Just to share, my dd’s Chinese teacher told me that if the child fails her HCL in her PSLE, she will not have a chance to take HCL in her secondary school, but if a child did not take higher chinese but get good grades for her PSLE, she still will get a chance to offer higher Chinese in secondary school. Is this true?

As long as she get Top 10% of the PSLE cohort, she will entitle to take higher Chinese, or else she may need an entrance test for higher Chinese to qualify.

My boy did not take HCL in P5 & P6. He was in the top 10% of his PSLE cohort & he only gets A for CL. However, he is currently taking HCL in Sec 1.

If your child is within 11-30%, then she has to get at least merit for her HCL or A* for CL. She can continue to take HCL in Sec, if she is in the top 10%, regardless of her HCL result.

Thanks for your reply. I am still confused. Does it mean that even you fail higher Chinese but you are in the top 10% in the PSLE cohort, you can still take higher Chinese or you will have to take an entrance test?

If u are in a sec sch (IP) where HCL is mandatory….
whether u take or dont take HCL in PSLE or
whether u pass or fail HCL, u are STILL offered HCL in that sec sch….

                Under Moe eligibility for HMTL
                Pupils who are :
                - ranked among the top 10% of the PSLE OR
                - in the top 11% - 30% who meet the language criteria (i.e. an A* grade in the MTL OR at least a Merit in the HMTL)

will be offered HMTL ( HCL) at secondary schools.....

so Yes to the question, if u are Top 10% in the PSLE cohort, u will be offered HCL, no entrance test .....

When P6 pupils receive their PSLE results slips, eligibility for HMTL (HCL) will be printed clearly in the form....

If your child gets into an IP school, she is likely to be in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort. 250 & above is already in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort.

No such thing as entrance test. Solely base on PSLE results. My boy did not take any entrance test even though he did not take HCL.
