Nanyang Kindergarten
-
I am pulling my boy out from current school to attend nanyang kindergarten k2 next year. Can someone let me know beside good Chinese in nanyang, are they good in English and maths? Please help me…
-
I wonder if any parents send their children to the enrichment classes organised by Nanyang Kindergarten? My child is in Nursery next year and I’m thinking of “Sketch & Splash” and “Gymnastics”. Would appreciate if you could give me some feedback on these classes.
He currently attends the English speech and drama enrichment on Tuesday and I attended one of the sessions a few weeks ago and was not impressed by the way the class was conducted so I’m unlikely to continue with that. -

It was interesting to note that you have chosen to send you children back to Pat’s after trying out NYK.
My child is currently with pat’s (Serangoon) full day in Nursery and am almost about to withdraw him to switch him to Soka Kindergarten next year K1.
May I know if you have any advise for me based on your experience? Am feeling jittery over this decision… -

I guess you chose the Kindergarten because you heard good feedback. I have no experience with soka. But being a working mum, I see the value of the full day curriculum versus a 3 hour school. And the low student to teacher ratio of 8 and the (optional) music and swimming lessons at pats.AnneY:

Nyk was insanely popular so I didn't hesitate when my kid was offered a place when the schoool expanded. However perhaps in a very isolated case my son had very indifferent teachers, one of whom does not speak a word
of English. I observed the teachers were always chatting with each other
and do not pay attention to the kids. My son was not engaged. And there is
no English lessons until K1. My experience was that Pats had much better teacher selection. -
Hi peep…
Just went to register my 2012 born son at NYK on waiting list, but they don’t want to give us any figures. They say if by Jul 2014 nvr hear from them means no slot (for 2015 term).
We are not on priority 1-4 at all so the chance is very slim.
Anyone has good suggestion on any kindy around the area?
There’s a small montessori nearby but have not heard anything about it -_- hiaz -

I went to register my boy early this january too! They told me there was already 100 over parents who went before us, thus chances are quite slimHi peep...

I still placed mine on the waiting list, holding on to a last thread. Ahhh -
Hope you both can get into NYK!
My child is born in 2011, and if i remember correctly, the NYK will call us in June 2013 if our child is offered a place as we are also on waiting list.
WISH ALL OF US LUCK! *prays* -
Heard that we will know if we get in via wait list in June! fingers crossed

NYK and Chiltern House are very different schools. NYK is a kindergarten, school is 3 hours daily and they run AM and PM sessions. Chiltern House is a child care centre (?), a very popular one which I've heard many good things about. NYK feels quite \"traditional\", before school starts, they will sing the national anthem, say the pledge (in Mandarin I think) and sing the school song.
NYK's pre-nursery and nursery is 100% Chinese, bilingual program starts from K1. Chiltern House, I think, is bilingual from the start.
As for AM and PM session, it depends on your child's preferred routine. For NYK, it is possible to change from PM to AM (and vice-versa) but you have to wait for a vacancy to come up. The advantage of the PM session is that the optional enrichment classes start at 3.15pm. So PM session kids can move on to enrichment immediately after school ends at 3pm.
NYK follows the MOE terms and holidays. So expect 1 week holiday in March and September, 4 weeks in June and about 6 weeks in Nov/Dec. To keep your child occupied, you have to find holiday programs during those breaks. NYK typically organize a holiday program during the 1st week of June and year-end holiday, which lasts 3-5 days, at an extra cost. Since Chiltern House is a child-care centre, you don't have to organize additional programs during school holidays.
When I registered my first born, he was wait-listed #167. We have no \"connections\" nor priority placement, simply joining the queue. We were offered a PM place in term 4. He was at Pat's Schoolhouse for 9 months before joining NYK. It is a quite a large kindy so vacancies do come up, just be patient. -
I was on waitlist 100+ for nyk so i thought the chance of getting in is almost 0… so when chiltern house offered me a place, i took it up immediately…
The issue with nyk is i am offered PM session… smack right into her lunch and nap time… will have to make a lot of changes to her daily routine… i don’t want her to end up not paying attention in class because she is tired and sleepy… and so far the treads i read about nyk dont sound so positive but i have not went to check out the school personally… KiasuNewbie, so you switched your son out from Pats to nyk?
Chiltern house is also a kindy… 3.5 hours… Been to chiltern house twice and i like the overall environment… i like how the children are always engaged in some activities and the teachers seemed to be quite caring for the kids… not to mention they have a huge playground for outdoor activities which is a plus for me… brought my girl there the last time i visited and she seemed to be very comfortable with the environment (she is usually quite reserved and shy)…
Just wondering if it’s silly of me to give up a place in nyk… -
As far as I know, parents who send their kids to Chiltern House are eligible for MCYS’ working mother subsidies, therefore, I thought they are a child care centre, even though I understand they only offer half day programs.

Just done registration for pre-N 2014, but having a lot of doubts at the moment.
Boy is currently in full day at pat’s and is loving it. Admittedly, it’s more play then learning at their age but we don’t really mind it for now. What has been disappointing for us at pats is that the bilingual immersion which they talk so much about has not yield any results. Boy still refuses to speak mandarin and I have no clue how much he understands.
Key for us at Nyk is mandarin but there has been a lot of poor feedback on quality of staff and curriculum. Can anyone share recent experiences on this aspect? As a ftwm, the 3 hr school time is also a pain as I will need to find other things t entertain the boy. Any feedback on quality of enrichment classes and do they always start at 315pm?
Don’t want to be in a situation I need to send my kid to 2 schools to keep him entertained (tv and iPad surfing at home doesn’t count as entertainment!)
P/s:We were on phase 4 of the registration, and nyk admin suggested that they have not opened up to public wait list as priority lists have until this week to accept. -
Just found out NYK no longer offering enrichment classes for preN children from 2014. That’s when most childcare starts offering extra-curricular classes.
Another reason to stay at pat’s ;( -
When my son was in PN last year, there was only one enrichment for PN, English speech and drama. I sat in one of the sessions, I was not impressed by the course provider and did not continue after 1 term, so I think no loss there.

Hi Hi to the parents who queued in Jan 2012 for 2011 Babies! I think we were number 8 sleeping just below the staircase that night!
We just got a call this week for a space for the 2014 afternoon session also.
A little undecided now cause our boy also got a space at Living Sanctuary, which has quite raving reviews. Also the lady that we spoke to a few times over the phone this week seems always to be in a foul mood. Hope her attitude is not reflective of the environment in NYK now.....
Will be visiting the school early next week and see how it goes. -

Haha, that was EXACTLY my impression too. In fact, I immediately decided NYK isn't worth it, if that's the attitude they have. There are many (ok, maybe not that many but at least a few!) other options and I don't need to be that kiasu to put up with this! -
We just confirmed our son’s slot for prenursery PM session 2014. It was a pleasant surprise to receive this great news!
Anyone joining too? -

Hi! How was the visit? Have you decided on which school you gonna place your child? Perhaps we should have a network for 2014 intake: parents of NYK students haha
