don't worry. this is quite normal. The key is motivation and interest. If the interest is there, the child will naturally pursue the question till the answer is found. Give him a diagram on a gaming strategy (ie Plants vs Zombies) and I can assure you, the child will give his utmost attention to understanding the diagram. There won't be just looking at the diagram and saying \"don't know\"
Yalor. The other day I marked the geometry qn, so simple yet he put a big ? on the qn n some ore remarked Not enough info, cannot solve. I wrote down the way to solve n passed back to him. Ytd I double checked with him whether he has seen my remarks. He admitted he did not read the qn, just looked at the diagram but assured me he will read the qn during the exam. I asked him why he wants to make me worry like that? He no ans. I must hv owed him in our previous lives
Unfortunately, conventional methods of teaching does not help to develop interest or motivation in academic subjects. On top of this, the teacher's lack of patience, early labeling of children's abilities, pressure to perform all adds to a negative influence on a child's interest. -

:thankyou: for the encouragement n advice on Plants vs Zombies.

I have a feeling that my younger son is weak in spatial intelligence. Does playing the Plants vs Zombies help? -
Jennifer:

I thought your DS is doing fine with most subjects...no??? Curious..what would be his original target of 4/4? -
happyheart:
He targeted to finish 80 top school papers during the June holiday (he set the target himself. I have nothing to do with it. Please don't flame me.). He only finished 22 papers. Sigh... Now I must think carefully how to discuss this with him as it will affect his behaviour in the future. Should I tell him next time not to set such a high goal or should I be happy that at least he finished a quarter of his target or should I be angry with him?ngl2010:

Ehβ¦ I think 80 is too high a targetβ¦ Maybe because we didnβt focus on past papers so what DS has done is a fraction of what yours hasβ¦

we are no where near any of these 2 numbers. would that be some consolation to you?
80 means at least 2 papers a day including weekends. but, it's the holidays. we need to help them manage their expectations. if not, they get discouraged unnecessarily. -

i feel that setting high goals is important but it has to be realistic. my dd wanted to do ALL the papers but i made her work out a daily to do list and then she realised that it is just not possible cos i wanted her not just to complete but to get the feel of the time limit. hence each paper's full time is worked into the schedule, tutor's hw, school hw, plus gaigai time, free time, eat, bathe, toilet time too.
hence, as long as each day's work is fulfilled, then, for me is target met. -

DS is also no where near 22 or 80. I think to finish 22 papers is quite good already, I would be happy if DS can do so much!happyheart:

You should not scold or be angry with him, I feel. But perhaps talk to him about setting realistic goals so that both of you will not be disappointed.
