Could someone please kindly explain what is APP and TUR, using Henry Park as an example?

Hi angell, below is the explanation for above table for Henry Park.


Henry Park
Available place: 300

Phase 1
No of places taken = 300 x 54% = 162

Phase 2A
Available Place = 300 - 162 = 138
No of Application for this phase = 138 X 91% = 125
No of places taken = 125
Total no of places taken up to phase 2A = 162 + 125= 287 (96% of 300)
Left over place after phase 1 and phase 2A = 300 - 287 = 13

Phase 2B
Available Place = 13 / 2 = 6
No of Application for this phase = 6 x 129% = 8 (balloting required)
No of places taken = 6
Total no of places taken up to phase 2B = 287 + 6 = 293 (97% of 300)

Phase 2C
Available Place = 300 - 293 = 7
No of Application for this phase = 7 x 313% = 22 (balloting required)
No of places taken = 7
Total no of places taken up to phase 2C = 300 (100%)

Hi, phase 2c this year is from 30 july to 1 aug 2014, results of phase 2c is on 6th aug 2014. If there is a need for balloting, which day will the balloting in school(s) take place? Likely morning or afternoon?

Yes, it depends on the schools when they want balloting to be held. Parents should try not to go into balloting stage as it is very demoralizing and a nerve-wrecking experience.

As my child is in P1 now, I have been through that phrase of p1 registration when you can't eat and sleep well, hoping for less competitors to compete with your child for the vacancies. Parents have to learn to change strategies if the schools that they are eyeing are very hot schools, eg: balloting within 1km, well-known schools. I can share from experience that I have friends whose children were in the balloting stage at Phase 2C last year in Rosyth. Some children are very academically-challenged and they will thrive well in the school environment. There was another group whose children were not academically-challenged, yet the parents insisted that their children must go to Roysth because it is within 1km. End of the day, even if the child can get into the school successfully through balloting, the child who is less academically-challenged would have to compete with the academically-challenged and have a lot of catching up to do eg: private tuition.

Therefore when parents choose a primary school for their children, it is best to go for within 1km schools to stand a better chance to be balloted into the schools. Well, why I didn't go for popular schools within 1km from my house then for last year P1 registration was because I do not want to go through balloting at all. I rather choose a school that I hear a lot of positive feedbacks and a school that truly cares for the students in terms of holistic development. A school that does not stress on the academic achievement, yet can produce students with good results, focus developing students on academic and non-academic areas, has strong and active parent support group, is truly a good school.

I do not believe that every school is a good school as there are different calibre of pupils, teachers and principals. Some schools are just better schools.
