My husband and I cannot take the excitement of balloting, so we registered at St Gabriel's as a >2km. It's a wonderful feeling to have a confirmed place!

So if you can take risks well, by all means go to popular schools and give it a try. If you cannot take the heat just like us, maybe it's better to look elsewhere.

Totally agreed. A confirmed place feeling is a peace of mind and not get into a stressful situation, which we should prevent ourself from getting into.

My son's primary school journey started with a positive outcome, I believe his next 6 years will be a fruitful and fun journey.

Plus I don't need to force myself into a 2CS school of limited choices.

I chose MCS instead and very happy with confirmed seat

There are 91 schools that are oversubscribed and 95 that are undersubscribed. MOE should focus its attention and resources on the 95 undersubscribed schools. Make efforts to understand why they are so and find solutions to alleviate these schools. Are these schools under performing, have reputation issues or do they have other weaknesses? Maybe changes can help improve these schools? Maybe our educators and the policy makers can take a serious look at opportunities at these schools and help them improve. With improvements in place, hopefully these schools will get better and with time will become more popular.

DD's school was fully subscribed at P2C in her year. It was oversubscribed at P2C last year. This year, it appears to be undersubscribed by quite a bit. Go figure. Sometimes, all it takes is for the newspapers to run a piece on a nearby school and they all flock there. :faint:

Either that or dd's reputation - bad influence and all, chased them away...

But seriously, I think that one good way would be for the undersubscribed schools to keep to the same number of classes originally planned for, but with smaller class sizes (instead of having some classes scrapped as appears to be the current practice). So, if a school was originally planned to have 240 places (ie. 8 classes of 30 at P1), but has a total final enrollment of 160, that school should still run 8 classes, instead of having the number of classes reduced to 5 or 6. Each class size will thus be 20 instead of the usual 30. And when class sizes become 40 in P3 at other schools, class sizes in that school only becomes 26-27. The unpopular schools are going to become popular very quickly.

Why not transfer the Top 10 popular schools principal to those bottom 10 schools & spread the news..


I think more or less will boost the application at bottom schools. :rahrah:

That's what I thought too until last year. If one follows what happened last year, one will discover that P3 vacancies are actually fewer than what is left over from P2C supplementary. It's actually quite interesting what MOE does.

True. Cannot have the foreigners dominating the P1 cohort in schools that are very under-subscribed. Imbalance proportion.

Good suggestion but it also depends on the calibre of the students. If you transfer all the top school teachers to a neighbourhood schools that is undersubscribed, there is not much a teacher can do to a class of 30 pupils if most of her pupils come from background with not well-educated parents. Nowadays, men marry foreign brides and these brides turned into local Mothers do not know how to guide the children in the school work even though they are homemakers. The fathers will be busy working with hardly much time left to supervise the child's study. We need to look at the economic background and educational background of the parents too
