Why are more and more student care closing down?

Am looking for student care for my son for next year. Called up a few student care in sengkang and a few said they are ceasing operations for student care next year.

One of the student care said is due to more primary schools going to one session and they have activities/enrichment classes after school.

Is that true? Can current mummies advise?

If that’s the case, does it mean they can stay in school till we fetch them at 6pm?

Otherwise, where can the students go after school since everyday their finish timing is different and if I find a student care that requires to take a school bus then school bus won’t be able to send my son to the student care if he finish school at different timing at certain days of the week.

I really need advises from parents whose kids are now in Primary school and they are going to a non in-house student care.

Why? Cos rental very exp lor. Esp SK area.
And if they convert the space to CHILDCARE (in hot demand), they earn a lot more.

Imagine for CC, parent pays $300+, govt subsidy top up $300. Total centre collects $600+ for 1 child. Of course most centres charge more.
For Student Care, they charge $300+, parents complain expensive already. cos most in-school centres only charge $200+.

Pay for tutors who can help primary school kids with homework is more than the preschool teachers also. So end up, they don't earn from student care biz unless the centre is very big, got classrooms for additional tuition classes, etc. They can earn from tuition also.

And it is true a lot of them stay back till late.
I know of some who have CCA/remedial till 5pm daily. The parents just ask them to stay in school and do homework while waiting. They wait in library or canteen. Then parents pick up at 6.30pm. But this is for older kids (upper primary). The younger ones don't have much stay back so still need someone to care for them in the afternoon.

Hi, I have a question. I understand that Fairfield Methodist Pri has only 1 space to be balloted today with 10 child fighting for it. I also understand that one friend child's no was not rolled out during the balloting, so I'm curious why she told me her son managed to be enrolled but refused to tel me the reason. Anyone knows any possible reason?

Could it be that your friend is living within 1 km from the school? The balloting is only for those staying 1-2km away from school. All SC within 1km has seat secured, without need for balloting.

I heard that student care biz is a sunset industry coz more and more schools are going single session. That means they will be swatting flies in the mornings and essentially only open from lunch time to 7pm. This will also mean they can take in less students coz there is a limit to the number of pple at the premises at any one time (fire safety). And when the kid does CCAs, that can make them stay back almost 3 days a week. Which means it is not economical to pay for 5 days and attend only 2 days a week.

Childcare is the most profitable compared to Infant Care and Student Care.

But then again, there's demand for PREMIUM student cares (qualified tutors, extended hours, etc).

Maybe they should look into subsidies for student care too.

Hi, can't be cos hers is within 1-2km. I think best is mummies balloting for this sch this morning to call up and enquire properly.

Wow! How is that possible? I am not sure how the parents within 1-2 km today will be able to check with the school without a name though...

Also, did Fairfield announce earlier that there were exactly 10 people within 1-2 km who were balloting today? If so, then if your friend didnt need to ballot, then his/her child's name would not be inside?

However, it sounded that one of the loophole in the registration process is that the school/principal has the call to offer any vacant places after the registration to parents on the waitlist (based on earlier discussions on the priorities of the waitlist).

So perhaps the school already knew that they have the vacant place, and perhaps the parent is well \"connected\" to the \"right\" people, and was given the assurance on the place. But the parent had unfortunately bragged about the allocation.

All speculation, but could this be a possible explanation?

I think it’s unfair to speculate/judge how a school operates without finding the truth ?

Zolldoll, why don’t you call up the admin manager or the Vice principal to ask since you have the name (your friend) why despite staying 1-2km her kid can get in ?

Could it be that your friend just put her name under wait list but choose to brag about it first ?

I heard that no matter what connection you have with the school, you still need to go through the proper procedure. Schools would not want MOE to investigate them.

If this is the case, than something is very wrong in this balloting process for FMPS. However we cannot speculate this as there is no real proof. Blessedwife is right, perhaps zolldoll can call the school and check on this.
