Ideally, those taking grade 1 ballet exam next year April should be in Primary 3 next year as they are physically ready. Though there are some who take grade 1 ballet exam in primary 2 next year April, they will be assessed together with the other girls who are older than them.

I was told some children are age ready for ballet exam but their physical body is not ready for the exam yet.
That is why the new RAD syllabus stipulates strictly to follow according to age requirement when taking the graded exam.

Pupils taking Grade 1 exam next April 2015 RAD exam : are born in 2007.
They will be P2 next year, not P3.

My dd whole class of girls ( born 2007) : taking Grade 1 RAD, next year.

There are girls who take Grade 1 ballet exam when they are P3 too 😄

          Hi micollh

My girl say no toes pain but ankle pain and calf very tired. I am not sure if her teacher has taught all the exam dance steps for Grade 1 already but every week I ask her to show me what she has learnt and I don’t seem to see much tippy toes leh.

And yes, her whole class of Grade 1 is born in 2007 (10 pupils), only one is born in 2006. But recently we got to know of a classmate in P2 this year (born 2006) taking grade 3 for next exam, so it all depends on how fast the girls can catch up and progress I think.

For those who is doing grade 1 next year.. did ur child complaint toes pain? im not sure if grade 1 starts to do a lot of tippy toes compare to earlier grades(pre primary & primary).. my gal said she dislikes ballet now as her toes pain..

Grade 1 are not required to do pointe (ie standing on the toes) yet, so there will not be toes pain. BUT Grade 1 is more stringent than pre-primary and primary levels... the girls are told they need to \"point\" their toes/ shoes more sharply and elegantly for most of the movements. Hence they must make a conscious effort to \"point\" their toes/ shoes (i.e. the foot must make an elegantly arc shape). Hence your DD may find it tired.

Once they get past this stage, they will \"automatically\" accustom to it and proceed to more challenging steps.

Accordingly to RAD requirements, students taking Grade 1 needs to be 7 years old by 1 January of the year they are taking the exams (i.e. they should be Primary 2 unless they are born on 1 January).

My DD is born in 2006 and yes, she is taking Grade 3 next year. She is the youngest in her class but that does not mean RAD is making exception for her. DD could not take her Grade 1 exams last year as she has not meet the minimum age requirements. But she went through all the necessary training (coaching for Grade 1 exam etc but did not take the exams) and took her Grade 2, during April this year. But every ballet teacher will assess the readiness and suitability of her students.

I thought RAD stick strictly to birth year. My gal started learning at 3 plus and due to my schedule she actually joined the 4 yo class. Only problem came last yr at 5 when the classmates who r one yr older could take d pri exam whereas my gal who is taking lessons with them could not and the musoc and co only let students start exam from pri level. This yr we change school and she has to retake her pri class again…if only i did not start her so early.

Yes, you are right! RAD stick closely to birth year, hence as my DD could not take her Grade 1 exam when she is in Primary 1. RAD age requirements is minimum 7 years old as at 1 January of the year you are taking Grade 1 to 5. So when she is Primary 2, she can take her Grade 2 as minimum age requirements (still 7) is fulfilled. Ballet is like piano, you do not need to take exams at every grades as long as the ballet teacher assess you are ready for the exam of the particular grade.

DD starts learning at 4 years old, took her pre-primary when she is in K1, and primary when she is in K2. The minimum age requirements is a new criteria imposed by RAD in 2013, hence affecting her being unable to take Grade 1 in Primary 1. Hope it clarifies.
