Higher Chinese in P5 - To opt or not
-
Thanks for your reply. I am still confused. Does it mean that even you fail higher Chinese but you are in the top 10% in the PSLE cohort, you can still take higher Chinese or you will have to take an entrance test?

Thanks mummy so kiasu, now I have a clearer picture. Sorry for the confusion, actually my earlier post was replied to thetrees123.

Just to share, my dd's Chinese teacher told me that if the child fails her HCL in her PSLE, she will not have a chance to take HCL in her secondary school, but if a child did not take higher chinese but get good grades for her PSLE, she still will get a chance to offer higher Chinese in secondary school. Is this true?

If u are in a sec sch (IP) where HCL is mandatory….I am still confused. Does it mean that even you fail higher Chinese but you are in the top 10% in the PSLE cohort, you can still take higher Chinese or you will have to take an entrance test?
whether u take or dont take HCL in PSLE or
whether u pass or fail HCL, u are STILL offered HCL in that sec sch….
Under Moe eligibility for HMTL
Pupils who are :
- ranked among the top 10% of the PSLE OR
- in the top 11% - 30% who meet the language criteria (i.e. an A* grade in the MTL OR at least a Merit in the HMTL)
will be offered HMTL ( HCL) at secondary schools.....
so Yes to the question, if u are Top 10% in the PSLE cohort, u will be offered HCL, no entrance test .....
When P6 pupils receive their PSLE results slips, eligibility for HMTL (HCL) will be printed clearly in the form.... -
Thanks Augmum, now my doubts are clear.

If your child gets into an IP school, she is likely to be in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort. 250 & above is already in the top 10% of the PSLE cohort.nmhmum:

No such thing as entrance test. Solely base on PSLE results. My boy did not take any entrance test even though he did not take HCL. -
mummy so kiasu:
Nan Hua conduct entrance test for sec 1 student to decide whether they able to take HCL or not.nmhmum:

Is not likely in the top 10%, it's Certainly in the top 10% since i mentioned sec schs where HCL is mandatory.....(via S1 postings)
i am juz trying to explain the different scenarios ....where pupils applied to diff schs.....
Even with the agg T-scores of 23X- 24X (successful via DSA sports/PA), these pupils are STILL offered HCL..... -
Need advice.
My boy ca2 got around 70 for both chinese and hcl.
I approached a tuition centreamd they adviced my to sign up for normal chinese class instead of higher chinese class as the focus for these two classes are different. Now I am confused. Higher chinese class in school don’t cover teaching for normal chinese paper? Will the kid cope with different syllabus should I sign him for normal chinese but let him retain hcl class in school?
