      nightlone:

sg instructor more strict... in the states, the instructor said if he doesn't know how to do, tell him the answer, don't make him sit there. it'll discourage him.
but here, the instructor won't tell, they tell him to try himself first. then i went to ask the instructor, dunno means dunno, i feel that u should not make him sit there to 'try' 🤷
maybe it's their method here lor... but i told my son to go and ask if he doesn't know.
i feel that his progression is good. he is doing 3 digit subtraction now. i know that maybe his progress may be behind the others because of the lesser pages but it keeps him interested and doesn't overwhelm him. :
      Instructor ... Pros and con

If a child doesn't know how to do Maths and the instructor right away spoon feed child with the answer, child can become lazy, always rely on instructor for answer; never process thinking in his head first.

But if instructor don't give answer immediately ask child to try out on his own first, it forced the child to process and think independently first. In the long run, this may be better bec the child has to think first.

umm... i beg to disagree... of course... i don't easily give him the answer. coz i sit with him so i know when he is being lazy, when he really doesn't know etc. this kumon thing... u need to get involved. it doesn't work as well without a parent's guidance. need a lot of patience.
the idea behind it is encouragement and confidence.

Kumon Math is suitable for children who likes to sit down do worksheets. It doesn’t encourage creativity in Math. One of my friends who used to be a Kumon instructor shared with me. It bored some children and Kumon Math is not suitable for all children. It’s more suitable for those children who like to do worksheets one after another.

Yes have to agree it is kinda boring and drilling, i thk hardly any kids like it (my kids complaint most of the time while doing Kumon). But i do see \"results\"... my DS2 ('07) has much better concentration (he is q hyper) and his handwriting improved alot whereas my DS1 could do his mental sums q well when he was in P1/2.

My friend who used to be the Kumon instructor told me the materials are good. There are primary students doing secondary level Math. Kumon can benefit children who can do work independently. Is Kumon fee still $120 per subject per month?

                Nightlone and ilovechubby,

Now how often Do your k2 kids attend Kumon Maths?
Is it once or twice per week? Each session is it still half an hour, and collect another set of fresh worksheets to do ?

Ilovechubby, which kumon branch yr son go ? Tia Payoh branch ?
Is the Maths teacher there good ?

How about you, nightlone ? Which Kumon branch yr boy go ?
Is the teacher patient ? I dun like those that show impatience.

Is there any Math class that is creative and not much drilling?

Is drilling the best way for Maths? Especially all the +,-,x?

Home teach. You apply your own creativity . .You can use manipulatives to teach.

Eg. Use a clock to teach about time, coins n dollars to teach about money , little cute cloth pegs , sweets , toys to teach about + _<> x etc. , use cube to build to teach about geometry . Games to let them play to practise . Exam paper - to do to assess the level of understanding of the child n identify the areas to focus on .
So far , my p2 girl is doing fine in math . I didn’t send her for any enrichment class at all . She is now doing the math Olympiad where her school engaged external party to teach after school.

he goes to the anchorpoint branch. it’s twice a week. each session is however long the child takes and yes, they will collect the next set of worksheets til the next time they go in. the instructor is quite young but she is patient and soft. i’m ok with her because anyway either me or my dh will sit with him when he does his work.

Nope, no creativity at all. But i didn’t expect it to be. my goal was just to start him off somewhere because although i knew my math, i didn’t know where to start and have absolutely no patience for teaching. we were out of the country for a couple of years and i just wanted him to get used to the idea of sitting down and concentrating for that 15, 20 min.
I tried the M&Ms for + - but he ended up eating a lot of candy! LOL… so did not work at all.
And really, that is it for the day. After that, it’s outdoor play the rest of the afternoon, weather permitting. Or to the mall. Or cartoons and toys. Whatever he liked, we would do it. That’s his reward.
So he gets the creativity from there. Not Kumon practise.
That’s why I cut down the number of pages when we came back, from 10 to 5 because 5 was what he was doing.

Hi nightlone, I am thinking of anchorpoint too and doing once per week instead of 2. But the centre manager discourages. What is your take?

My son is in full day cc and has other homeworks. Twice weekly can b taxing. The advantage of gg to the centre twice will facilitate instructor’s monitoring and doing other classroom activities. Is it true?

Which level is yr child at now?
