I read the newspaper report and was impressed that one of the Catholic High Boys managed to score 9A1 despite having an average PSLE score of 238 then.
And if he was able to enter Catholic High with 238, he has to be from the affiliated primary school. So choose a school with affiliation definitely helps in this case and of course, we cannot deny the effort of the boy and the school for his remarkable result.
Apparently the 12 boys make up 1/3 of the top scorers. So boys who don't do well in primary school can do as well, if not better than girls.

From info given in the MOE website, it shows that out of the 12 Chinese High students who scored 9A1, 7 took Chinese and 5 took Higher Chinese. Certainly good performance for a SAP school where most better students take Higher Chinese.
Out of the 35 top students named by MOE, 10 took Chinese - 7 from Chinese High. -

According to what was written on the papers, students have great flexibility in choosing the subjects they like to study. This selection is usually based on Sec 2 end of year examinations results (Streaming process) and I believe Catholic High School allows students to take their combination largely based on their interest instead of limiting their choices!jedamum

if u still want ur daughter to study in an elite school, she may choose ACSI IB Programme:) ACSI's IB results stand on the top of the world. more than 64% meet the the entry requiement scores of ivy of us and cam. and oxford. the cut-off point of ACSI last yr was 6 and may apeal also. girls are admitted from yr 5--means after O'LMy daughter got 2 A1s, 5 A2s, and 2 B3s for her results. Her nett L1R5 score (meaning minus off those incentive points are 6). She is unhappy with her results.
She spoke to me last night whether she should drop her Japanese at JC level coz she analysed her ‘failure’, that maybe she had spent too much ‘unnecessary’ time on her third language that had hindered her straights A1s dream for her L1R5. She talked to me about her friend just focusing on core 6 subjects and obtained 6 A1s and 1 C6 (her friend in another school and most were on msn last night sharing results and where to go, etc).
I found it difficult to ‘console’ her last night as all this while, I thought I have successfully imprinted in her that a more well rounded person is more important than otherwise but ‘reality’ hits and she is having a relook at her ‘study strategies’ (which I do not agree).
Being in an elite school, she is surrounded by mostly rich and top kids. Her results (good in my eyes), are just ‘bad’ compared to her friends and guess that dampen her self esteem a bit (being a 16 years old teenager, she is still struggling with her identity issues).
I think enough is enough for what elite school. I am hoping to talk her into going to a ‘normal’ JC to enjoy life (to feel good about herself that she is not that bad) instead of being so ‘A’ focused and loss the meaning of studying altogether…
I will still try to convince her to continue with her Japanese at JC level coz she likes the language and it’s a pity if she were to drop just becoz of the silly thought of chasing the A1s in other subjects. She said she will think about it (she has a very good Japanese tutor whom I think can mentor her effectively on this).
PS: For my son, who is not so academically inclined, I will coach him to focus on core 6 subjects and drop the one (meaning getting a pass can already) that he is totally not interested in. Kids with different academic abilities need different approaches…Must have a balance ‘study strategy’…) -
Catholic High shares the same principal for Primary and Secondary section. I believe it is the principal’s philosophy that work miracles as well as caring and responsible teachers. Catholic High not only achieve good grades in Sec. but also in Pri. Cheers… for Cat. High.
