This serious... our educational infrastructure is not coping with the surge in numbers. I hope MOE is ready with a well crafted response.
How does moe predict accurately the number of foreigner kids to be enrolled each year ?

Too late for MOE to do anything. Open up classes but not enough teachers to teach. The children will probably have to go to international schools.

Or they may have to go home. It's going to get ugly today.

This serious... our educational infrastructure is not coping with the surge in numbers. I hope MOE is ready with a well crafted response.[/quote]\"If the number of applications exceeds the number of places available at the end of 29 August 2013, balloting will be conducted on 30 August 2013 at 10am. Places will be balloted according to the following order of priority:

        1. Children who are Singapore Citizens
        2. Children who are Singapore Permanent Residents
        3. Children who are not Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents\"

Quite clearly, our educational infrastructure is more than capable to cope with no. 1 and no. 2. If an applicant belongs to no. 3, he/she has to be prepared to be left without a school in Singapore (other than international or private schools).

          Hi,

Anybody have any idea what will happen tomorrow as, according to the number of places VS applicants, there will be 767 children without a school? Is there a precedent for this? Will the MOE be forced to open up additional classes in some schools? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

          Thanks!

          You need another (767 / 30 ) = 25 classes, to accommodate them.
How to spread out 25 classes? Which schools expand class ?
Think tomorrow, can call up moe - ask where can these 767 kids go to ?
There may be more to enrol, because today only day 1.

But if all local schools are full house by end of phase 3, alternative is go international schools.

It is only an issue if the 767 children are SC or PR. If they are foreigners, just too bad. Unfortunately, you can't stop foreigners from registering and MOE doesn't guarantee every applicant, other than SC, a place in our local schools.

Indeed it is an art. I wouldnt have thought that the Minister was referring to only sc or sc/pr child when he mentioned that there are enough places for every child just last month. As a parent, my heart goes out to those who may be caught in a limbo. Some international schools have long waitlist and not all parents can afford one.

If the trend is sustained without viable alternative, it may ultimately affect singapore attractiveness in eyes of a foreign family with children. Maybe its the system's own way of finding a new equilibrium.

For SC, govt can at least est fr birth rate, & ensure tt own citizens hv a sch to go to. Foreigners who registered for pri sch here may not necessarily be working/staying here at all. During my pri sch days & studied in a sch in woodlands, I hv a lot of classmates coming fr JB to study everyday, many Chinese in msia prefers to send their children over to sg to study. There are also Indonesians who sent their children over to sg to study & have their kids stay in sg, but the parents are in Indonesia. Hence, it isn’t fair to also expect sg govt to ensure that there’s a place for non citizens.

It is not MOE's responsibility to provide enough spaces in public schools to cater to all foreign kids who are not PRs.

Only high end employment pass holders are permitted to bring in their families. These people should be able to afford to send their kids to international schools or otherwise take care of themselves.

I'm curious - how do u define 'high-end'? My parents neighbor from Philippines is merely an IT support staff but almost his whole family's here (wife, daughter, brother). Just minus the parents only. They rent the whole 5 room flat (4 bedrooms coz old type) and sublet out two of the rooms.

This year’s Pri 1 registration exercise can be better managed by MOE. This is how I feel. Thanks for bringing up the minister who assure that there will be a place for every child. Now, the truth is there are not enough places to cater to the needs of children born in 2007.

This is common. Perhaps HDB should set a rule that PRs are not allowed to sublet out rooms to earn profits.

I don’t think they are PRs
