Hi, I am oso thalassemic and was told by gynae/doc many years ago that we are not suitable to take iron supplements bcos it will induce e haemoglobin to break prematurely, causing e level to be even lower. Erm, did ur doc know u r thalassemic before prescribing iron supplements for u? Or is it alright to take actually?
I eat very little fish. Dun really like them. Am taking krill oil supplement - finishing one bottle soon.Sun_2010:
Got my medical checkup results this morning.
As suspected, my iron level is out of the lowest range. Doctor prescribed iron supplements to be taken every other night.
PS: I have read that Calcium inhibits iron absorption . Google it a bit and check with your doctor.
I checked that out for DD who was aneamic.
I hv thalassemia which accounts for the low iron level. Did not know calcium and iron are not friends
many thanks for the info. will follow up with the gynae next week.
I think I could do better for my HDL and LDL - more exercises

I remember I read about your boy is having peeling skin on his palms?
I had that too when I was 11yo, I could peel a \"sheet\" of 3sqcm skin of my palms if I do it carefully, lol, I would always deliberately, slowly peel it just to show to my classmates.
When my school principal found out, he told me that that's due to iron deficiency, and he wrote a note asked me to hand to my mother.... Back then we didn't have iron supplement easily available, so my mum boil the pig liver soup for me every other day for dinner, sometimes she made pig liver porridge, and my peeling stopped after 4 months. (Those days people were used to consuming livers in large quantity, not deterred by the cholesterol and all that.)
Not sure if this helps...
Hope you find a way to stop the peeling. Regards. -
Jennifer:
:celebrate: To your good health.Got my medical checkup results this morning.
Total Cholesterol 154
HDL 54
LDL 91
Triglycerides 44
All other indices are in good range, esp. surprised to know my calcium level is 9.4 (reference range 8.4 to 10.4)
As suspected, my iron level is out of the lowest range. Doctor prescribed iron supplements to be taken every other night.
Next week to see a gynae. :xedfingers:
Cannot run from obsessing about results. Last time obsess about our own results then obsess about our kids' results and as time passes, obsess about health check results.

I brou up the topic ytd to him to do a blood test, in particular to check whether he is also a thalassemia. He agreed, so we will know soon. -

Hi Jennifer, yes better check. I remember the doc taking a test to rule out thalassemic for DD before giving her the iron supplements.

Hi all!
I need advise!
I went for a 30 mins morning walk.
I did a medical check-up on 30/11/2011.
Cholesterol 6.21mmol/L desirable <5.2
Triglycerides 1.05mmol/L desirable <1.7
HDL 1.02mmol/L desirable 1.0-1.5
LDL 4.88mmol/L desirable 2.6-3.3
I know I was ignorant. Its one and a half a year already.Don't scold me.Now I am trying to take care of my health.Appreciate me, ok.
I would like to know is my LDL very high?I need to take medication?Doctor asked me you want to take?I said yes,but I never started my medication. Now decided to take omega-3.Is it omega-3 is enough or I need to take medication as well.
Thank you in advance. -
Jennifer:
Just wondering. If either parent has thalassemia, wouldn't the hospital test the baby at birth oso? I've seen it being indicated in the health booklets of some kids.
