My DD has been rather weak in her comprehension portion.
Interpretation from the passage is rather poor. Is there any techniques or method to share? Most of her scores on average is 9/20. -
Jamesbond:
Thx simkhoo for your help.
Tom insisted that I should let him pay the rent that month.slmkhoo:
Hi,
\"You really must let me pay the rent this month\" Tom said.
Tom insisted .............................
Pl help.
Have a doubt...
Can it also be
Tom insisted that I must let him pay the rent that month.
(Colossal-size edit: earlier I misread the question, please disregard everything I said if you've read it.)
Yes, should is fine as slmkhoo suggested.
'Must' in this question refers to a suggestion that someone should do something, not that it is a necessary or important thing to do (which is how we normally use this modal verb).
If you put \"must\" in your answer, however, there will be an ambiguity and some teachers might assume the usual \"necessity\" meaning and mark you down. Using \"must\" as substitute for \"should\" normally occurs in dialogue.

Thomas is one of the boys who ______(know/knows) where the suspect has hidden the stolen wallet.
Thank you for yr reply. What about this:
He is one of those who ______(like,likes) an outdoor life.
(Book anewer is \"like\")
Why? Isn't it the same as the 1st qtn? :? -

answer: knowHi pls help! Thank you.
Thomas is one of the boys who ______(know/knows) where the suspect has hidden the stolen wallet.
The 2nd verb (know/knows) comes after 'who', and it agrees with the plural noun ( boys) before who -

Hi pls help! Thank you.
Thomas is one of the boys who ______(know/knows) where the suspect has hidden the stolen wallet.
The 2nd verb (know/knows) comes after 'who', and it agrees with the plural noun ( boys) before who
The trick is to look at the meaning of the sentence rather than just the form of the words. In these sentences, the rest of the sentence applies to the group - eg. all the boys know where the wallet was hidden, all like the outdoor life.
Contrast this with:
He is the only one of the boys who knows where the suspect has hidden the stolen wallet.
He is the only one of those (boys) who likes an outdoor life.
Apologies again!
