        Hmm, seems like a lot of NTU students are a little suicidal, any of you have children there? I thought SMU is much more competitive, from what I know, NTU is slightly more relaxed.

          My students told me there is a suicide club in NTU, I am not sure. Does anyone have a kid in NTU to confirm?

            Just came across this: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-09-02/the-preschool-depression-boom-1/?cmpid=p_yahoo

            It's really inconceivable that even six year olds have suicide tendency.

              This example is too far from home. I read an article on a preschooler attempted suicide here, cannot remember the details because too shocked for words.

              Even closer is someone I know at lower pri age but stressed by worries, so has constant suicide thoughts.

              Honestly I am no longer surprised nor shocked now because it is a result of wrong focus in life.

                Maybe we should find ways to help a child manage stress.

                Anyone has any sharing?

                My 7yo gets stressed very easily as I find him quite a perfectionist…

                  Thru my own reading from here and there… I noticed that most of the people who committed suicide seemed to have a lack of love… usually as a child. It could be the child was born at the time when the family had lots of problems… child was blamed… or there’s poverty and parents have no time for child… or those in their 40’s and 50’s now… during those days… lots of families are not that well off and parents have lots of children…

                  So what’s love… if you are a Christian, read 1 Cor 13… and read up on 5 languages of love. Find out what’s love to the specific child - which of the following they would feel most loved

                  * gifts eg buy them their favourity figurine… etc
                  * physical love
                  * quality time
                  * words of encouragement
                  * service eg cooking their favourite meal, tie their hair,

                  With all the competitiveness and the reality of the education system, some of us are so caught up in giving them the best tuition and want the very best for them… sometimes it is not the best for them.

                  About 3 weeks ago Wesley Phay committed suicide… it was in the Chinese papers. He was just back from Tasmania. 18 yrs old. Supposed to report for medical checkup for NS enlistment that day. He had his diary in his hands. Lots of gossips among his neighbours and friends. That’s not important - what’s more important is why… why would a former GEP kid… so brilliant say goodbye… he had some wonderful writings (stories) published… Then look at Michael Jackson… isn’t he lonely too? I am not an expert… but I think my kids need love… me too … love to have lots of love… and less of the expectations… of the world, society, parents, and from very importantly oneself. Be confident and secure in love… love oneself enough to say NO without fear of losing friends or being alone.

                  That’s my 1 cent worth.

                      Sometimes, it might not be the parents not taking care of the child…

                      At certain stage of their life, friends play a very important part of a child’s world.

                      So we must always pray hard that they meet good friends and meet mentors who will help.

                      Also, the computer games and TV shows nowadays have too much of a "bad" influence…

                        insider:

                        I am frustrated with the local educational system. I can’t wait to pack my kids off to overseas for their higher education once they are ready (I can’t stand ‘square’ people and the chance of them turning square permanently is high if continue to be educated here).

                        I do not have statistics to back this, but this are my sentiments as well. My impression of the local education system is it is too left brain oriented, too rigid and does not require kids to think out of the box and explore other avenues of approaching a problem.

                        Like to say thanks to insider for giving such an account to child psychology, regret that such good intent lack marketing, and I only get to read now.. already guilty for Child-Growth-Fixing for so many years... hope my DS is not that badly hurt under my \"strictness\", and he may ended up a square headed kids, but no choice, we need them to score within the pre-defined boundaries, or they will not get to \"Good Schools\" in the frog in the red dot system.

                        I will start rounding off now... may I express my thanks in a boundariless manner.
