSE students must engage in a year-long research project of their chosen programme with the guidance of expert mentors. The students undergo expanded curriculum as compared to IP. Opting for CSE should be guided by personal interest and passion in the selected field of study. I have known some very bright students with stellar Sec 2 results and they chose to remain in IP because the nature of the curriculum suits them better.

Agree with you, mommylow. Passion and interest are very impt. My DS did qualify for CSE, but he thinks that he does not have strong passion on the prog under CSE, thus he choose to stay in IP. With the \"extra\" time given , he can participate for more activities in school and gain other exposure.

      Miracle Child:
Hi, can I find out a bit more about CCAs and the commitment level.

Is there such a concept (like RI's case) whereby only sports and aesthetics are considered core sports and the rest of the CCAs are non-core, and all students must have at least 1 core CCA?

What level of time commitment is required for CCA in HCI? On average, is it 2 or 3 times a week?

      Thanks.
      Hi Miracle Child,

If I'm not wrong, there is no core or non core in HCI. My DS is in Uniform grp and he only has 1 CCA. Most of his friends also only have one. CCA training is depending on the respective CCA. For him, it is twice per week. Now he's in sec 3, it is reduced to once per week. I know track and field training is daily.

:congrats: to all the Hwachongians who received their A-level results yesterday!

Dr Hon congratulated the seniors and encouraged the juniors! My boy was so motivated - he said there were lots of clapping and rah-rah! :rahrah:

Dr Hon's message on the website -

\"The Class of 2014 has continued Hwa Chong’s tradition of excellence.
They achieved a median University Admission Point (UAP) of 86.63 out of 90. In other words, the average Hwa Chong student has attained 3 distinctions and 1 B for all of their H2 subjects, making them eligible for admission to any top universities locally and overseas.
For the Academic Year 2014, 722 offers were made by prestigious overseas universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Penn, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke and Chicago to Hwa Chong students in 2014.\"
Well done Hwa Chong boys and girls! :congrats:

CatMoon, my DS said they clap and rah rah for the early dismissal that they looking forward too. πŸ•Ί :rotflmao:

Sabbaticals are held on Week 10 of the school term not during the hols, so the boys study for 9 weeks, and get to do fun stuff on week 10! I think they look forward to sabbaticals!

the boys will get used to checking EMB - it's one of HCI's ways of teaching them to be independent and responsible for their own learning. They will learn to check the various wiki's, IVLEs etc soon enough.

      hope he's enjoying school otherwise!
Agree with lexis. Emb is now part and parcel of their life. Lol

      BP2013:

After a week of HCI experience, my DS seems to enjoy his new school πŸ˜“ I just hope he will continue to keep up the zest and well spent his next 6 years :imanangel:

Let's stay positive since he has a good start. However, as parents, just be mentally prepared that good start does not guarantee a smooth 6 years for majority of the students. Just be there when they need us. Do not try to put the cart in front of the bull and make decision on their behalf. Try to also speak to them to understand what they really want rather than imposing our dreams upon them. Count not the many downs but celebrate the many positive changes we will see in our boy over the course of the few years ahead. This I am confident. Have fun everyone.

BTW, I am a dad...not mum. That may be mean that \"I am the man\" πŸ™‚

      Imconcern, :udaman:

Totally agree with Imconcern on \"do not try making decision on their behalf and imposing our dream upon them\". My DS is in Sec 3 now. There are Special Program in Sec 3. While in Sec 2, heard DS mentioning that many of his friends do not wish to go SP but their parents are forcing them to do so. The boys were planning to do \"not so well\" in final papers in order not to qualify for SP. This was very sad. They are big boys. Let them decide. If we do not like our parents decide for us when we were young, likewise, they do not like too. Let them have fun and enjoy school life.
