chixchix, it is illegal to rent a condo to use its address for Primary One registration without any intention to actually stay there, so I hope that is not what you have in mind. The penalties are quite severe.

Some parents was sharing that when you heard your child name been called out, the feeling is even better than winning a lottery!!! Did you bring your kid along for the balloting? You should.

I've never won any lottery in my life, and I say I no longer need to anymore, because I won the most important lottery in my life when I was 6 years old.

I come from a not-so-well-off working class family, and my father and mother were both uneducated and clueless about schooling other than to send us to neighborhood schools in the MacPherson area. As a pre-school kid, I was lazy and unmotivated... failed all my exams in the PAP kindy and ended up last in class... not that I cared then.

Somehow, my mother got wind of an opportunity to send me to St. Andrew's Junior for P1. It was one of the top schools in the nation in the early 70s. So she packed me off one day and we made a trip down for the registration. Being a hot school, it was already the last stage of the registration exercise and they have to ballot because about 50 odd people were vying for only about 20 vacancies. The school hall was packed with people and the atmosphere heavy with anticipation. My mother's hand tightened around mine each time the name on the selected ticket was read, and loosened in disappointment when it wasn't mine. It went on and on for 19 times.

Mine was the last name to be called. I looked up and for the first time in my life, I saw tears streaming down my mother's face. It was at that moment that I finally realized how important this was to her and how much she loved me to go through all the trouble of getting through the system just to get me into that school. It was the turning point for me. I suddenly had a purpose in life, and that is to make the best use of this hard-won opportunity and to make my mother's effort all worthwhile. Throughout my life, whenever I have to do a major exam, project or presentation, I always recall this particular moment in my life and understand why I'm doing what I have to do. It was to make my mother proud of me.

this is like deja vu...In the late 70s, my dad wanted me in de la salle, for no particular reason except that he was from st pats. We were not very well off and we lived in a room in my uncle's 5-room flat. My mom, who was from tkgs, insisted on bringing me down to coleman street to register at ACPS. It developed into an almighty argument but of course she won, especially as my dad was probably too lazy to bring me down to either school to register.

Off we went to the old auditorium, which is still standing, to register. As expected, even though this was abt 30 years ago and even as there were 350+ places for primary 1, balloting had to be conducted. Of course, i was one of the last few to be selected.

Then, I wondered what the fuss was about. Had no idea about the importance of choosing the right school. Now, after 12 years of ACS 'indoctrination' (ACPS-ACS-ACJC), I am doing relatively well in my career, as a typical ACS boy should. :lol: I am really grateful for my mom's preserverance, as is my sister, who entered MGS through a now discontinued priority entry scheme for siblings entering methodist schools.

So now, i will continue and pass my mum's legacy down to my son, to ensure that he has that necessary head start in life.

oh yes…forgot to add the kiasu part…i’m about to pay $500 to join in the OBA, which i understand will get me into an earlier sub-phase of 2A…should have joined when I was 18, at $50.

I think most Primary school principals and vice principals are very approachable and only a phone call away. Just call and talk to them directly.

Just to confirm if I'm required to join the school's alumni since I'm a former school boy. Am I right to say:

1) If former school boy AND join alumni will fall under 2A1; while
2) Former school boy WITHOUT joining alunmi will go under 2A2?

If so, do I have to be really kiasu and pay $$$ just to go in one phase earlier. How assuring will it be if I opt not to join in securing a place in ACS? I could put the money to better use :lol: .

You are right. And we have not seen balloting at anything earlier than phase 2B for the past 3 years. Save your money to get something nice for your spouse and kids this Christmas.
