Please help me on the following maths question:

A fruit seller had a total of 204 red and green apples in the ratio of 9:8. After selling an equal number of each type of apples, the number of red and green apples left was in the ratio of 9:5. How many apples did he sell altogether?

This may seem like the wrong question to post here but looking at the math guru here, I just wanna know anyone know of any particular Heuristic approach to Maths program available or tutor teaching such math that I can enrol my P1 child in? Apparently I m so bad with Math that I think I better get my child some help! Bad maths runs in the family.

This is a popular question for PSLE. There are many types if before-after questions. For this question you must know that the DIFFERENCE is same because \"AN EQUAL number of each type of apples were sold\"

I am using the Model method to solve this question (However, I do not know how to upload the image

Solution
Before:
Red: 9u
Green: 8u
Total: 17u
17u=204
1u= 12 (This is the difference)

After
Red: 9u
Green=5u
Difference: 9u-5u=4u

Since difference same 4u=12
1u=12/4 = 3

Green apples before: 8u x 12 = 96
Green apples after: 5u x 3 = 15

96-15=81
81 x 2 =162

This is a typical \"Double-Ratios\" Maths question.

You may use the \"Bags and Boxes Method\" to solve all/most \"Double-Ratios\" PSLE Maths questions.

This method is found in the \"Raffles Maths Tricks - Vol 1\" book, available at Popular book stores.

Note:

The 2 ratios here are 1:1 (clue: an equal number of each type of apples) and 9.5.

The 2 numbers are 108 and 96 (when added will give 204 apples)

a)Such typical rate question require step-by-step analysis.

Ahmad + Ben
12 days --> 1 job
1 day --> 1/12 of job
3 days --> 3/12 of job

Ben
5 days --> (5-3)/12 of job = 2/12 of job
1 day --> 2/(12*5) = 2/60 of job
5*6 = 30 days --> 12/12 of job

Ahmad
1 day --> 1/12 - 2/60 = 3/60 of job
20 days --> 60/60 of job.

We start with the model drawing for Charlene and Betty. We let Betty's share be 1 unit. Charlene's share is 1 unit + 56. Since betty paid 1/5 of the total share of Allyson and Charlene, Allyson and Charlene paid 5 units.
Therefore Allyson's share is 4 units-56
now we use the first sentence, 4 units-56 = 1/4 (2 units + 56)
16 units - 224 = 2 units + 56
14 units = 280
1 unit = 20
Cost of watch = 20 * 6 = 120
