It's very difficult to be able to apply to a school unless your child has a DP. Most likely if a child has a DP, at least one parent is working. I am from the US and in most states you do not have even have to prove you are a legal resident to enrol in school Basically every child who wants an education is guaranteed an education. Is is the same in the UK as well.

In most places, every child (regardless of nationality) who wants an education is guaranteed one.

Unfortunately, Singapore is not an example of one of those places.

The significant differences being the relative size of Singapore and the neighbouring countries' population, and the perceived strength of Singapore's education. If every student from Johor State in Malaysia or the Riau province in Indonesia (just quoting examples of 2 of the nearest foreign states/provinces) wants to study here, I am not sure how many schools have to be built to cope with the demand.

It's a risk - no placement in Government schools - that foreigners have to take (I am foreigner in another country too). They have a right to register but there isn't a guarantee that they will get it.

Dimsum - there are tons of countries who do not discriminate according to the nationality of the children registering for a place at a public school in their adopted country. Off the top of my head, Australia, USA, England and Canada - just to name a few…

I am not begrudging the Singapore Government for their system; it is what it is. What upsets me is that there seems to be a lot of misplaced hatred and wrong information about foreigners wanting to send their children to local schools. Well done I say to these foreigners who are teaching their children the values of harmonious racial intergration and the life lesson that we are alike and can live together. We all love our kids and just want the best for them. It is also great for the local children to have foreigners in their school - think of how they learn about other countries and cultures through their fellow students.
Todays balloting and over-subscription was insane and I feel for the parents who now have a horrible and tough decision to make regarding their kids. Imagine if you were in their shoes…

I’m sorry that you feel that way. SCs as well as PRs also face the balloting situation that you mention. The fact is a small country like SG has limited resources and its not possible to accommodate everyone just based on their wants. Our very limited infrastructure were already being taxed heavily by the uncontrolled influx of foreigners in the last few years. You are welcome to take your expertise and $$$ to another country who can accommodate to your desires.

I was suggesting in the other thread that MOE can temporarily consider reverting to double session (have some P1 classes in the afternoon). Teachers can be relief ones taken from the pool of A level graduates who will be searching for temp jobs after their A levels this November.

Building new schools is a possibility, but MOE may want to study and consider if these 700+ surplus is an annual recurring thing to justify the building of new schools?

I believed if the school has engaged more A level student, it will relieve the work load but if we look from another perspective view as a parent once children are in school. You will find it quite disruptive to children who are studying. Imagine one relief teacher came in the absence of teacher on sick leave, actually they will be rush through those lessons they missed. Moreover, these relief teacher might not be so committed.

I'm sorry, but until one has applied for and is granted permanent residence in Singapore, Singapore is not one's \"adopted country\".

I total agreed in the sense government need to ensure that the citizen and PR children are taken care of first. We understand that everyone want the best for their children. Yet, this is a situation that oversubscription might be the steep fight among foreigners who work here or do not work here. I believed that we also do not want to reach the stage that too much supply of school that cause the quality of education deteriorate.

Hmm, how do we decide which schools do we want to stretch the resources? Would the parents of those S’pore children in those schools like the temporary measures/arrangements made to accommodate the extra students? Would they feel shortchanged if they had to make do with less qualified teachers? Why my school, not your school syndrome… Penalized for choosing a less popular school?
