Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools
-
Dear all,
my son is gg Pri 1 next yr, and I’m considering ChongZheng, Yumin or Tampines Pri as they are pretty nearby. I’m impressed with CZ website and activities but I heard that teaching standards is gg down, while Yumin is consistent with the teaching from P1-6. However, Yumin website doesn’t show much CCA & their last PSLE placing for Express stream is only 57.1%
The parent support threads are not active too. Wondered if anyone can help me out. Many thanks!! -

Enrol her into phase 2a2 school first.
On last day of phase 2c -
Check your chance of getting into the school at sengkang, without balloting.
If high chance of entry without balloting, then withdraw from phase2a, re-register under 2c.
If low or poor chance of entry under 2c, wiser to stick back to 2a2 school.
In the event you choose to ballot in 2c & if dont get in, yr child has to go next to phase 2c supplementary school. -
Like to seek advice from parents here as I shall be registering my DS for P1 this year. I will be shifting to Fernvale mid of this year and feel confused with choosing of the Pri sch as follows:
1. Nan Chiau Pri (within 1-2 km) Definitely need balloting
2. Sengkang Green Pri (Within 1km)
3. Pei Hwa Presbyterian Pri (I’m an ex-student so high chance but distance between home and sch too far.)
Which 1 should I try for my first option. TIA! -

I watched the show today and I do not agree that all primary schools in Singapore are the same. Different schools have different principals/vice-principals’ leadership, different calibre of teachers, different facilities and niches. The curriculum may be the same but how the teachers carry out the curriculum is another thing. Distance plays a big factor if you are thinking of sending your child to a better school that is 1 hour bus journey away or a neighbourhood school that is ten minutes away. The time spent on the longer distance in transportation could have been used for revision or recreation.
Any comments from parents if you will change your child’s school if you find the journey too long on bus and child has to wake up very early to go school. Will you change school to a nearer one instead or choose to remain in the better primary school though it is far away? Please add your comments to share with me. Thanks. -
Hi sembgal- personally i feel that distance is very important to me. I was in a dilema for choosing a school for my girl last year. School near my place but in phrase 2c or school further away (45 min journey) but higher chance to get in. After much thoughts, i took the risk of going phrase 2C hoping that i would get the school near my house (15-20 minutes walk). Luckily i was able to get it.
I only realised the benefits now. As the school is nearby, my gal is able to wake up a bit late and had a good breakfast before going to school. I am also able to bond with her as i bring her to school. If i walk, it would take estimate 15-20 minutes, but when i checked to have a school bus to take her to school, i was shocked to learn that it would arrive at my block at 6:15am. I was really shocked.
Since my gal needs to attend student care after school, she can be tired when i pick up her at night. We can have a few hours together and she wants to go to bed.
If her school is going to be far away, she have to wake up super early, miss her sleep and breakfast. I always beleive that children when deprived of sleep and food, the brain may not work properly and they can get tired if they are in the lower primary. Dun forget as they go upper pri, they need to take up CCA or supplementary classes.
I rather prefer to choose a school near my house so that my gal can focus better. I believe that teachers make a difference not the school. What gurantees that best school teachers are passionate?
As parents, we should pray that our kids should be blessed with good teachers/mentors. -
Distance is very important for me. I agree that not all schools are the same. No doubt all schools follow the MOE guidelines BUT to execute the productive learning journey for the kids very much depends on the school’ principal & teachers. Their passion for imparting knowledge, their passion in teaching. Their un-biasness to each & every kid.
