        Hi

recently my child’s sa1 papers juz came back. was surprised the marks were not given for eng compo and mother tongue compo. the teacher said its their exam policy not to review the compo marks.

where is the logic I wonder? then how do we know how good or bad is the overall band for eng and mother tongue?

is this exam policy common in other schools too?

It happened to my child's school before too. But after I spoke to the principal. she changed the policy and let the students look at the comp paper and marks will given too. So \"policy\" is depend on certain school perhaps.

Sigh!! I also have this super BIG issue with my daughter's school..
Both English and Chinese Exam Compo are NOT given back to parents to take a look..
Worse!! Marks also NOT revealed for Compo, Oral and listening test!!

Only paper 2 can be given back for 1 day, for parents to take a look!
then report book will show FINAL total marks..
So it's like a BIG BLACK box!! we don't know what went in and don't know what is inside!! Parents are left to imagine the marks for each component!
So how do we help kid to improve??
              I find this super ridiculous!!
I had been questioning the teachers since last year!!
Always same ridiculous answer which is not considered an answer in the 1st place: All other schools also don't give back! (Is this answer acceptable?!)
when I question and asked \"are u sure all schools?!\"
then teacher will say \"oh! maybe not all schools..but Most schools...anyway, our school never give back ALL these years!\"
Is this kind of answer acceptable??

              Then I asked, \" is this MOE's instructions?!\"
              Ans: \" not really...\" \"NOt sure..\"

Anyway, that prompted me to ask and check around..
NO...NOT ALL schools don't give back compo..
Some do give back!! so not giving back exam compo is NOT MOE's instruction!

I am concerned NOT because I am kiasu..
It's because my girl is very weak in her English, especially..
              paper 2 already only 35/50..
with compo, oral and listening test added, will probably be pulled down by compo or even oral also!
And I am even more concerned because of the change in syllabus.
              Sigh..

And from 1 parent, I was told that 1 group of parents already brought up the issue to principal FACE to FACE, last Nov..
But somehow, still no change this year.. :stompfeet:
              sigh!!!
I don't understand what's so difficult for an educator to see the need for parents to see the exam compo!?
              :? 🤷

apparently, I talked to my fren who is a teacher. she said it depends on the sch. the sch assuming, is saving itself from "trouble", do not wan parents to ask teacher for more marks coz their personal tutor gave their own kid a higher mark , for other components, the ans is either right or wrong. but for compo, not so straight forward in the marking scheme.

but still, I am also not happy with this. my child’s compo is worse than paper 2, so the more I want to see which components in the comp is weaker/has the lower marks.

I think if you ask to see the compos privately, and assure the principal that you will not query the marks or ask for any changes, she may be willing to let you look at them. The problem is that because compo marking is more subjective, and many parents will want to query the marking, some schools have decided that it’s better not to release the marks. Otherwise, they might not be able to finalise the marks and issue report books for weeks!

Hi, I email to the principal , cc to MOE. I just said that we, parents did not need to see the comp paper, but at least show the students the paper in school, what mistakes they made. We need the breakdown of the marks because we need to know the weakness of our kids, so we can improve in the next term . Like if their comp are weak, we can send them for creative writing, if oral is bad, we can train more at home. All these are for the good for the students, not parents.
I think mainly still depends on individual school.

                      Thks

                        Hi Shurley,

                        thanks for your important info…
I guess it’s your CC to MOE that made the Principal think twice/thrice, and then decided to give back the exam compo…
In our case, writing in to Principal, followed by a few parents Seeing her face to face,
to feedback a few issues, including this compo not given back issue,
did not "wake" an educator who is a leader of a big group of educators up!!?
1 reason was mentioned by some parents,
trying to avoid "problems" of parent going back to teachers to argue about the marking of compositions, and asking for extra marks…
(this by the slip of tongue of a teacher whom I questioned, she admitted this!!)
But how many percent of parents will do this??(though I know such parents do exist!!)
                        1%??5%??
so to avoid handling this minority group of parents, u sacrifice the rest of the majority of the kids, 99% of them??
I am super pissed with this type of attitude…somemore from educators who cannot see the importance of letting us see how capable/which are the areas of weaknesses of our kids’ composition, under EXAM stress and conditions??!
& to improve in composition cannot be done overnight!!
Is it SO HARD to see this point??!
(Current form teacher, said we can gauge my kid’s compo standard from normal compo done in class/as homework…But I do not agree, as exam compo done in exam has to be done under stress and within time constraints!! I think this teacher has already forgotten the feelings of sitting through an exam??! sigh!! & best joke, when she was on 1 month MC, I passed my girl’s normal compo done in class to tuition centre’s teacher to analyse her weaknesses, my girl got scolded in class for passing them to tuition teacher!! contradicting hor??? sigh!!)
