      Hi MMM and happybird,

The Go books look great. I am sure my son would love it but too costly to have it.

      Does library have it?
      Hi,

I am not too sure if library has it. Happened to chance upon a mum selling her preloved collections. I was looking for some graded books so decided to give it a try as it was around $1 per book.

Have you seen the pelangi series at popular? I managed to get some pre-loved ones at Thomson plaza as well at around $1. New ones going at $2.91 at popular.

          Hi Dafodil,

What a coincidence! Your kids are same age as mine. My kids -1st (Mar06)and 2nd (Jul08) .

I have no experience for that particular branches.

I had sent my son to Zoophonics at Siglap Centre. I personally don't find it very good.

For I Can Read, i can share with you my colleauges experiences. What i gather is
          1. My A colleague reads to her kids many books before bedtime daily. Not much homework for ICR. Her kids benefited and do well in school.
          2. My B colleague sent her daughter there without reading any books to her. Her child couldn't read well. Just simply attending enrichment classes.

Aside a good school, parents need to guide the children at home too in order to achieve your goal unless the child can learn without repetition/revision.

For my case, i sent my son to MMI since Jan10 to learn phonics. Had decided to teach him at home wihout attending phonics class. He will end his class there end of this month.

If you are interested to teach phonics at home, please go to popular bookstore to get My preschool world series (book 1-4) that cums with readers/activities/vcd. Is about $30 a set.

For one to one, you may try to call Mrs Thong at phone no. 91063531.

Sorry if it doesnt help much.
Hi charmaine, it does help! Thanks your valuable info πŸ˜„

Yeah! So coincidence! Both kids the same age :celebrate:

Phew! I am on the right track with colleague A...reading storybooks everyday without fail since infant..but he still doesn't know how to read yet. He's reading from memory (based on P&J 1a etc. series). I am also teaching him reading thru phonics. Like your son, i realised that some of his peers have started reading...

I am hoping that ICR will help to expedite his reading progress.

First noticed the book when my K1 brought back a book from LW class. I found it very suitable for her where I am trying to introduce common sight words to her and get her to become confident in reading. I actually look for the contents so I am getting a mixture of level 2 and 3 for my K1. I am happy that through 3 months of regular reading on weekends only, she is alot more confident when she see those common sight words. But I also realised that she likes to memorise the books too after she knows how to read. She looks forward to reading infront of the entire class.

Looking forward to the beginning of term 2 where she will be back home with us everyday. I am sure we can achieve alot more together

BTW, if you are looking for it and don't mind preloved, there is 2nd hand bookstore (open area) at Thomson plaza. They are selling preloved pelangi books at $1. Personally, I also like the pelangi series CL books. My kids' school also introduced some of these books to them. Not sure if we can get it at a cheaper rate in Msia Popular.

Yes. Will be withdrawing her from ICR by end of the term.

                    Hi Mommies,

I’m new here and this is my first post. I’ve enrolled my 4yo son to ICL (Clementi Branch) and will be attending their orientation for parents this weekend.

I’m lucky to be able to have got a placing for him as the administor mentioned that this is a new class…

                    Wonder how’s the teacher there?

I found this set of phonics book from Popular Bookstore called Fun with Phonics (book 1 is Consonants, book 2 is Vowels). It says for Ages 5 and up but I used them with my 4 year old daughter. It really works!

I started her with 1-2 sections a day (one section is one sound) with book 1, and within 2 weeks, she can start blending simple 3-letter words. Before no matter how hard I tried to teach her blending (she knew most letter sounds then), she just could not blend, even simple ones like a-t. Yes, she can remember simple 2-letter words like at, is, by sight but not by sounding out. And I feel that blending is a great step towards phonics and reading. I was so pleased with book 1 that I bought book 2. After 1 month, she actually can read some very simple books with a combination of sight words (e.g. the), and sounds. πŸ˜„

The books are not very expensive. It is about S$14.90 per book, and each book consists of a CD too. I didn't play the CD often but I think if you play it occasionally, it would definitely help with her pronunciation. I quite like the activities in each section because it heightens her phonic awareness and strengthen her skills. Of course, the \"catch\" is you have to work with her, she can't really do it on her own (well, maybe with the CD). You don't have to spend a lot of time, maybe 10-15 minutes for 1-2 sections, or maybe 3 depending on her attention and interest level.

You can just buy Book 1 to try it and see if it works for you and your child. Hope it helps!
